Transuterine migration of an IUCD is a rare complication, more spectacular than serious. In general asymptomatic or associated with only minor symptoms, such a perforation usually passes unnoticed. The diagnosis is made when the absence of the string at the cervix is noted at routine examination, and may be proved by radiological examination of the uterine cavity. Treatment consists of removal of the migratory foreign body either by coelioscopy or by laparotomy. Although the no single mechanism for the occurrence of such perforations exists, this study confirmed the high incidence of this comp

Uterine perforation is an uncommon but potentially adverse outcome of intrauterine device (IUD) placement. It often occurs around the time of insertion and may go unnoticed, though delayed perforation can also present months or years later. Diagnosis is typically suspected when IUD strings are not visualized on vaginal examination and confirmed by imaging demonstrating displacement, perforation, or migration. Definitive management requires device removal. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with silent migration of a levonorgestrel-releasing IUD into the peritoneal cavity. IUD displaceme

Peritonitis is a major complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, often requiring a switch to hemodialysis (HD). Common sources of bacterial peritonitis are touch contamination and PD catheter-related infection. Intra-abdominal pathology is a less common cause of peritonitis in PD patients, and rarely is Neisseria mucosa the causative organism. We present an uncommon case of N. mucosa peritonitis in a 30-year-old African American female patient treated with nocturnal intermittent PD. The infection occurred in the setting of a translocated intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) in the

INTRODUCTION: The intrauterine device (IUD) is a popular family planning method worldwide. Some of the complications associated with insertion of an IUD are well described in the literature. The frequency of IUD perforation is estimated to be between 0.05 and 13 per 1000 insertions. There are many reports of migrated intrauterine devices, but far fewer reports of IUDs which have penetrated into the small intestine.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein we report a case of perforated intrauterine device embedded in the small intestine. By using a wound protector retraction device, and fashioning the anasto

The intrauterine contraceptive device is a popular form of contraception for women; however, it does carry a rare but serious risk of migration into the myometrium and then into the peritoneal cavity. We report an unusual case of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) migrating through the uterus into the peritoneal cavity and subsequently into the sigmoid colon, which was finally retrieved laparoscopically. We also discuss three different methods for the retrieval of a migrated IUCD: colonoscopy, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy and compare and contrast each method.

Foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract often cause serious complications, such as perforation, obstruction, abscess formation, or hemorrhage. This is a case in which a patient visited our hospital and complained of a vague lower abdominal pain that had been present for three months. She had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted five years earlier. The abdominal X-ray, computed tomography and colonoscopy revealed that the IUD had penetrated into the descending colon. We tried to remove the IUD by colonoscopy but failed due to pain, so we removed the IUD surgically. Thus, we report a case

Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is one of the most commonly used long-term contraceptive methods worldwide. Migration of IUD is one of the rare complications of IUD insertion. Migrated IUD with calculus formation is a rarer long-term complication of IUD. A 55-year-old postmenopausal woman attended the outpatient clinic with complaints of continuous dribbling of urine. On examination, there was pooling of urine in the posterior fornix of the vagina, and the calcified vertical stem of the IUD was visualized through the cervical os. On evaluation, a giant calculus was noted within the bla

X-ray radiographs were used to monitor the migration of Renouve -dip radiopaque tracer through the multifilament tail of Dalkon Shield intrauterine devices (IUDs). The movement of the tracer was more rapid and migrated a greater distance through the long end of the tail than through the short end of the tail. The double knot serves as at least a temporary barrier to the migration of tracer from the long end of the tail, but this barrier was circumvented when drops of Renouve -dip radiotracer were placed at both ends of the tail. Migration of Renouve -dip radiotracer was prevented when the end

INTRODUCTION: The intrauterine device is a form of contraception with a long duration of action and few systemic side effects. Migration into the abdominal cavity may occur early or years after insertion giving rise to bowel obstruction, perforation, ischemia, mesenteric injury, strictures or fistulae. Colocolic fistula formation is a rare but serious complication of intrauterine device migration, which may lead to difficulties in diagnosis and device retrieval.

