Alginate dressings for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and there are many options to choose from including alginate dressings. A clear and current overview of current evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding dressing use for the treatment of pressure ulcers. This review is part of a suite of Cochrane reviews investigating the use of dressings in the treatment of pressure ulcers. Each review will focus on a part

Calcium alginate dressing-related hypercalcemia.

To date, no adverse effects or contraindications have been observed in association with the use of calcium alginate dressing on an exuding wound. This is the first case in the literature in which it is suggested that using a large quantity of calcium alginate dressing could be harmful. The scenario leading to the complication and suggestions to prevent similar conditions in the future are described.

Preparation of Yellow Sodium Alginate Capable of Cross-Linking with Mg2+ to Form the Hydrogel of Magnesium Alginate Quickly and Easily.

The bright yellow sodium alginate (YSA) powders were successfully prepared by a solid-phase reaction. The mechanism of the reaction and the structure of products have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The terminal groups of the SA chains undergo ring-opening reactions under alkaline conditions, leading to the formation of an α-dicarbonyl group at the chain ends. Notably, for the first time, we discovered that YSA solution (M/G = 1:2) can rapidly and easily cross-link with Mg2+ to form magnesium alginate (MgA) hydr

Tuning Rheology and Printability of Gelatin Methacryloyl/Sodium Alginate Bioinks: The Role of Sodium Alginate Molar Mass and Sterilization.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/sodium alginate (SA) bioinks are widely explored for various biomedical applications due to their favorable biocompatibility and tunable properties. However, the molar mass (MM) of SA, a critical factor influencing bioink properties, has not yet been systematically investigated in these systems. In this work, we highlight the importance of SA MM as a key parameter that governs the rheological behavior of GelMA/SA bioinks, directly impacting their printability and the structural and mechanical characteristics of the resulting hydrogels. Three types of SA used are ch

Alginate-polylysine-alginate (APA) microencapsulated transgenic human amniotic epithelial cells ameliorate fibrosis in hypertrophic scars.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic scar (HS) is a severe skin fibrosis. Transplanting stem cells carrying anti-fibrotic cytokine genes, like interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), is a novel therapeutic strategy. Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are ideal seed cells and gene vectors. Microencapsulation creates a favorable environment for transplanted cells. This study investigates the effect of alginate-polylysine-alginate (APA)-microencapsulated hAECs modified with IFN-γ on HS fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: hAECs were isolated from human placentas and characterized. The full-length IFN-γ gene was cloned i

Effects of fucoidans and alginates from Sargassum graminifolium on allergic symptoms and intestinal microbiota in mice with OVA-induced food allergy.

Food allergy has been one of the main problems threatening people's health in recent years. However, there is still no way to completely cure it at present. Therefore, the development of food allergy related drugs is still necessary. Sargassum graminifolium (SG) is a kind of polysaccharide rich marine brown alga used in food and medicine. Sargassum graminifolium polysaccharides (SGP) is mainly composed of fucoidans and alginic acid. In our study, we compared the activity of fucoidans and alginates from SG against OVA-induced food allergy in a mouse model, observed the regulatory effects of fuc

Optimization of alginate purification using polyvinylidene difluoride membrane filtration: Effects on immunogenicity and biocompatibility of three-dimensional alginate scaffolds.

Sodium alginate is an effective biomaterial for tissue engineering applications. Non-purified alginate is contaminated with protein, lipopolysaccharide, DNA, and RNA, which could elicit adverse immunological reactions. We developed a purification protocol to generate biocompatible alginate based on (a) activated charcoal treatment, (b) use of hydrophobic membrane filtration (we used hydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride membranes to remove organic contaminants), (c) dialysis, and finally (d) ethanol precipitation. Using this approach, we could omit pre-treatment with chloroform and significant

Randomised clinical trial: the use of alginates during preinvestigation proton pump inhibitor wash-out and their impact on compliance and symptom burden.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Investigation of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is usually performed off proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This can exacerbate symptoms, potentially impacting investigation accuracy if patients circumvent the preinvestigation instructions. There are no standard recommendations on how to manage PPI withdrawal. We aimed to assess the impact of structured alginate use on symptom burden. METHODS: Participants were already established on ≥4 weeks of PPI therapy and being referred for manometry and 24-hour pH/impedance testing. Preinvestigation instructions involved stopping PPIs a

3D-Printing of Magnetoactive Gelatin-Alginate Scaffolds.

Background/Objectives: Magnetically responsive biomaterials have emerged as promising platforms for tissue engineering as they allow remote stimulation of cells and improved control over tissue regeneration. Although gelatin-alginate hydrogels incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles have been reported, the use of U-type hexaferrite particles, particularly Al3+-substituted compositions, remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to develop and characterize extrusion-based 3D-printed gelatin-alginate scaffolds containing U-type hexaferrite particles and to evaluate the influence of particle com

Recovery and reuse of alginate in an immobilized algae reactor.

