Rhabdomyosarcoma of the soft palate in three patients with follow-up of longer than ten years.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the head and neck is a rare childhood neoplasm. Most occur in the orbit, which accounts for the scarcity of papers on modern techniques of treatment of soft palate rhabdomyosarcomas. Only 30 cases of soft palate rhabdomyosarcoma have been reported in recent years and none had long-term follow-up periods (greater than 10 yr). This study reports three cases of pediatric soft palate rhabdomyosarcomas treated with surgery, radiotherapy (two of three), and chemotherapy. The complications that occurred in one patient are discussed.

Solitary neurofibroma of the palate mimicking mucocele: A rare case report.

Neurofibroma is a benign, slow-growing, peripheral nerve neoplasm. It presents as a solitary tumor or component of neurofibromatosis (NF) and von Recklinghausen's disease. The occurrence of solitary neurofibromas in the oral cavity is less frequent, and those in the palate are reported in less numbers. This report describes an unusual case of solitary neurofibroma in the hard palate which clinically mimicked a mucocele.

A novel method of hard palate reconstruction utilizing a combination of the buccal fat pad and palatal island flap.

The palatal island flap is reliable for single-staged reconstruction of select oral defects. However, fistula formation is a disruptive potential complication. The authors employed this technique in five patients and present a representative case of a 65-year-old female with a left-sided palatal salivary neoplasm. The patient underwent resection and was reconstructed utilizing a combination of the buccal fat pad and palatal island flap. Four of the five patients healed uneventfully. One patient experienced partial loss of the marginal zone of the palatal island flap which successfully granulat

Oro-Nasal Communication.

Breach in the palatal vault leading to an abnormal communication between oral and nasal cavity is known as oro-nasal communication. It is an uncommon presentation in day-to-day clinical practice except in some patients of cleft lip and palate.Etiology may be congenital or acquired. Alveolar and palatal cleft defects are the most common etiological factor. The acquired causes may be trauma, periapical pathology, infections, neoplasms, postsurgical complications, and radio and chemo necrosis.Clinical features like nasal regurgitation of food, defective speech, fetid odor, bad taste, and upper re

Lipoblastoma of the hand and cleft palate: is there a genetic association?

We report a case of lipoblastoma of the hand in a 19-month-old female patient with a history of cleft palate. The incidence of lipoblastoma and cleft palate individually is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 other case of a patient with both cleft palate and lipoblastoma exists in the literature. Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm in adipose tissue almost exclusively found in children younger than 3 years. Cytogenetic testing has shown that lipoblastomas characteristically share a clonal chromosomal rearrangement affecting the long arm of chromosome 8. Furthermore, recent

Surface Papillary Epithelial Hyperplasia (Rough Mucosa) is a Helpful Clue for Identification of Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate surface papillary epithelial hyperplasia, a microscopic finding that corresponds to the clinical finding of rough or stippled mucosa, as a predictor of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA). We conducted a retrospective review of minor salivary gland neoplasms submitted to our biopsy service from 1991 to 2013. Our review was limited to lesions involving the oral cavity/soft palate with the following diagnoses: PLGA, pleomorphic adenoma (PA), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). A total of 202 minor salivary gland ne

Malignant myoepithelioma arising from recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate.

Malignant myoepithelioma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm that can arise either de novo or within a pre-existing pleomorphic adenoma. We report a case of malignant myoepithelioma arising from a pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate. A 70-year-old woman presented in our department with a very large tumor of the soft palate. The patient had a history of a pleomorphic adenoma at the same location that was surgically removed 2 years ago. A second operation, with intraoral excision of the tumor was performed. Histological examination of the recurrence revealed a malignant spindle cell neoplasm wi

Recurrent peripheral odontogenic fibroma. Case report.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POF), an extraosseous variant of the central odontogenic fibroma, is considered an uncommon benign gingival lesion with a small recurrence rate. Clinically, it mimics a variety of benign neoplasms, metastases and reactive lesions, but it is most commonly confused with the peripheral ossifying fibroma. In this report, we describe a healthy 32-year-old male who was seen with a recurrent POF of the right maxilla. The surgical excision site was repaired using a free palatal graft, leading to a favorable outcome in an esthetic region of the oral cavity.

Oncocytic variant of sialadenoma papilliferum - a rare salivary gland tumor: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare minor salivary gland neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The tumor typically affects older people, presenting most commonly as a slow-growing tumor of the hard palate, although other anatomical subsites, comprising the oral cavity and parotid glands, have also been reported. CASE REPORT: We report a SP occurring in a 90-year-old female. The patient described feeling a nodule on her palate for several years. The lesion was painless and clinically resembled a round craterlike ulceration of diameter 3 mm. The e

Metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma masquerading as a chordoma.

