Patterns of non-firearm homicide.

Sixty-two recent non-firearm homicides dealt with by an inner London public mortuary were studied. The majority of homicides involved stabbing--usually multiple wounds to the trunk. These were followed by blunt instrument homicides--nearly all involved multiple blows to the head, and asphyxiation--usually consisting of strangulation with a ligature being employed in the majority of cases. Homicides tended to occur during the evening and night in spring and early summer. Most victims were found to be in the 20-39 age group, with male victims outnumbering females in a 2:1 ratio. A marked differe

Characteristics of pediatric firearm fatalities.

An increase in the awareness of the problem of gunshot fatalities in children has occurred nationwide over the last year. Unintentional firearm deaths are more common among children and young adults. These deaths may be addressed by preventive measures beyond those available for pediatric firearm suicide and homicide. This study focuses on the incidence of fatal gunshot injuries in children under 16 years of age during the years 1979 through 1987 in our state. Over the past 9 years 132 children (0 to 16 years) were shot and killed as a result of firearm injuries (M:F ratio, 3:1). No difference

Fracture of the coronoid and pterygoid processes by firearms: case report.

A rare case of fracture of the coronoid and the pterygoid process caused by firearms is described. A 28-year-old male was hit by a bullet in the face, resulting in restricted mouth opening, difficulty in chewing and pain when opening the mouth. Clinical examination revealed a perforating wound in the right parotid region and a similar wound on the left side of the same region. A CT scan showed comminuted fracture of the left coronoid process and bilateral comminuted fracture of the pterygoid processes. Treatment was conservative, speech therapy was conducted and it was successful. Details of t

Firearm Thefts from Vehicles in the United States: Results from a National Survey of Firearm Owners.

This study examines the prevalence, characteristics, and behavioral responses associated with firearm thefts from vehicles in the United States. Data are from a national survey of firearm owners conducted by YouGov in February-March 2026 (n = 1,976). Overall, 2.7% of respondents reported having experienced a firearm theft from a vehicle. Multivariable Firth logistic regression analyses indicated that older age was associated with lower odds of experiencing a theft, while non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic respondents had significantly higher odds compared to non-Hispanic White respondents. Among

Firearm availability and unintentional firearm deaths, suicide, and homicide among 5-14 year olds.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, only motor vehicle crashes and cancer claim more lives among children than do firearms. This national study attempts to determine whether firearm prevalence is related to rates of unintentional firearm deaths, suicides, and homicides among children. METHODS: Pooled cross-sectional time-series data (1988-1997) were used to estimate the association between the rate of violent death among 5-14 year olds and four proxies of firearm availability, across states and regions. RESULTS: A statistically significant association exists between gun availability and the ra

Injuries caused by firearms treated at Brazilian urgent and emergency healthcare services.

This paper analyzes the medical care given at Brazilian urgent and emergency healthcare services to people injured by firearms in 2014. A cross-sectional study was carried out on care given to patients with firearms injuries in 24 capital cities of Brazilian states and in the Brazilian Federal District, included in the VIVA Survey. Simple and relative frequencies of the variables related to the patients and to the event were calculated, and a logistic model for complex samples was applied adopting care for firearms injuries patients as outcome. The results show the following percentages of car

Firearms as a Market-Driven Epidemic: Potential Pathways to Reduce Preventable Firearm-Related Harm in the United States.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points For half a century, firearm-related deaths and injuries have been endemic in the United States, with COVID-19 contributing to a record high of 48,830 deaths in 2021, an epidemic rate increase. By 2023, national trends masked a significant 10-fold difference in firearm-related death rates among states. Over decades, some states have experienced large, sustained reductions in firearm-related death rates, while others have experienced increases. Firearms are a consumer product that fit the definition of a market-driven epidemic (MDE), with the firearms industry having su

Anticipatory firearm safety planning among older adult firearm owners: Attitudes toward physician involvement.

BACKGROUND: Firearm access in the setting of cognitive decline represents a critical but underrecognized risk for suicide, homicide, and unintentional injury. Despite this, anticipatory firearm safety planning for individuals at risk of dementia remains poorly studied. Understanding patient perspectives, particularly regarding physician involvement, may identify opportunities for upstream injury prevention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adults aged ≥60 years with firearm ownership or household firearm access, recruited from inpatient and outpatient settings at a single Lev

Beliefs Among Veteran Firearm Owners Regarding Whether Clinicians Should Discuss Firearm Safety With Patients.

IMPORTANCE: Veterans are at increased risk of suicide, and guidelines recommend assessing firearm access and counseling to reduce access among patients with elevated suicide risk. How veterans view such discussions is critical to the effectiveness of these interactions. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether veteran firearm owners believe clinicians should deliver firearm counseling when patients or their family members are being cared for in specific clinical contexts that suggest heightened risk of firearm injury. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, data were from a pro

Community-Level Risk Factors for Firearm Assault and Homicide: The Role of Local Firearm Dealers and Alcohol Outlets.

BACKGROUND: Identifying community characteristics associated with firearm assault could facilitate prevention. We investigated the effect of community firearm dealer and alcohol outlet densities on individual risk of firearm assault injury. METHODS: In this density-sampled case-control study of Californians, January 2005-September 2015, cases comprised all residents with a fatal or nonfatal firearm assault injury. For each month, we sampled controls from the state population in a 4:1 ratio with cases. Exposures were monthly densities of county-level pawn and nonpawn firearm dealers and ZIP co

Late arteriovenous fistulas and pseudoaneurysms of the extremity secondary to civilian firearms.

To evaluate the treatment of late sequelae of penetrating arterial injuries associated with civilian firearms, such as false aneurysms and arteriovenous fistulas (AV-Fs) of the extremities, a retrospective clinical study was carried out. Whenever diagnosis or operative management is delayed because of local fibrosis or morphological and structural vessel changes, primary repair is not feasible and segmental resection is required. Twenty-four patients presenting late false aneurysms (14) and AV-Fs (11) of the extremities, caused by firearms (6 rifle wounds, and 18 pistol wounds), were identifie

Caregivers' reported views on firearm counseling.

BACKGROUND: Firearm related injuries are the leading cause of death in children older than one year of age. Safety counseling and prevention are cornerstones of injury prevention. This survey study sought to assess caregivers' recollection of firearm safety counseling and who provided that counseling in the past two years. It further sought to determine whom they entrusted to provide this information, and their preferred modalities for future counseling. Secondary objectives included assessing the relationship between parental perspectives on who provided this counseling and how this counselin
