Fast food, other food choices and body mass index in teenagers in the United Kingdom (ALSPAC): a structural equation modelling approach.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between the consumption of fast food (FF) and body mass index (BMI) of teenagers in a large UK birth cohort. METHODS: A structural equation modelling (SEM) approach was chosen to allow direct statistical testing of a theoretical model. SEM is a combination of confirmatory factor and path analysis, which allows for the inclusion of latent (unmeasured) variables. This approach was used to build two models: the effect of FF outlet visits and food choices and the effect of FF exposure on consumption and BMI. RESULTS: A total of 3620 participants had data for

Fast-Food Component-Induced Epigenetic Modifications Modulate Immunotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer.

The impact of fast-food components on epigenetic modifications and their implications for immunotherapy in metastatic breast cancer remain inadequately explored. In this study, we investigated the effects of selected fast-food components monosodium glutamate (MSG), acrylamide (AA), sodium sorbate (SS), and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) on the expression of the epigenetic enzymes histone deacetylase 8 (HDAC8) and protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), and their role in suppressing immunotherapeutic responses in MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. Epigenetic modifications upre

Determination of phthalate concentrations in paper-based fast food packaging available on the U.S. market.

Phthalates are one of many chemical compounds that are used as plasticisers. Packaging can transfer plasticisers to the surfaces of foods or other materials. A recent study suggested a link between fast food consumption and increased urine phthalate metabolites even though phthalates are most commonly found in food contact materials made of PVC while fast food packaging is most commonly composed of paper and paper board. Phthalates in PVC are usually present in percent concentrations. In non-PVC food contact materials, such as paper or paperboard, the concentrations, if any, are expected to be

Association of Fast Food and Supermarket Density with Neonatal Outcomes of Pregnancies Affected by Gestational Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the association of fast food density (FFD) and supermarket density (SD) with adverse neonatal outcomes in pregnancies with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of women with GDM who delivered at a tertiary care center in a large metropolitan area (1/2010-2/2016). ZIP codes were used to link women with surrounding food environment. FFD and SD were calculated as the number of establishments per 100,000 residents for each ZIP code and classified into quartiles. Quartile 1 represented lowest FFD or SD. Four neonatal outcome

Food addiction linked to changes in ventral striatum functional connectivity between fasting and satiety.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of "food addiction" (FA) has gained popularity in view of clinical and neurobiological overlaps between excessive food intake and addictive disorders. However, no studies have examined the link between FA and striatocortical circuits involved in addictive disorders, or the influence of homeostatic status, which regulates the drive to eat, on these systems. This study aims to investigate changes in striatal functional connectivity between fasted and fed conditions among adults ranging in body mass index (BMI) and FA symptoms. METHODS: Thirty adults were recruited from

Influence of chronic food deprivation on structure-function relationship of juvenile rat fast muscles.

In the present study, we analyze the influence of chronic undernutrition on protein expression, muscle fiber type composition, and fatigue resistance of the fast extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle of male juvenile rats (45 ± 3 days of life; n = 25 and 31 rats for control and undernourished groups, respectively). Using 2D gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, we identified in undernourished muscles 12 proteins up-regulated (8 proteins of the electron transport chain and the glycolytic pathway, 2 cross-bridge proteins, chaperone and signaling proteins that are related to the stress resp

Fast-food and convenience outlets near schools in California: a comparison of private and public schools.

Food environment near schools (FENS) influence children's dietary habits and contribute to obesity. Socioeconomic characteristics of schools and school neighborhoods play a role in determining FENS. We compare the availability of fast-food restaurants (FFRs) and convenience stores (CSs) across schools' socioeconomic characteristics: whether the school is public or private and the school neighborhood's median household income. We obtained the number of FFRs and CSs within a 0.75-mile network buffer from schools' locations and the names of the outlets. Negative binomial regression models, strati

Effects of food, fasting, and exercise on plasma pyrophosphate levels and ENPP1 activity in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is highly regulated as it plays a critical role in the regulation of physiological mineralization. Dysregulation of plasma PPi is associated with skeletal hypomineralization and pathogenic mineralization in soft connective tissue, arteries, and heart valves. There is no standard approach to measuring PPi, making it difficult to establish PPi as a biomarker of mineralization disorders. This study aims to determine the impact of time of day, meals, or exercise on plasma PPi homeostasis using a highly sensitive PPi assay. METHODS: In this single-center t

Scurvy in the present times: vitamin C allergy leading to strict fast food diet.

