The refraction of 50 patients with pterygium and their age- and sex-matched controls was carried out. Patients with pterygium had surgery by the bare sclera method. A post-operative refraction was carried out at 12 weeks. A refraction was also done in both eyes of patients with unilateral pterygium. PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of astigmatism in infancy and childhood in a Spanish population.
METHODS: A total of 478 children with astigmatism from Valencia Province, Spain were examined. The patients, ranging in age from 2-12 years, were classified into groups according to age. Astigmatism error and axis orientation were determined using noncyclopegic retinoscopy over each eye.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of non-keratometric ocular astigmatisms on visual and refractive outcomes after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for correction of myopic astigmatisms.
METHODS: Seventy one eyes of 36 subjects were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent PRK for treatment of myopia. Subjects were evaluated for refractive error, keratometry, and visual acuity before and six months after surgery. Pre- and post-op non-keratometric astigmatisms were calculated by vectorial analysis of the difference between the corneal plane refractive astigmatism and keratometric astigmatism.
