Extreme and conventional cardiorespiratory events and epidemiologic risk factors for SIDS.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that there is a lack of correlation between extreme events and epidemiologic risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and if conventional events are normal, their numbers should increase once a circadian decrease in breathing rate is established. In addition, the number of events should decrease with maternal smoking. STUDY DESIGN: Three outcome variables were derived from the Collaborative Home Infant Monitoring Evaluation (CHIME) of 1082 infants: (1) at least 1 extreme event lasting > or = 30 seconds, (2) at least 1 conventional event lasting >

Adult bacterial meningitis in Southern Taiwan: epidemiologic trend and prognostic factors.

In two investigative phases over a 13.5-year study period (January 1986-June 1999), 202 adult patients with culture-proven bacterial meningitis were enrolled in this study. In order to determine the epidemiologic trend, prognostic factors and therapeutic results for this disease. Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus pneumoniae were the three most commonly revealed pathogens, accounting for about 48% of the episodes. Although there was a change in relative frequency for the pathogens, K. pneumoniae remained the most prevalent during the two periods st

An epidemiologic study of environmental and genetic factors in congenital hydrocephalus.

Risk factors were studied in 96 children with congenital hydrocephalus (CH) coming from 118,265 consecutive births of known outcome. Hydrocephalus with neural tube defects, intracranial tumors or secondary to brain atrophy were excluded. The prevalence of CH was 0.81 per thousand. Diagnosis was performed prenatally in 41 cases. Forty-three (44.8%) of the cases had hydrocephalus without other malformations (isolated hydrocephalus), 18 (18.7%) infants had recognized chromosomal or non-chromosomal syndromes and 35 children (36.4%) had multiple malformations. Each case was matched to a control. We

An epidemiologic case-control study of ovarian cancer and reproductive factors.

A population-based case-control study was conducted with 403 white, ovarian cancer patients, 20-79 years of age, who were diagnosed from October 1977 through February 1980 in 11 New York State counties. The study also included 806 controls who were matched to the cases by age, race, and county of residence. The contraceptive and reproductive patterns observed in this study suggest that infertility plays an important role in determining the relationship between reduced parity and gravidity and increased ovarian cancer risk. Ovarian cancer patients were less likely than controls to have ever use

Epidemiology and Host Factors.

In 2014, WHO reported approximately 9.6 million new cases of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, more than half of which are contributed by developing countries in Asia and Africa. Lack of modern diagnostic tools, underreporting of the new cases and underutilization of directly observed therapy (DOT) remain a concern in developing countries. Transient resurgence of TB during the HIV epidemic has subsided and the annual decline has resumed in developed countries including the USA. In 2014 though, the rate of decline has slowed down resulting in leveling of TB incidence in the USA. In developed coun

Adenomyosis: epidemiological factors.

Epidemiological studies of adenomyosis are difficult to interpret because the diagnostic criteria vary so widely that the disease may be easily over-diagnosed. This would severely hamper any attempt to define incidence and prevalence of the condition and the related risk factors, and would limit the possibility of clarifying to what extent adenomyosis contributes to clinical symptoms. There is a need for stringent and widely accepted diagnostic criteria in order to define not only the presence of adenomyosis but also depth of penetration and degree of spread of foci. Moreover, the evidence ava

Epidemiology and risk factors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: : This article presents current knowledge on stroke epidemiology. It covers recent data on the global burden of stroke, disparities, silent stroke, traditional and novel risk factors, and stroke triggers as well as the clinical implications of these findings. RECENT FINDINGS: : Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of chronic disability in the United States, and the burden of stroke worldwide is even greater. Large international and US case-control and prospective cohort studies have demonstrated disparities in stroke mortality and incidence. They

Epidemiology and risk factors.

HBC is common, accounting for approximately 9% of the total breast cancer burden. Given 142,000 cases of breast cancer expected to occur in 1989, this would represent 12,780 cases of HBC patients. Soberingly, each patient represents a family with a variable number of inordinately high risk patients. HBC's natural history is distinctive and enables the identification of at risk patients who can benefit from highly targeted surveillance/management strategies. High priority must be given to development of biomarkers that will one day be found to have acceptable sensitivity and specificity to geno

Asthma Inception: Epidemiologic Risk Factors and Natural History Across the Life Course.

