Effectiveness of two commercial infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis vaccines.

Two commercially available infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) vaccines were evaluated for their effectiveness in protecting cattle from disease caused by experimental challenge exposure and natural transmission of Moraxella bovis infections. The study was conducted as 2 experiments, using a total of 81 cattle that were culture-negative for M bovis prior to vaccination. In each experiment, young adult cattle were randomly allotted to 4 groups. Each calf in groups 1 and 2 was vaccinated according to the vaccine manufacturer's directions. Groups 3 and 4 were unvaccinated controls. Three

Future Directions for Research in Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

In this article, the authors summarize the future needs from a research perspective to make the greatest gains. They discuss the areas of research: diagnosis, epidemiology, economic impact, prevention, and treatment. In some areas, simple studies with little cost could be conducted that would quickly add to the evidence base. In other areas, substantial investment is needed if new study approaches, which do not repeat past studies' failures, are to be conducted. To maximize the value of research funding, it is essential to critically evaluate the information gains from prior studies and ensure

Ovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis in sheep: the farmer's perspective.

The objective of this study was to gather current, farmer-reported data on the frequency of occurrence, risk factors and treatment practices for the sheep eye disease, ovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis (OIKC). A questionnaire regarding eye disease in sheep was completed by 135 farmers from four livestock markets. Most farmers (87%) had observed OIKC in their flock, 88% of these within the last 2 years. Farmers reported observing most cases in the winter months (51%) and fewest in the summer (10%). They proposed housing and forage feeding from racks as factors associated with OIKC. A variet

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis of ibex, chamois and other Caprinae.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) caused by Mycoplasma conjunctivae is a highly contagious ocular infection which is common in domestic sheep and goats. In the European Alps, IKC is often observed in Alpine chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra) and in Alpine ibex (Capra i. ibex), but the disease has also been described in other wild Caprinae in the Pyrenees and in New Zealand. The infection is characterised by inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, and in the most advanced stages, the cornea is opaque or even perforated. In IKC outbreaks in chamois and ibex, spontaneous recovery is the mos

A national survey of the occurrence of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A national mail survey of 4880 beef and dairy producers was undertaken to record details of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. One thousand four hundred and fifty eight (29.8%) questionnaires were returned. The survey confirmed the widespread nature of the disease with higher prevalence in the summer months, in calves and dairy cattle, and in Bos taurus breeds. The constant prevalence contrasts with the disease in New Zealand where it is increasing.

Face Flies and Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (Pink Eye).

Musca autumnalis or face fly plays a central role in the incidence and severity of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) outbreaks in cattle operations. Face flies feed on ocular and nasal secretions of cattle causing ocular irritation and trauma. This allows for the spread of the organisms that are responsible for cases of IBK and makes face fly control a central component of preventative programs designed to minimize the incidence of IBK. Understanding the lifecycle of the face fly is crucial to construct control measures designed to minimize both fly numbers and disease incidence.

Enhancement of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis by modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccine.

The effects of a modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccine (administered ocularly or intranasally) on experimentally induced infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis were evaluated. The modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccine was administered to 13 male Holstein calves (intranasally in 4 and ocularly in 9; day 0). Five calves were not vaccinated and served as controls. Calves were examined daily and, starting on day 4, Moraxella bovis was administered ocularly to all 18 calves once daily for 4 days. The eyes of all calves were assigned a clinical score,

Early detection of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis with artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was developed to distinguish cattle by their muzzle patterns and identify early cases of disease, including infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). It was tested on 870 cattle in four locations, with 170 developing IBK. The AI identified 169 of the 170 cases prior to their identification by veterinarians, and another 17 cases that remained free of IBK signs (sensitivity = 99.4%, specificity = 97.6%). These results indicate the AI can detect emerging IBK cases by muzzle images very early in the disease process and be used as an intervention tool in the prevent

Moraxella bovoculi and infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: cause or coincidence?

Moraxella bovoculi is a recently described gram-negative coccus that was isolated from eyes of calves with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK, or "pinkeye") in 2002. This organism probably has been associated with IBK for many years and, until it was shown to be distinct from M ovis, may have been incorrectly identified as M ovis, Branhamella ovis, M ovis-like, or B ovis-like by diagnostic laboratories. M bovoculi can be isolated from normal calves and cattle with IBK or conjunctivitis. An exact role for M bovoculi in the pathogenesis of IBK is uncertain; however, anecdotal evidence o

A mycoplasma isolated from cattle with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A mycoplasma has been recovered from the eyes of calves in two naturally-occurring outbreaks of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis; also from a third group of calves accidentally exposed to an animal which had ocular exudates from one of the outbreaks instilled into its eyes. The severity of the ocular lesions in infectious bovine keratoconjunctivis outbreaks may be related to a mixed infection with the mycoplasma and Moraxella bovis. Preliminary typing studies indicate the mycoplasma is not serologically related to any known bovine mycoplasma.

Applying Concepts of Causal Inference to Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

Establishing causation, otherwise known as causal assessment, is a difficult task, made more difficult by the variety of causal assessment frameworks available to consider. In this article, Bradford Hill viewpoints are used to discuss the evidence base for Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi being component causes of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Each of the nine Bradford Hill viewpoints are introduced and explained: strength, consistency, specificity, temporality, biologic gradient, plausibility, coherence, experiment, and analogy. Examples of how the viewpoints have been applied

Bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis: serological aspects of Moraxella bovis infection.

A modification of a gel diffusion precipitin test (GDPT) was used to detect antibodies for Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) in the sera of cattle affected with bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis (BIK). The test was also used for the detection of sequential antibody development in cattle vaccinated with cultures of M. bovis. Also, strains of M. bovis isolated from cattle herds affected with BIK were characterized serologically as a part of an identification scheme using the test.A comparison of the antigenic properties of various strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms was conducted using
