BACKGROUND: Surgical interventions are recommended for cases of advanced mitral regurgitation, however, limited facilities are available. The most prominent complication in such procedures is heparin-derived bleeding. An alternative anticoagulant to heparin, nafamostat mesilate (NM), can reduce the occurrence of complications associated with heparin such as bleeding or shock.

Crystals of enzyme IIB of the cellobiose-specific phosphotransferase system have been obtained from 15% polyethylene glycol 4000 using both streak-seeding and macroseeding techniques at 4 degrees. Crystals were grown with the hanging drop method of vapour diffusion. Addition of 2-propanol and benzamidine/HCl proved essential to obtain single crystals suitable for X-ray analysis. This report details the case of an atopic patient showing a photosensitivity caused by a hexamidine solution. Patch tests were negative but photopatch tests to hexamidine in water solution were positive, after irradiation by ultraviolet A (UVA); all control tests were negative. It is well-known that hexamidine can induce contact allergy but this case was the first reported in which UVA was implicated. This photoallergy can be explained by the structure of the hexamidine molecule, but the question is: why has there never been such a case reported before?

Quinols have been developed as a class of potential anti-cancer compounds. They are thought to act as double Michael acceptors, forming two covalent bonds to their target protein(s). Quinols have also been shown to have activity against the parasite Trypanosoma brucei, the causative organism of human African trypanosomiasis, but they demonstrated little selectivity over mammalian MRC5 cells in a counter-screen.