The use of microalgae for nutrients removal from wastewater has attracted more attention in recent years. More specifically, immobilized systems where algae cells are entrapped in beads in a matrix of a polysaccharide such as alginate have shown a great potential for nutrients removal from wastewater to low levels with reduced retention times and hence smaller footprint. However, a significant operational cost in the up-scaling of alginate-immobilized algae reactors will be the gelling agent alginate. To reduce expenditure of this consumable a proof-of-concept is given for an alginate recyclin

Cholesterol-Lowering Effect of Calcium Alginate in Rats.

We examined whether calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) reduces blood cholesterol levels in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. First, we examined taurocholate adsorption in vitro by various types of sodium alginate (Na-Alg). High molecular-weight, guluronic acid-rich Na-Alg showed the greatest adsorption of taurocholate, and therefore the corresponding Ca-Alg was chosen for the in vivo study. Rats were fed a high-cholesterol diet or a Ca-Alg-containing diet for 2 weeks. Body weight and diet intake were measured, and the general condition of the animals was monitored during this period. After 14 d, the pl

Motility and fertility of alginate encapsulated boar spermatozoa.

Ejaculated boar spermatozoa are vulnerable to cold shock. Prolonged storage of boar spermatozoa at low temperatures reduces survival rate, resulting in a bottleneck for the extension of artificial insemination in pig husbandry. This study evaluated whether alginate microencapsulization processing can improve the longevity of boar spermatozoa stored at 5 degrees C and the fertility of microencapsulated spermatozoa in vivo. Sperm-rich fraction semen from three purebred boars were concentrated and microencapsulated using alginate at 16-18 degrees C, and then were stored at 5 degrees C. Following

Alginate-based microcapsules for immunoprotected islet transplantation.

Islet transplantation is a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, its broader clinical use is hampered by the shortage of human organ donors as well as the need for a permanent immunosuppressive drug therapy in order to avoid rejection. Microencapsulation shall help to overcome this problem by creating an immunoprotected transplantation site. Biocompatibility of the encapsulation material and the possible immuno-interaction of the grafted tissue and the host immune system need to be examined very carefully. In transplantation expe

Rheological studies of the interaction of mucins with alginate and polyacrylate.

The associative interaction of purified ovine and porcine submaxillary mucins (OSM and PSM) with sodium alginate was evaluated by comparing the rheological properties of mixtures against those of pure alginate and mucin in dilute, semi-dilute, and concentrated solutions. These systems were investigated as models for the interaction of mucin with the extracellular alginate produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In dilute solution, evidence for such interaction cannot be obtained because aggregate species exist both in the OSM-alginate mixtures as well as in pure OSM. However, in the semi-dilute re

Characterization of rifamycin oxidase immobilized on alginate gel.

Rifamycin oxidase of Curvularia lunata was immobilized on alginate gel. The pH and temperature optima of the immobilized enzyme preparation were 6.5 and 50 degrees C, respectively. Transformation reaction was carried out with the immobilized enzyme preparation. It took 8 h for the complete transformation of rifamycin B (10 g/L) to rifamycin S. The immobilized enzyme preparation was found to be mechanically weak even in the presence of CaCl2 in the reaction mixture. Reusability studies showed that the catalyst can not be repeatedly used very effectively.

Salt-induced swelling and deswelling of alginate gels.

Alginate is a negatively charged polymer that is often cross-linked in the presence of Ca2+ ions to form alginate gels. Their swelling is often induced by the addition of NaCl via what is believed to be the exchange of the calcium ions responsible for cross-linking and the added Na+ ions. Our experiments, however, indicate that the swelling of the gels with NaCl is followed by deswelling at higher concentrations, a fact that cannot be explained through cross-link degradation. Dialyzing these gels against large volumes of ultrapure water confirms the stability of the cross-links. Assuming that

Prevention of acetaminophen-induced liver injury by alginate.

INTRODUCTION: Acetaminophen (APAP) intoxication is a major cause of acute liver failure. Alginate, an anionic polysaccharide, was previously shown as a macroporous scaffold, to reduce liver inflammation and sustain hepatic synthetic function, when implanted on liver remnant after extended partial hepatectomy. In the recent study we wanted to examine in a model of APAP intoxication the potential of a specially formulated alginate solution to prevent APAP toxicity. METHODS: Three alginate solutions from low (30-50 kDa, VLVG), medium (100 kDa, LVG54) and high (150 kDa, LVG150) molecular weights
