The bonding strategy cannot effectively address the inherent limitations of layered nanozymes, resulting in their failure to maintain stability within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, ammonium (NH4+)-intercalated δ-MnO2 nanozymes (N-MnO2) were constructed through the acid-base neutralization strategy. Due to interlayer van der Waals interactions, the NH4+ is stabilized in a nonbonded configuration. Significantly, nonbonding NH4+ exhibits unique electron-manipulating capabilities, enabling precise regulation of Mn 3d spin electrons from a high-spin state (t2g3eg1) to low-spin (t2g4eg0)

Jacobsite is a relatively rare mineral of composition MnFe2O4, found in Urandi (Bahia State) in Brazil. It is also a common species in the deep-sea manganese nodules, attracting the interest of many mineral-extracting companies. Because of its spinel constitution similar to magnetite, Jacobsite is commonly called a manganese-ferrite. However, the manganese/iron content may vary substantially according to its origin, demanding specific studies in each case. The Jacobsite mineral inspired our laboratory synthesis of the analogous manganese ferrite nanoparticles. The direct synthesis by the copre

The reversibility of monovalent thallium (Tl) absorption on widely distributed iron/manganese secondary minerals may affect environmental Tl migration and global cycling. Nevertheless, quantitative and mechanistic studies on the interfacial retention and release reactions involving Tl(I) are limited. In this study, batch and stirred-flow experiments, unified kinetics modeling, spectral detection, and theoretical calculations were used to elucidate the retention behaviors of Tl(I) on goethite, hematite, and manganite with different solution pH values and Tl loading concentrations. Sustained Tl(

Solutions of potassium permanganate in 3 M sulfuric acid, 1 M sodium hydroxide solution, and water can be used to degrade hazardous compounds. Excess oxidant can be removed by using sodium metabisulfite. Manganese, a carcinogen and mutagen, can be removed from the final reaction mixtures by making these mixtures strongly basic. Aqueous dilution causes the soluble potassium sulfate to dissolve while still allowing the insoluble manganese compounds to be removed by filtration and so reduces the weight of precipitate. In all cases the amount of manganese left in the filtrates was less than 2 ppm

Heterogeneous crystallization of manganese (oxyhydr)oxides (MnOx) on iron (oxyhydr)oxides (FeOx) is crucial for the biogeochemical cycling of Mn, yet atomic-level insights into this process are important but relatively limited. Herein, we revealed the distinct adsorption, oxidation, and crystallization mechanisms of Mn on hematite (Hem), ferrihydrite (Fhy), and goethite (Gth). Gth exhibited highest ability in Mn(II) removal and oxidation, followed by Hem and Fhy. Manganite and hausmannite were the main MnOx products with distinct proportions, and morphologies cross the systems. MnOx growth mec

Controllable preparation is the current frontier in the field of inorganic nanomaterial-based artificial enzymes (nanozymes). For ferrites, the factors affecting cation occupancy are very complex, making the modulation of cation occupancy extremely challenging. Herein, we report a new strategy to modulate the cation occupancy of manganese ferrite (MFO) based on the structural properties of nanoclay (i.e., montmorillonite K10). It demonstrates that montmorillonite K10 mainly changes the valence state and occupancy of manganese ions in manganese ferrite and not iron ions. K10 increases the propo

The previous studies have shown that iron-manganese co-oxide film (MeOx) could simultaneously remove ammonium, manganese ion and bisphenol A. In this study, the removal of fulvic acid (FA) was explored by adding potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) to heighten the catalytic activity of MeOx. After adding about 3.0 mg/L potassium ferrate, the elimination efficiency of 7.0 mg/L FA by the MeOx increased from 20 to 50%. The effects of temperature and ammonium on the elimination of FA were investigated. Higher temperature (above 22 °C) and higher ammonium concentration (above 2.0 mg/L) caused a decrease in F

Free amino acid pools have been investigated in a citric acid accumulating strain of Aspergillus niger during batch growth under manganese sufficient and deficient conditions by means of an improved chromatographic method. Studies on the mycelial content of several nitrogenous compounds under manganese sufficient and deficient conditions showed that manganese deficiency resulted in lower amino acid pool sizes during trophophase and considerable accumulation during idiophase, and in a reduction of the protein and nucleic acid contents. Addition of cycloheximide to mycelia grown with sufficient

Manganese and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) are known to induce neurological pathologies similar to that of parkinsonism. Previous studies performed in rat striatal slices have shown that MPTP and related compounds inhibit tyrosine hydroxylation, a rate-limiting step of dopamine biosynthesis. Here, we reported that manganese inhibited tyrosine hydroxylation in rat striatal slices. In addition, manganese caused increase in the levels of lactate indicating that aerobic glycolysis was inhibited in striatal slices. This inhibition was unique to manganese since other divalent

