The heart produces small magnetic signals, but detecting them without touching the body and without heavy shielding equipment remains a major challenge. In this study, we demonstrate a noninvasive method to measure these signals using compact quantum sensors made from diamond. These sensors operate at room temperature and can detect extremely weak magnetic fields produced by the heart, even outside highly shielded environments. By averaging signals over many heartbeats and using noise suppression techniques, we successfully recorded clear magnetocardiography traces. Although current measuremen

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is characterized by red cell failure, the presence of congenital anomalies, and cancer predisposition. In addition to being an inherited bone marrow failure syndrome, DBA is also categorized as a ribosomopathy as, in more than 50% of cases, the syndrome appears to result from haploinsufficiency of either a small or large subunit-associated ribosomal protein. Nonetheless, the exact mechanism by which haploinsufficiency results in erythroid failure, as well as the other clinical manifestations, remains uncertain. New knowledge regarding genetic and molecular mechani

Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome (five to seven cases per million live births) characterized by an aregenerative, usually macrocytic anemia with an absence or less than 5% of erythroid precursors (erythroblastopenia) in an otherwise normal bone marrow. The platelet and the white cell counts are usually normal but neutropenia, thrombopenia or thrombocytosis have been noted at diagnosis. In 40 to 50% of DBA patients, congenital abnormalities mostly in the cephalic area and in thumbs and upper limbs have been described. Recent analysis did show a phenotype/

Shwachman Diamond Syndrome (SDS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by pancreatic insufficiency, bone marrow dysfunction, and skeletal changes. Because of the heterogeneous clinical presentation and the limits of laboratory tests that assess pancreatic insufficiency, the diagnosis of SDS can be challenging. Pancreatic lipomatosis, a typical feature of this syndrome, is also difficult to assess by direct tissue sampling. In these circumstances, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a readily available, noninvasive tool to evaluate the pancreatic fat content. We report a case of a 1

We have analysed the haematological parameters in 21 patients with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) seen over a 25-year period at our institution. Neutropenia, although present in all patients, was intermittent in two-thirds, constant in the rest and was associated with impaired chemotaxis in all of those patients tested. Fetal haemoglobin (HbF) was elevated in 80% of the patients at some stage, and anaemia and thrombocytopenia was documented in 66% and 24% respectively. Bone marrow samples were taken in over half of the patients. Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) developed in seven (33%) patient

The Authors describe a case of Blackfan-Diamond anemia with ambiguous genitalia and other minor anomalies. They point out the elements of differential diagnosis with other precocious erythroblastopenic conditions and suppose a recessive inheritance of the disease because of family consanguinity in two generations.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the endocrine phenotype of patients with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS).
STUDY DESIGN: Clinically indicated endocrine screening data from 43 patients with SDS or SDS-like presentation were analyzed according to sex, age, and genetic testing. In addition to 25 patients with biallelic Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene mutations, we evaluated 18 patients with cytopenias who were receiving pancreatic enzyme replacement but were without SBDS mutation. We performed a retrospective review of growth records and clinically indicated endocrine evaluations.

INTRODUCTION: Early recognition and management of hemorrhage, damage control resuscitation, and blood product administration have optimized management of severe trauma. Recent data suggest hypocalcemia exacerbates the ensuing effects of coagulopathy in trauma.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review of available literature describes the physiology and role of calcium in trauma resuscitation. Authors did not perform a systematic review or meta-analysis.
DISCUSSION: Calcium is a divalent cation found in various physiologic forms, specifically the bound, inactive state and the unbound, physiologically

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is the second most common cause of congenital exocrine pancreatic insufficiency after cystic fibrosis. SDS is an autosomal recessive multisystemic disorder, with wide heterogenicity in its clinical characteristics. The central features of this syndrome are pancreatic exocrine and bone marrow dysfunction (mainly neutropenia). Other features are skeletal abnormalities, hepatomegaly, elevation of serum aminotransferase levels, short stature and frequent infections. We present two patients who were referred to us because of persistent hypertransaminasemia. In both

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) is an inherited condition with multisystemic abnormalities including pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, neutropenia, short stature, and skeletal abnormalities. In this report, we describe the case of a 14-year-old female with a history of neutropenia, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and pancreatic endocrine sufficiency, pancreatic lipomatosis (10), and the development of myeloid leukemia. Postmortem examination revealed a high probability of SDS. We also describe the clinical findings in the patient's six siblings, suggesting this as a familial form of SDS. Bec

Diamond-Blackfan anaemia (DBA) is a congenital disease characterized by defective erythroid progenitor maturation: 30% of patients have congenital malformations. The link between these malformations and defective erythropoiesis is unclear: a defect in a molecule acting both on embryo development and haemopoiesis has been proposed. Inheritance is autosomal dominant in most familial cases, but recessive families have also been reported. Many cases are sporadic. A DBA locus has been mapped on chromosome 19q13.2 (Gustavsson et al, 1997), but several families unlinked to this locus have also been r

A male full-term neonate was admitted at 30 minutes of life with pallor and 10 minutes of respiratory distress. Physical examination revealed pallor, increased intercanthal distance, low-set ears, a palpable cystic mass in the neck, hepatomegaly, a pedunculated, globular appendage attached to the right thumb, and an ectopic toenail on the right second toe. Laboratory testing showed severe anemia with hemoglobin of 44 g/L. Bone marrow examination demonstrated hypoplasia. Whole-exome sequencing identified a heterozygous pathogenic variant in the RPS19 gene, c.175T>C (p.Ser59Pro), establishing th
