Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a serious degenerative muscular disease affecting males. Diagnosis usually occurs in childhood and is confirmed through genetic testing and/or muscle biopsy. Accompanying the disease are several nutrition-related concerns: growth, body composition, energy and protein requirements, constipation, swallowing difficulties, bone health, and complementary medicine. This review article addresses the nutrition aspects of DMD.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an allelic X-linked progressive muscle-wasting disease, is one of the most common single-gene disorders in the developed world. Despite knowledge of the underlying genetic causation and resultant pathophysiology from lack of dystrophin protein at the muscle sarcolemma, clinical intervention is currently restricted to symptom management. In recent years, however, unprecedented advances in strategies devised to correct the primary defect through gene- and cell-based therapeutics hold particular promise for treating dystrophic muscle. Conventional gene replaceme

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common muscular dystrophy of childhood. This incurable disease is characterised by muscle wasting and loss of walking ability leading to complete wheelchair dependence by 13 years of age. Prolongation of walking is one of the major aims of treatment.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess whether glucocorticoid corticosteroids stabilize or improve muscle strength and walking in boys with DMD.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group specialised register (October 2003) using the term 'Duchenne muscular

Dysphagia and aspiration seem to be rare in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but cachexia can be associated with early death. Commonly, weight loss can be attributed to inadequate caloric intake caused by loss of ability to self-feed and/or fatigue. Our objective was to determine whether scoliosis repair is associated with malnutrition. A retrospective chart review was undertaken of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, including those who underwent operative repair of scoliosis. We identified nine boys who lost > 5% body weight within 12 months of surgery. Eight patients who gained weight af

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, circumstances, and outcome of fractures in males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) attending neuromuscular clinics. Three hundred and seventy-eight males (median age 12 years, range 1 to 25 years) attending four neuromuscular centres were studied by case-note review supplemented by GP letter or by interview at the time of clinic attendance. Seventy-nine (20.9%) of these patients had experienced fractures. Forty-one percent of fractures were in patients aged 8 to 11 years and 48% in independently ambulant patients. Falling was th

In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), sphincter muscles tend to be clinically spared. However, urinary incontinence is occasionally reported, usually late in the course of the disease. We wished to determine the etiology of urinary dysfunction in patients with DMD. Seven boys with DMD and urinary dysfunction were examined by a neurologist and a urologist followed by urodynamic and electrophysiological assessment. Based on the results of these evaluations, patients were defined as having an upper motor neuron (UMN), lower motor neuron (LMN), or myopathic lesion. Five of the patients had UMN abn

Cognitive function and dystrophin gene mutations were investigated in 50 DMD patients (mean age 11.1 yr; range 3.5-20.3). General intelligence assessment showed 31% of patients with Wechsler full intelligence quotient (FIQ) lower than 75 (normal values: 100 +/- 14), and only 24% with appropriate FIQ level. Modal distribution of Wechsler verbal, performance, and FIQs, and Raven IQs was normal. Verbal IQ was more affected than performance IQ (PIQ) only in the younger group of subjects. Low PIQ correlated with the presence of macroglossia, detected in 13 out of 50 patients. Impairment of producti

We have identified a Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) pedigree where the disease is associated with a molecular deletion within the DMD locus. We have examined the meiotic segregation products of the common female ancestor using marker restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) detected by probes that lie within this deletion. These studies show that this female has transmitted three distinct types of X chromosome to her offspring. This observation may be explained by postulating that the mutation arose as a postzygotic deletion within this common ancestor, who was consequently germina

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked muscle wasting disease with childhood onset that leads to loss of ambulation in the teenage years and mortality in the second or third decade of life. Prior to 10 years ago, disease-modifying pharmacologic intervention was limited to glucocorticoid steroids. However, in the past decade, several new medications have been approved for use in DMD. These medications work by different mechanisms along the disease pathway that lead to progressive muscle damage in DMD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Seven new medications for DMD have been a

UNLABELLED: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common childhood muscular dystrophy and occurs primarily in males, affecting 1 in 3600-6000 live male births. The natural course of DMD results in a profound, progressive decline in muscle strength, requiring the use of a wheelchair, typically by age 13, and ultimately leading to fatal respiratory and cardiac dysfunction by young adulthood. Musculoskeletal care for patients with DMD often centers around preventing and managing contractures, fractures, and scoliosis. Medical considerations that affect musculoskeletal care include osteope

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe degenerative disease that remains incurable. Its prognosis has been transformed by multidisciplinary care, which has significantly improved the life expectancy of patients. Corticosteroids have been used for over 20 years and have modified the care of young boys with DMD: They delay the loss of ambulation, support the gradual introduction of technical mobility aids, and reduce the frequency of scoliosis surgery. Corticoids are started and maintained at the theoretical dose of 0.75 mg/kg/day of prednisone/prednisolone or 0.9 mg/kg/day of deflazacort

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating disease that results in life-limiting complications such as loss of skeletal muscle function as well as respiratory and cardiac complications. Advanced therapeutics in pulmonary care have significantly reduced respiratory complication-related mortality, making cardiomyopathy the main determinant factor of survival. While there are multiple therapies such as the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, and ventilatory assistance targeted toward delaying the disease progression in DMD, a cure remains elusive. In the last decade, several

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a monogenic muscle-wasting disorder and a priority candidate for molecular and cellular therapeutics. Although rare, it is the most common inherited myopathy affecting children and so has been the focus of intense research activity. It is caused by mutations that disrupt production of the dystrophin protein, and a plethora of drug development approaches are under way that aim to restore dystrophin function, including exon skipping, stop codon readthrough, gene replacement, cell therapy and gene editing. These efforts have led to the clinical approval of fou

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive neuromuscular disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 3500-5000 males. DMD manifests as childhood-onset muscle degeneration, followed by loss of ambulation, cardiomyopathy, and death in early adulthood due to a lack of functional dystrophin protein. Out-of-frame mutations in the dystrophin gene are the most common underlying cause of DMD. Gene editing via the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) system is a promising therapeutic for DMD, as it can permanently correct DMD mutations and thus restore

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common X-linked neuromuscular disorder. When boys with DMD reach the second decade of life, they lose their ability to walk and become wheelchair dependent. Standing devices and orthoses are considered to be an essential component in the therapy management of DMD. Clinical opinion and research from other neurological conditions highlight the proposed benefits of standing device use, however, its effect within this population is currently unknown. A review of the evidence for the use of standing devices and orthoses is necessary to infor

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) currently depends on non-specific measures such as Creatine kinase (CK) levels. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small, endogenous RNAs of 21-25 nucleotides, that are important regulators for numerous physiological and pathological processes. The aim of the current study is to assess the potential of miRNAs as non-invasive biomarker for the diagnosis of DMD and for identifying carriers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects and 29 families with one member diagnosed with DMD were enrolled in the study. Peripheral blood samp