The oxidation and immobilization of arsenic (As) by manganese oxides have been shown to reduce As toxicity and bioavailability under abiotic conditions. In this study, we investigate the impact of manganese oxide (δ-MnO2) on the fate of different Fe-minerals-adsorbed As in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria Bacillus sp. JQ. Results showed that in the absence of δ-MnO2, As release in goethite was much higher than in ferrihydrite and hematite during microbial reduction. Adding 3.1 mM Mn reduced As release by 0.3%, 46.3%, and 6.7% in the ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite groups, respectiv

The aim of this project is to fabricate hydrogen-rich silicone doped with magnetic nanoparticles for use as a temperature change indicator in magnetic resonance imaging-guided (MRIg) thermal ablations. To avoid clustering, the particles of mixed MnZn ferrite were synthesized directly in a medical-grade silicone polymer solution. The particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, temperature-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry (20 °C to 60 °C, at 3.0 T), and magnetic reso

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are emerging halogenated organic compounds detected in various environmental matrices, including marine environments. However, the origins of PHCZs are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the manganese oxide-mediated transformation of carbazole into PHCZs under marine-related conditions. Brominated and chlorinated carbazoles were produced through manganese oxide-mediated oxidation of carbazole in the presence of halide ions, with brominated carbazoles being the dominant species. Both reactive bromine species (RBS) and reactive chlorine species w

BACKGROUND: Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is a critical biomarker for evaluating the nutritional quality of food and efficacy of pharmaceutical formulations. Colorimetric detection offers operational simplicity and visual readout, yet its sensitivity depends on efficient catalyst development. Nanozymes have emerged as stable, cost-effective alternatives to natural enzymes. Manganese dioxide (MnO2) exhibits intrinsic oxidase-like activity but suffers from poor conductivity and sluggish electron transfer kinetics. Engineering efficient MnO2-based oxidase mimics without hydrogen peroxide depen

Thermal catalytic degradation of formaldehyde (HCHO) over manganese-based catalysts is garnering significant attention. In this study, both theoretical simulations and experimental methods were employed to elucidate the primary reaction pathways of HCHO on the MnO2(110) surface. Specifically, the effects of doping MnO2 with elements such as Fe, Ce, Ni, Co, and Cu on the HCHO oxidation properties were evaluated. Advanced characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we

The abiotic oxidation of divalent manganese (Mn(II)) and the formation of Mn oxides are important geochemical processes, which control the mobility and availability of Mn as well as element cycling and pollutant behavior in soils. It was found that iron (oxyhydr)oxides can catalyze Mn(II) oxidation, but the effects of the coexisting dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules on the catalysis of different iron (oxyhydr)oxides for Mn(II) oxidation are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated Mn(II) oxidation under the impacts of the interactions between iron (oxyhydr)oxides (i.e., ferrihydrite,

The stockpiling of vanadium-containing tailings allows vanadium to migrate into the surrounding area, resulting in toxic metal contamination. By using the vanadium-bearing iron/manganese (Fe/Mn) oxide agglomerates as the simulated tailings, the feasibility of photo-induced reduction of vanadium by oxalic acid was investigated. Batch effects of the available light and the reducing agents on agglomerates were investigated. Results showed that oxalic acid (5 mmol L-1) can convert V(V) to V(IV) and convert Fe(III) released from the Fe/Mn oxide agglomerates to Fe(II) under both light and dark condi

A promising and easily prepared catalytic filler media, manganese-oxide-coated zeolite (MOCZ), for the removal of Mn (II) contamination in groundwater was studied. The optimal condition for MOCZ preparation was given as follows: acid activation of zeolite with 5% HCl mass percent for 12 h, then soaking of acid-activated zeolite with 7% KMnO4 mass percent for 8 h, and finally calcination at 300°C for 5 h. Acid activation significantly enlarged the specific surface area of the zeolite (>79 m2 g-1), subsequently enhancing the coating of manganese oxides onto the surface of the zeolite. This was f

Manganese-based compounds, especially manganese oxides, are one of the most exceptional electrode materials. Specifically, manganese oxides have gained significant interest owing to their unique crystal structures, high theoretical capacity, abundant natural availability and eco-friendly nature. However, as transition metal semiconductors, manganese oxide possess low electrical conductivity, limited rate capacity, and suboptical cycle stability. Thus, combining manganese oxides with carbon or other metallic materials can significantly improve their electrochemical performance. These composites

A procedure based on differential pulse polarography is described for the determination of manganese at ng ml levels in fresh, estuarine and sea-water buffered at pH 9.5 with a citrate-borate solution that also serves as supporting electrolyte. The procedure is unaffected by the potentially interfering compounds most likely to occur in natural waters. Furthermore, iron (in ascorbate-borate buffer, pH 9.5) or chromium (in ascorbate-ammonia-ammonium-chloride buffer, pH 9.8) can be determined together with manganese. Some results for the concentration of manganese, iron and chromium in the River
