Infantile hemangiomas (IH) are the most common in the head and neck region.1 They can occur anywhere in the skin, however, urethral hemangiomas are very rare. We describe a case report of a 3-year-old boy with extensive lesions of IH in the anterior urethra. Foreign bodies in the urethra and bladder are mostly due to self-insertion, iatrogenic insertion, migration from surrounding organs or through penetrating injuries. Self-insertion of a foreign body through the urethra is mostly related to sexual gratification, psychiatric conditions or to get relief from the intractable voiding symptoms. We present a case of a 17-year-old male who self-introduced an extremely long 120 cm electrical wire into his bladder for sexual gratification. The wire was removed by supra-pubic cystotomy to avoid urethral injuries.

In men, the penile urethra is a primary infection site for sexually transmitted pathogens. Research on the immunology of this mucosal site has been limited in part due to sampling challenges, but available evidence indicates that the urethra contains a rich contingent of immunological mediators that can mount vigorous innate and adaptive immune responses against infectious organisms. Further research is needed to define approaches to stimulate immunity at this mucosal site to prevent the transmission of HIV-1 and other sexually transmitted pathogens.

BACKGROUND: CDX1 and CDX2 are transcription factors involved in the development and maintenance of the intestinal epithelial cell. Expression of CDX2 has been reported in normal and metaplastic intestinal epithelium, and in those adenocarcinomas with that cellular origin. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the role of transrectal ultrasound in the diagnosis of diverticula of the female urethra.
METHODS/RESULTS: Transrectal ultrasound assessment was performed with a biplanar 5 MHz probe and translabial ultrasound was performed with a 7 MHz linear or 3.5 MHz sectorial transducer in 9 women suspected to have urethral diverticula. Cytogenetic analysis of short-term cultured cells from a urethral squamous cell carcinoma showed the tumor to have an abnormal, karyotypically complex near-diploid clone as well as its near-tetraploid duplicate. This is the first urethral carcinoma with chromosomal abnormalities to be reported. Chromosomes Y, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 20 were all involved in numerical and/or structural rearrangements. Of particular interest was the fact that no rearrangements of chromosomes 9 and 17, both almost ubiquitously involved in transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary tract, were seen.
