Calcium supplementation relieves high-fat diet-induced liver steatosis by reducing energy metabolism and promoting lipolysis.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic disease affecting the health of many people worldwide. Previous studies have shown that dietary calcium supplementation may alleviate NAFLD, but the underlying mechanism is not clear. In this study investigating the effect of calcium on hepatic lipid metabolism, 8-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups (n = 6): (1) mice given a normal chow containing 0.5% calcium (CN0.5), (2) mice given a normal chow containing 1.2% calcium (CN1.2), (3) mice given a high-fat diet (HFD) containing 0.5% calcium (HFD0.5), and (4) mice fed a

The efficacy of immediate diet for reducing local adverse events of inhaled corticosteroid: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Local adverse events associated with inhaled corticosteroid use, including dysphonia, pharyngitis and oral candidiasis, can affect adherence for treatment. 'Mouth rinsing method' has been used for reducing local adverse events, but it cannot ensure complete prevention. The goal of this pilot study was to identify whether the 'immediate diet method' can reduce local adverse events in a limited number of patients. METHODS: The study was conducted in a total of 98 patients, who had been prescribed a medium-dose fluticasone propionate for the first time, from January to October in 201

Impacts of reduced-crude protein diets on key parameters in male broiler chickens offered maize-based diets.

A total of 294 male, off-sex Ross 308 chickens were offered 7 dietary treatments with crude protein (CP) contents of 210, 195, 180, and 165 g/kg. One of the four 165 g/kg diet was consistent with the higher protein diets and 3 were modified to investigate the effects of increased methionine levels, pre-pellet inclusion of whole maize, and whey protein concentrate in reduced-CP broiler diets. There were 7 replicate cages, 6 birds per cage, from 14 to 35 D post-hatch. The average feed conversion ratio (FCR) of birds offered 210, 195, 180 g/kg CP diets was 1.555 which was superior (P < 0.05) to t

A randomized trial of isonitrogenous enteral diets after severe trauma. An immune-enhancing diet reduces septic complications.

OBJECTIVE: The authors randomized patients to an enteral diet containing glutamine, arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and nucleotides or to an isonitrogenous, isocaloric diet to investigate the effect of septic outcome. A third group of patients, without enteral access but eligible by severity of injury, served as unfed controls and were studied prospectively to determine the risk of infection. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Laboratory and clinical studies suggest that diets containing specialty nutrients, such as arginine, glutamine, nucleotides, and omega-3 fatty acids, reduce septic complications.

Diet containing stearic acid increased food intake in mice by reducing serum leptin compared with oleic acid.

In today's society, obesity is becoming increasingly serious, and controlling food intake and maintaining weight balance have become increasingly important. Here, we found that a stearic acid diet can increase food intake without causing obesity in mice compared with an oleic acid diet. Stearic acid increases food intake in mice by reducing serum leptin and increasing NPY neuronal excitability through the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. The impaired anorexic effect of leptin is probably due to repressive cholesterol-oxysterol-LXR-α/SREBP-1c-mediated leptin expression in mouse iWAT. At the same time, we fo

Reducing growth rate of broiler chickens with a low energy diet does not improve cortical bone quality.

1. Reducing growth rate is often supposed to allow better skeletal development and improve bone quality. In order to test this assumption, flocks of broiler chickens fed on a diet containing 13.31 MJ ME/kg (H) were compared with flocks in which the growth rate was reduced by feeding birds with a low energy diet (L, 9.62 MJ ME/kg). 2. Bone growth was studied in 2 experiments in order to identify any changes in bone tissue of slow-growing chickens that might explain why they are less predisposed to varus-valgus deformities (3.1% vs 19.9%). 3. In experiment 1, the morphology, composition and hist

Reducing Luminal Extracellular Adenosine Triphosphate Levels Alleviates Food Allergy Induced by an Egg White Diet in Mice.

The development of food allergies is typically associated with extensive intestinal inflammation. As a key inflammatory signaling molecule, the precise roles of extracellular adenosine triphosphate in food allergies require further elucidation. Our previous research reported that continuous food allergen exposure led to increased accumulation of luminal extracellular adenosine triphosphate (eATP). In the present study, we demonstrate that the deficient expression of intestinal ENTPD1, an eATP ectoenzyme that can quickly hydrolyze ATP to AMP, likely contributes to the excessive accumulation of

Reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress does not improve steatohepatitis in mice fed a methionine- and choline-deficient diet.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The ER stress response is activated in the livers of mice fed a methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet, yet the role of ER stress in the pathogenesis of MCD diet-induced steatohepatitis is unknown. Using chemical chaperones on hepatic steatosis and markers of inflammation and fibrosis in mice fed a MCD diet, we aim to determine the effects of reducing ER stress. C57BL/6J mice were fed a MCD diet with or without the ER chemical chaperones 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA) and tauroursodeoxy

High cysteine diet reduces insulin resistance in SHR-CRP rats.

