BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk of cancer in humans. Nuclear workers receive low doses over a relatively long period of time.
METHODS: A mortality study of a cohort of workers exposed to ionizing radiation at Electricité de France (EDF) was conducted. The cohort consisted of 22,395 individuals monitored for radiation exposure between 1961 and 1994, and followed-up for an average of 11.7 years.

Twenty-six white male subjects, who worked with plutonium (239Pu) during World War II at Los Alamos, have been given medical examinations periodically over a period of 42 y to identify potential health effects. Inhalation was the primary mode of Pu exposures. The latest examinations, including urine bioassay and in-vivo measurements for radioactivity, were performed in late 1986 and 1987. Invasive cardiology laboratory workers are occupationally exposed to chronic ionizing radiation. It is known that ionizing radiation has a damaging effect on chromosomes. In present study. we investigated the frequency of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberrations in 11 invasive cardiology laboratory workers and 11 healthy controls. After a vacation period, we took blood samples for chromosome analysis in months 0, 4, 8 and 12 (last two month period was the nonradiation time). The SCE frequencies did not change significantly after exposure to ionizing radiation in any worker.