Intravesical migration of intrauterine devices (IUDs) is an uncommon complication that may lead to recurrent urinary tract infections, lower urinary tract symptoms, and bladder stone formation. Diagnosis requires high clinical suspicion and confirmation through imaging and cystoscopy. We present the case of a 33-year-old hypertensive woman with a history of two cesarean deliveries for preeclampsia who underwent IUD placement in 2016. She subsequently developed recurrent urinary tract infections. In 2024, hysteroscopic removal was attempted unsuccessfully. Computed tomography revealed a calcifi

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are often considered a form of contraception by women of reproductive age because of their reversible, effective, safe, and convenient nature. However, its complications include bleeding, infection, displacement, and uterine perforation. As most patients do not exhibit any obvious symptoms, they ignore their complications and are unaware of the necessity of regular evaluation. Therefore, they are unable to implement timely interventions for the complications that can result in serious consequences. Although, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound has demonstrated greater

Intrauterine devices (IUD) are one of the most commonly used methods of contraception worldwide. The long term effect makes it desirable by most patients. The insertion of an IUD is not difficult as a technique but it involves multiple complications such as uterine perforation and migration into the abdominal cavity, urinary bladder perforation, fistula formation, bowel perforation and intra-abdominal adhesions. We present the case of a 31-year-old female patient (para=4) with a medical history of an IUD insertion during her postpartum period in February 2018. In April 2019, during her normal

INTRODUCTION: Colon perforation caused by the intrauterine device (IUD) migration is rare, but severe complication that can occur years after the insertion. Depending on the location of the injured intestine, the different methods for extracting migrated IUD raging from colonoscopy to laparotomy can be chosen.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a commonly used form of contraception worldwide. However, migration of the IUD from its normal position in the uterine fundus is a frequently encountered complication, varying from uterine expulsion to displacement into the endometrial canal to uterine perforation. Different sites of IUD translocation vary in terms of their clinical significance and subsequent management, and the urgency of communicating IUD migration to the clinician is likewise variable. Expulsion or intrauterine displacement of the IUD leads to decreased contraceptive efficacy and should be c

BACKGROUND: Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) remain the mainstay of family planning measures in developing countries, but have been associated with serious complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or omentum. Although perforation of the uterus by an IUD is not uncommon, migration to the sigmoid colon is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of migration of an IUD to the sigmoid colon.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman who had an IUD (Copper T), inserted 1 month after delivery, presented, 7 months later, with secondary amenorrhea and transient pelvic cra

Bladder stones occasionally develop because of foreign bodies in the bladder. Bladder stones in a 30-year-old woman were found to have formed around an intrauterine contraceptive device that had gone missing many years previously and had migrated into the bladder. Plain abdominal radiograms should be a part of the evaluation in patients with a history of an unretrieved intrauterine contraceptive device.

BACKGROUND: The use of intrauterine devices (IUDs) for contraception has increased in many countries. However, their application has some serious complications such as uterine perforation and injury to adjacent organs. The translocated IUD into the bladder is a very rare occurrence.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our case was a 41-year-old woman whose IUD was accidentally discovered in her bladder during a routine ultrasound. The IUD has migrated from its normal position in the uterus to the bladder. The IUD was successfully removed by cystoscopy without any complications.
CONCLUSION: The mislocation of

Background: An intrauterine device is commonly used for contraception globally. Although intrauterine device placement is an effective and safe method of contraception, migration into the bladder with stone formation is a rare and serious complication. The management approaches for an intrauterine device embedded in the bladder include endoscopic procedures and open surgical removal. In this study, we report the case of a patient with recurrent urinary tract infection associated with intrauterine device migration and urolithiasis, who successfully underwent endoscopic treatment combined with l…