Scurvy results from a deficiency of vitamin C, a nutrient otherwise known as ascorbic acid. Today, scurvy is rare yet emerges in select patients. The patient reported herein developed scurvy secondary to deliberate avoidance of vitamin C-rich foods. Classic cutaneous manifestations of scurvy include follicular hyperkeratosis and perifollicular hemorrhage encompassing coiled "corkscrew" hairs and hairs bent into "swan-neck" deformities. Ecchymoses, purpura, and petechiae are also characteristically prominent. Classic oral abnormalities include erythematous, swollen gingivae that hemorrhage from

Impact of fasting on food craving, mood and consumption in bulimia nervosa and healthy women participants.

Researchers have found that dietary restraint increases food cravings and may contribute to loss of control over eating. Negative mood states often precede food cravings and binge eating. In the present study, we tested the influence of a prolonged food deprivation period over emotional states and food cravings. Twenty-one bulimia nervosa participants and 20 healthy women participants were asked to refrain from any eating for 20 hours and reported, at baseline, after 6 hours and at the end of the fasting period, their mood and craving states. Food consumption was also measured. Fasting increas

Peptide S is a novel potent inhibitor of voluntary and fast-induced food intake in rats.

Peptide S (NPS or PEPS) and its cognate receptor have been recently identified both in the central nervous system and in the periphery. NPS/PEPS promotes arousal and has potent anxiolytic-like effects when it is injected centrally in mice. In the present experiment, we tested by different approaches its central effects on feeding behaviour in Long-Evans rats. PEPS at doses of 1 and 10 microg injected in the lateral brain ventricle strongly inhibited by more than 50% chow intake in overnight fasted rats with effects of longer duration with the highest dose (P<0.0001). A similar decrease was obs

Using the Hilbert Transform to Evaluate the Effects of Functional Foods on Autonomic Nervous System Activity: A Comparison with the Fast Fourier Transform.

Evaluating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) via heart rate variability (HRV) to investigate the effects of food on human health has attracted attention. However, using a conventional HRV analysis via the fast Fourier transform (FFT), it is difficult to remove artifacts such as body movements and/or abnormal physiological responses (unexpected events) from the HRV analysis results. In this study, an analysis combining bandpass filters and the Hilbert transform was applied to HRV data on functional food intake to compare with FFT analysis. HRV data were obtained from six males by recording ele

Do fast foods cause asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema? Global findings from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) phase three.

BACKGROUND: Certain foods may increase or decrease the risk of developing asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. We explored the impact of … egories and with current symptoms of all three conditions. CONCLUSIONS: If the association between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance owing to the rising consumption of fast foods globally.

Fast food consumption patterns in Moroccan adults and their association with the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC) continues to increase globally. Previous research suggests that environmental and behavioral changes, including dietary patterns, may have reduced the age of onset for CRC. Morocco, undergoing a nutritional transition characterized by frequent intake of fast food and industrial food products high in refined sugars, meat, and saturated animal fats, is facing an increase in CRC cases. The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between fast food consumption and its association with the risk of EO-CRC in Moroccan adu

Construction of a Dual-Mode Sensing Platform for Ultra-fast Detection of Bisulfite in Food and Environmental Systems.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is widely used in food processing to extend the shelf life of food. However, excessive intake of SO2 and its derivatives (HSO3- and SO32-) can cause oxidative damage to the body, and result in several diseases. How to construct probes for rapid real-time detection of HSO3- in the field is beneficial to the developmental needs of practical applications, but it is also very challenging. Here we report a dual-mode fluorescent probe Rh-QL for ultrafast detection of HSO3-, which undergoes a specific 1,4-Michael addition reaction with HSO3- to achieve near-infrared fluorescence

Intermittent fasting protects against food allergy in a murine model via regulating gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of food allergy (FA) is increasing. Decreases in the diversity of gut microbiota may contribute to the pathogenesis of FA by regulating IgE production of B cells. Intermittent fasting (IF) is a popular diet with the potential to regulate glucose metabolism, boosting immune memory and optimizing gut microbiota. The potential effect of long-term IF on the prevention and treatment of FA is still unknown. METHODS: Two IF protocols (16 h fasting/8 h feeding and 24 h fasting/24 h feeding) were conducted on mice for 56 days, while the control mice were free to intake food

Hepatic monoacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 is induced by prolonged food deprivation to modulate the hepatic fasting response.

During prolonged fasting, the liver plays a central role in maintaining systemic energy homeostasis by producing glucose and ketones in processes fueled by oxidation of fatty acids liberated from adipose tissue. In mice, this is accompanied by transient hepatic accumulation of glycerolipids. We found that the hepatic expression of monoacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (Mogat1), an enzyme with monoacylglycerol acyltransferase (MGAT) activity that produces diacyl-glycerol from monoacylglycerol, was significantly increased in the liver of fasted mice compared with mice given ad libitum access to foo
