The correlation between an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an enhanced calcium entry in primed neutrophils stimulated with fMLP suggests that endogenous ROS could serve as an agonist to reinforce calcium signaling by positive feedback. Hydrogen peroxide is a widely available disinfectant that has been reported to cause colitis. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who presented with an acute proctitis caused by a self-inflicted 3% hydrogen peroxide enema. The patient's intention was to cure himself of a recently diagnosed prostate cancer, because the waiting list for oncological consultation was deemed too long. The pathogenesis of hydrogen peroxide mucosal injury and a review of the literature is discussed.

Ideas prevailing in 1991 on hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous humor are outlined. They are critically examined under the light of our finding that the method used to establish aqueous humor levels of peroxide generates itself peroxide during the short time span of the analysis. This is due to the fact that the probe used, dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP), spontaneously auto-oxidizes in the presence of oxygen. Studies of 54 antioxidants revealed that 27 of them, mainly polyphenols, generated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when added to Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM), other media used for culture of mammalian and yeast cells and phosphate-buffered saline. Herein, we report a mild thermal assisted process for urea synthesis through a one-pot tandem process using sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the presence of iron filings (f-Fe) and hydrogen peroxide at ∼150 °C and ∼10 bar CO2 pressure. This study examines the hydrogen peroxide concentrations measured near four models of hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, from two manufacturers, monitored in seven hospitals across the U.S. and Canada over several years. The results showed that the majority of sterilizers do not emit hazardous levels of hydrogen peroxide and none of them exceeded the OSHA PEL of 1 ppm (8-hr time-weighted average (TWA)), however several of the sterilizers exceeded 3 ppm, the short-term exposure limit in two states: Washington and Hawaii. Two polymorphic hydrogen peroxide solvates of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20; wurtzitane is an alternative name to iceane) were obtained using hydrated α-CL-20 as a guide. These novel H2 O2 solvates have high crystallographic densities (1.96 and 2.03 g cm-3 , respectively), high predicted detonation velocities/pressures (with one solvate performing better than ϵ-CL-20), and a sensitivity similar to that of ϵ-CL-20. A 92-year-old woman presented with severe acute haemorrhagic gastritis due to abuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Two cases of severe complications due to injection of hydrogen peroxide under pressure into areas of muscular attrition in war wounds are reported. In both cases the administration of hydrogen peroxide was associated with tachypnoea, with major arterial desaturation and a precordial "mill-wheel" murmur was heard. We have measured the effects of hydrogen peroxide on the ability of the isolated rabbit cornea to maintain normal hydration during perfusion, on the structure of the endothelial cells, and on the redox state of glutathione and the activity of the hexose monophosphate shunt in these cells. Lung tissues are frequently exposed to a hyperoxia environment, which leads to oxidative stress injuries.