Increased plasma total cysteine (tCys) has been associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome in human and some animal studies but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the effects of high cysteine diet administered to SHR-CRP transgenic rats, a model of metabolic syndrome and inflammation. SHR-CRP rats were fed either standard (3.2 g cystine/kg diet) or high cysteine diet (HCD, enriched with additional 4 g L-cysteine/kg diet). After 4 weeks, urine, plasma and tissue samples were collected and parameters of metabolic syndrome, sulfur metabolites and h

Mediterranean diet reduces endothelial damage and improves the regenerative capacity of endothelium.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is a fundamental step in the atherosclerotic disease process. Activation or injury of the endothelium leads to a variety of inflammatory disorders, including the release of microparticles. Endothelial progenitor cells may contribute to the maintenance of the endothelium by replacing injured mature endothelial cells. OBJECTIVE: We studied the influence of dietary fat on the release of endothelial microparticles (EMPs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in elderly subjects. DESIGN: Twenty healthy, elderly subjects (10 men and 10 women) consumed 3 diets

A ketogenic diet reduces hepatic alcohol metabolism and alcohol consumption in rats.

Previous work showed that rats that were exposed to a high-fat, low-carbohydrate/protein ketogenic diet (KD) exhibited elevated blood alcohol levels following alcohol exposure compared with rats fed regular chow. Additionally, the administration of a KD prior to alcohol exposure (i.e., a history of KD) reduced alcohol consumption in alcohol-dependent rats that were no longer on the diet. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms by which a KD alters alcohol metabolism and tested whether ongoing KD exposure reduces alcohol consumption in rats. We hypothesized that chronic KD exposure

Trial of a Maternal Diet Rich in Eggs and Peanuts to Reduce Infant Allergy.

BACKGROUND: Immune responses leading to food allergy may develop early in life, potentially before the introduction of solid foods. Exposures to food allergens in utero and through breast milk have been proposed as a strategy to prevent food allergies in infants, but evidence from randomized trials is lacking. METHODS: In this multisite, randomized trial, pregnant women whose unborn child had at least two biologic family members with medically diagnosed allergic disease were eligible to participate. Participants were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to follow either a diet high in eggs and peanuts tha

Ketogenic Diet Reduces Alcohol Consumption and Improves Memory and Sociability in Mice.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use disorder is highly prevalent, with known associations to poor health and memory. Diet interventions are a useful tool that can help many, as they are relatively non-invasive and accessible. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that has been used for decades to reduce seizures in children with epilepsy. In the current study, the effects of 3 weeks of a ketogenic diet on alcohol use and anxiety, post-alcohol anxiety, sociability, and memory were assessed in C57BL/6J mice. METHOD: In Experiments 1 and 1a, mice were allowed to drink alcohol for 8 weeks us

Did diet compliance and remission reduce oxidative stress in celiac patients?

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the effect of remission status on thiol-disulfide homeostasis in celiac patients and thus to indirectly determine the effect of oxidative stress and inflammation caused by non-compliance with the diet. METHODS: Between February 2019 and December 2021, 117 patients diagnosed with celiac disease were included in this prospective randomized and controlled study. In addition to routine tests of celiac patients, thiol and disulfide measurements were made from the blood both at the beginning of the study and at the end of the first year. RESULTS: While 52 of the pati

Ketogenic diet reduces a neurobiological craving signature in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing evidence suggests that a ketogenic (high-fat, low-carbohydrate) diet intervention reduces alcohol withdrawal severity and alcohol craving in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) by shifting brain energetics from glucose to ketones. We hypothesized that the ketogenic diet would reduce a brain craving signature when individuals undergoing alcohol detoxification treatment were exposed to alcohol cues. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of functional magnetic resonance data of n=33 adults with an AUD were randomized to a ketogenic diet (n=19) or a st

Cystamine reduces vascular stiffness in Western diet-fed female mice.

Consumption of diets high in fat, sugar, and salt (Western diet, WD) is associated with accelerated arterial stiffening, a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Women with obesity are more prone to develop arterial stiffening leading to more frequent and severe CVD compared with men. As tissue transglutaminase (TG2) has been implicated in vascular stiffening, our goal herein was to determine the efficacy of cystamine, a nonspecific TG2 inhibitor, at reducing vascular stiffness in female mice chronically fed a WD. Three experimental groups of female mice were created.

[Lactose malabsorption and -intolerance - who will benefit from a lactose-reduced diet?].

During the last decade, lactose-free diets have become increasingly popular in the general population, either isolated or as a part of a cow's milk-free diet. However, health-related benefits from a lactose-free diet are only documented for individuals with clinical lactose intolerance due to decreased intestinal lactase activity and subsequent lactose malabsorption. In this paper we summarize the current knowledge of lactose intolerance regarding diagnostic procedures and treatment.
