BACKGROUND: The aim was to investigate the differences in alcohol involvement in fatal injury events between females and males.
METHODS: Information was obtained from the Forensic Medicine Database and the Forensic Toxicology Database of the National Board of Forensic Medicine, and from the inpatient register of the National Board of Health and Welfare. Alcohol was regarded to be involved in the injury event: if there was any indication that the deceased was a 'known alcoholic'; if the underlying or contributing causes of death were alcohol-related; if the deceased had alcohol-related inpatie

The purpose of the treatment of mandibular fractures is to restore proper dental occlusion and stable temporomandibular joint movement, as well as the reduction of the displaced fracture. Consideration must be given to the selection of the most appropriate surgical and rehabilitation methods in such patients. Typical surgical methods for the treatment of mandibular fractures include the arch bar method or plating at the location of the fracture combined with fixing the mandible to the maxilla using the arch bar method. However arch bars and circumdental wires, which require teeth for fixation,

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of hypothermia on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI) in chronically ethanol-treated rats. BBB permeability was measured using Evans blue (EB) dye. Arterial blood pressure levels of animals in hypothermic groups decreased significantly. The EB dye extravasation into the brain significantly increased in hypothermia and at 6 and 24 h after TBI. In ethanol-treated rats that were subjected to TBI, hypothermia led to a significant decrease in EB dye content in the brain at 24 h but not at 6 h after

To better define what constitutes appropriate treatment for traumatic renal artery occlusion, we analyzed our experience along with 147 other case reports from the literature. We recently reported our 15-year experience with 12 patients (13 injuries) who presented to our trauma centers with renal artery occlusion secondary to blunt trauma. This experience prompted a review of the literature. From this review, we identified an additional 19 cases of bilateral and 128 cases of unilateral renal artery occlusion that met our inclusion criteria. Of the 20 patients with bilateral renal artery occlus

Reviews of statewide hospital separations' summaries and medical record data from a major teaching hospital, were conducted to describe the epidemiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in South Australia (SA), and to document the demographics of the population affected and the nature of their injuries. The groups most at risk were defined for targeting preventive programmes, and predictions were made regarding their ongoing service needs, for more appropriate provision of care. The results indicate that SA experiences a high incidence of TBI. At 322 per 100,000 head of population annually, it

We conducted a prospective study of the consequences of falls in 325 elderly community-dwelling persons, all of whom had fallen in the previous year. We contacted subjects every week for one year to ascertain falls and to determine the circumstances and consequences of falls. Only 6% of 539 falls resulted in a major injury (fracture, dislocation, or laceration requiring suture), but over half (55%) resulted in minor soft tissue injury. One in ten falls left the faller unable to get up for at least 5 minutes, and one in four falls caused subjects to limit their activities. The risk of injury pe

INTRODUCTION: A new healthcare standard (Standard 5: Comprehensive Care) has been introduced by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare. Standard 5 advocates for organisational leadership to develop and maintain systems and processes to deliver patient-centred comprehensive care plans that include appropriate screening to identify and mitigate risks associated with hospitalisation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of a comprehensive care and risk evaluation (Comprehensive Assessment and Risk Evaluation (CARE)) plan to reduce ho

BACKGROUND: Physical, cognitive and emotional sequelae in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been identified; some as late as two years post-injury. To aid in the specialist management of such patients, a multidisciplinary neurotrauma clinic was initiated at a tertiary centre. Aim: This study sought to describe the clinical features of patients who attended the clinic.
METHODS: Patient data was collected under several categories: basic demographics, mechanism and severity of injury, initial CT findings and management, hospital stay and discharge details, symptoms in clinic and a

Background Isolated sternal fractures (SFs) rarely show complications, but their influence in a thorax trauma of the seriously injured still remains unclear. Methods A retrospective analysis of the TraumaRegister DGU® was performed involving the years 2009 to 2013 (Injury Severity Score [ISS] ≥ 16, primary admission to a trauma center). Cohort formation: Unilateral and bilateral flail chest (FC) injuries with and without a concomitant SF, respectively. Results In total, 21,741 patients (25% female) met the inclusion criteria, with 3,492 (16.1%) showing SF. Unilateral FC patients were on averag

BACKGROUND: Compared to adults, children and adolescents are at greater risk for traumatic brain injury (TBI), with increased severity and prolonged recovery when compared to adults. It is a challenge to provide care for those children who are at risk for complications of TBI under health care resource constraints.
AIM: To investigate hospitalization among children with intracranial injuries in terms of incidence and factors related to length of stay (LOS) and medical cost.
METHODS: Data from the National Health Insurance Research Database from 2007-2009 were used. In total 8632 children age

We retrospectively evaluated mandibular fractures in patients who presented to a London teaching hospital between June 2005 and May 2010. A total of 1261 patients sustained 1994 mandibular fractures (mean 1.6, range 1-5). The incidence of mandibular fracture was higher in male patients (87%) than in females (13%) (male:female ratio 6.6:1), and the peak incidence was during the third decade for both genders. The most common site of fracture was the angle (30%), followed by the parasymphysis (27%), and condyle (27%). Overall, interpersonal violence was the most common cause (72%) followed by fal

BACKGROUND: In Canada, there are many formal public health programs under development that aim to prevent injuries in the early years (e.g. 0-6). There are paradoxically no population-based studies that have examined patterns of injury by developmental stage among these young children. This represents a gap in the Canadian biomedical literature. The current population-based analysis explores external causes and consequences of injuries experienced by young children who present to the emergency department for assessment and treatment. This provides objective evidence about prevention priorities

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2005eng
Perilunate injuries are severe disruptions of the wrist joint that produce variable patterns of injury to the carpal anatomy. Most surgeons advocate an open reduction followed by ligament repair or internal fixation. We tried to reduce and fix the carpal bones under arthroscopic control to minimize surgical trauma and to preserve blood supply. While viewing the articular surface with the arthroscope, the disrupted proximal carpal row was anatomically reduced using Kirschner wires as joysticks, and fixed percutaneously without any repair of the capsuloligamentous tears. Three patients with dors

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Evidence from urban trauma centers questions the efficacy of pediatric field endotracheal intubations (ETIs). It is recognized that in the rural environment, discovery, transport delays, and a paucity of pediatric expertise contribute to higher pediatric trauma mortality rates compared with urban environments. The purpose of our study was to determine the effectiveness of field ETI in rural pediatric trauma patients.
METHODS: ETI attempts (field, referring hospital, trauma center [TC]) in trauma patients less than 19 years old were included. Prehospital and TC charts, incl

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, gait disturbance, and postural instability. Patients with PD suffer frequent falls, yet little research has been done to identify risks specific to PD patients. The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with falls for PD patients through the collection of demographic, environmental, and medical information as well as fall diaries completed during a 3-month period. Patients with a diagnosis of idiopathic PD, with and without falls, were included in the study pr