Asthma is a descriptive label for an obstructive inflammatory disease in the lower airways manifesting with symptoms including breathlessness, cough, difficulty in breathing, and wheezing. From a clinician's point of view, asthma symptoms can commence at any age, although most patients with asthma-regardless of their age of onset-seem to have had some form of airway problems during childhood. Asthma inception and related pathophysiologic processes are therefore very likely to occur early in life, further evidenced by recent lung physiologic and mechanistic research. Herein, we present state-of

Nongenetic risk factors for holoprosencephaly: An updated review of the epidemiologic literature.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a major structural birth defect of the brain that occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 live births. Although some genetic causes of HPE are known, a substantial proportion of cases have an unknown etiology. Due to the low birth prevalence and rarity of exposure to many potential risk factors for HPE, few epidemiologic studies have had sufficient sample size to examine risk factors. A 2010 review of the literature identified several risk factors that had been consistently identified as occurring more frequently among cases of HPE, including maternal diabetes, twinning,

Epidemiologic factors and surgical outcomes in patients with nasal polyposis and asthma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To evaluate the role of epidemiologic factors in surgical outcomes for patients with nasal polyposis (NP) and asthma. METHODS: Data was prospectively collected on patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery over a 7-year period. Among patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with NP and asthma, surgical outcomes were analyzed according to gender and race. RESULTS: Patients with NP and asthma had significantly higher Lund-Kennedy and SNOT-20 scores--pre- and postoperatively--compared to CRS patients without NP or asthma. Both Caucasians and African-Americans in the CRS w…

Adult Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis in Southern Taiwan: epidemiologic trends and prognostic factors.

The clinical features of 22 adult patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, retrospectively collected over a 16-year period, were reviewed. Otopharyngeal infection, haematogenous spread and cranial neurosurgery continue to be the predominant routes of infection. Most patients acquired the infection in the community, and predisposing underlying conditions are common. The proportion of S. pneumoniae meningitis compared to all microorganisms causing meningitis in adults declined dramatically from 17% in the first 8 study years to 4% in the last 8 study years. However, all penicillin-resi

[Epidemiologic aspects of scrapie and BSE including an analysis of risk factors].

After a discussion of the different hypotheses about the causative agent of prion diseases, various aspects of the two most important animal prion diseases, i.e. BSE and scrapie are described. This thesis focuses on the search for a preclinical diagnosis. A major breakthrough was the discovery of a new technique for detecting the disease-associated protein in tonsillar biopsies from scrapie-infected sheep long before clinical signs appeared. Another essential part of the studies described in this thesis concerned a risk analysis for BSE in a country like the Netherlands. Major risk factors wer

[Representative epidemiologic study of influence factors on the periodontal loss of attachment].

The influence of age, inflammation intensity, tooth surface quality (caries, fillings), as well as mucogingival conditions on the loss of attachment was examined in 2000 probands. The loss of attachment was subdivided into periodontal pocket-formation and recessions. Determining cause is not the age but the inflammatory degree even if there is a significant increase of the attachment loss from age group to age group. The main part of the attachment loss increasing with advancing age is caused by recession development. Then, the individual dispersion is very high. Incorrect restorations, caries

[Epidemiologic survey of tongue lesions and analysis of the etiologic factors involved].

The prevalence of tongue lesions, and relationships with different systemic diseases, according to the international literature of epidemiologic studies were reviewed. The data were compared with a Hungarian investigation of 5034 individuals, between 1992 and 1995 in Budapest. Tongue lesions were found in 22.76% of the examined individuals. The ratio was similar in women (51%) and men (49%). Fissured tongue was found in 21.49%, geographic tongue in 2.21%, atrophic tongue in 0.12% and central papillar atrophy in 0.70%. These data agree in general with the epidemiological data found in the inter
