We describe a case of benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) whose onset coincided with treatment of danazol for menorrhagia. No other causative factors were identified. Headache and visual symptoms occurring in patients treated with danazol therefore require careful assessment, so that visual failure from advanced BIH can be avoided by appropriate treatment.

Six of seven women treated for endometriosis with daily administrations of 800 mg of danazol over 4.7 to 9 months developed one or more mildly abnormal serum enzyme levels. A group of 55 women with endometriosis was studied before and during danazol therapy. An unexpectedly high proportion (36%) had a raised serum prolactin level before treatment which was reduced after 50 days of danazol (before treatment 783 +/- 333 mU/l; on danazol 243 +/- 113 mU/l, P less than 0.001). Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura is an autoimmune disorder, most common in young women. We treated 22 patients with this disorder (12 of whom were women) with danazol, an androgen with reduced virilizing capability, for two months or longer. 21 women with endometriosis were treated with Danazol, a derivative of 17-alpha-aethinyltestosteron in an open study over a period of 6 months. 20 women had previously undergone an operation because of the spread of endometriosis and its symptoms, in no case was it possible to remove the source of the endometriosis entirely. Benign breast disease, aside from fibroadenomas and intraductal papillomas, frequently responds favorably to hormonal therapy. The advent of hysteroscopic laser surgery has provided an alternative to hysterectomy in women with menorrhagia refractory to other forms of treatment. Sixteen unselected untreated patients with primary myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and various combinations of blood cytopenia were treated with danazol, an attenuated androgen reported to be of some value in these conditions. Fourteen patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) refractory to steroids and/or splenectomy were treated with danazol (200 mg 3 times a day) for 2 months. The following responses were achieved: excellent (platelet count greater than 100 X 10(9)/l) in 5 patients; good (greater than 50 X 10(9)/l, but less than 100 X 10(9)/l) in 2 patients, and poor in (no increase of platelet count) 7 patients. In three cases remission lasted more than 7 months. Danazol was well tolerated and in most patients better suited than steroids for long-term intake.

The management, investigation and treatment of 12 children with precocious puberty is described. Danazol, a synthetic derivative of ethisterone, has been used over a period of 3 1/2 years. Its clinical, endocrine and biochemical effects have been evaluated. Danazol ha a very useful clinical effect in controlling the development of secondary sexual features but does not modify the rapid linear growth and skeletal maturity seen in this condition.

Twenty patients, mostly with severe endometriosis and infertility, were treated with danazol 600 mg daily for six months. Clinical investigation and laboratory tests were done monthly. During treatment most clinical findings and symptoms of endometriosis disappeared within 2 to 3 months, but rectocervical induration and rectocervical pain decreased more slowly.