A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with otalgia, dysarthria, and weight loss. Neurological examination revealed palatal hypomotility, and weakness of the facial and tongue muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated the presence of a soft tissue mass in the clivus. Histologic examination of resected tumor disclosed well-differentiated thyroid follicles that invaded the local osseous tissues. Physical examination and radioiodine images of the thyroid gland were normal. The serum thyroglobulin concentration was markedly elevated (1011 ng/mL). A 0.9-cm well-differentiated beni

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Minor Salivary Gland in a Patient with Asymptomatic Palatal Swelling - A Case Report.

Incidence of abundant minor salivary gland tissues in the posterior part of hard palate surges the likelihood of salivary gland neoplasm especially in this part of the oral cavity. Minor salivary gland tumor accounts for virtually 15% of all the salivary gland neoplasm, wherein mucoepidermoid carcinoma comprises of 35.9%. Current paper reports a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the posterior part of the hard palate which was an incidental finding. It presented as well-defined smooth swelling, the preliminary radiographic investigation revealed no appreciable bony changes and offered an impr

Malignant myoepithelioma of the soft palate.

Malignant myoepitheliomas (MM) (myoepithelial carcinomas) are rare tumors representing <1% of salivary gland tumors. They are characterized as being locally aggressive. Rarely do they present distant metastases; however, when they do metastasize the sites most affected are the lungs, liver, pleura, peritoneum and skin. They may originate de novo in a pleomorphic adenoma or a benign myoepithelioma. We report the case of a patient with a submucosal lesion of the soft palate measuring ∼4cm×3cm. The patient underwent transoral resection with a microscope and CO2 laser. Histopathological report was

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma in minor salivary gland.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma is a rare neoplasm usually confused with other neoplasms in the salivary glands region. It has great similarity with the breast carcinoma. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival submucosal bleeding and lesion, with the initial histopathological examination revealing salivary gland neoplasm of low crane. Computed tomography revealed the lesion near the tooth 27, with extension to the floor of the left maxillary sinus and to the palate mucosa. Resection of the infra-structure was performed, with a diagnosis of breast cancer secretory carcin

Necrotizing sialometaplasia: literature review and case reports.

The authors describe necrotizing sialometaplasia, a benign inflammatory lesion primarily involving the minor salivary glands of the hard palate. The lesion presents itself as a deep-seated palatal ulcer with clinical and histologic features mimicking those of a malignant neoplasm. The lesion is believed to be the result of vascular ischemia initiated by trauma. An incisional biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis, and the lesion heals by secondary intention within four to 10 weeks.

Plasmacytoid myoepithelioma of the soft palate: a review of the literature and report of a case with immunohistochemical findings.

Myoepitheliomas of salivary glands are rare neoplasms, accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. They are classified into four cell types: epithelioid, spindle, clear, and plasmacytoid. Among them, the plasmacytoid cell type appears to have a predilection for the oral cavity, especially the palate. We presented a 32-year-old man with plasmacytoid myoepithelioma arising in the soft palate, together with a brief discussion of the clinicopathologic features and differential diagnosis in the light of the literature.

A True Fibroma in the Hard Palate: A Report of a Rare Case.

The incidence of benign neoplasms is common in the oral cavity. Provisional diagnosis does not accurately identify rare neoplasms. With differential diagnosis of similar lesions and confirmation by histopathology, rare lesions can be identified. This case report also ended up to be a rare lesion of true fibroma in the palate through a histopathology report. Hence, the correlation of clinical findings to the confirmation with histopathology leads to a definitive diagnosis of uncommon lesions.

Acinic cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa: An unusual presentation.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignant neoplasm of salivary glands affecting predominantly the female population. Unusual occurrences of this neoplasm are reported in hard palate, maxillary sinuses, lip, etc. [1] We report one such case where a submandibular swelling that is provisionally diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma due to its clinical and radiological findings, turned out to be ACC on histopathological evaluation.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of salivary origin.

The recently described hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of salivary tissues joins other clinicopathologic entities in its segregation from the formerly nondescript and heterogeneous classification "clear cell neoplasms." The carcinoma is preponderantly an intraoral (palate and base of tongue) neoplasm that is always infiltrative and capable of regional lymph node metastasis. To date, it has responded to locoregional control treatments and has not been life-consuming.

Canalicular adenoma: palatal presentation of an uncommon lesion.

Canalicular adenoma is a unique, rare, benign salivary gland neoplasm whose reported prevalence varies in different studies. According to literature, this neoplasm has a marked predilection to occur in the upper lip of elderly women. Histological features are usually distinctive and diagnostic. This neoplasm has good prognosis after conservative surgical management but the propensity of multifocal nature and recurrence of this lesion mandates regular follow-up. This case report illustrates the case of a canalicular adenoma in the palate in a 71-year-old male patient. Here, we discuss the diffe
