Cleft palates are congenital or acquired and effect the primary palate (lip) or the secondary (hard and soft) palate. Surgical repair of congenital cleft palate is indicated at an early age. Preservation of maximal tissue and tissue blood supply and a tension-free closure of the defect are requisite for successful repair. Multiple surgical procedures are often performed prior to resolution of this problem. Aspiration pneumonia is often present concurrently and should be treated with appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Results of recent investigations (O'Gara and Logemann, 1990; Estrem and Broen, 1989) indicate that the presence of an unrepaired cleft will influence a toddler's early phonologic development and lexical selectivity. Although additional information is needed to characterize the early vocalizations of children with cleft palate, the available findings underscore the need for early, aggressive speech-language intervention. The education and assistance in language stimulation provided to parents during a child's first year of life can minimize the deleterious effects of an unrepaired palate. Treat…

The necessary information for diagnosis of "cleft palate speech" is available from clinical speech pathology tests and observations for the majority of patients. Test findings about error type and stimulability often give direction to our decisions about speech therapy. Other kinds of tests are useful for confirming these findings or for other purposes. Trial speech therapy is a very useful diagnostic procedure. Problem patients (those who fail to make suitable progress) should be referred without hesitation to a cleft palate team, or to a colleague who is an SLP on that team. Referrals to oth…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study evaluated the prevalence of dental anomalies of number in different subphenotypes of isolated cleft palate.
MATERIALS/METHODS: The sample comprised 26 individuals with submucous cleft palate (group S) and 68 individuals with complete cleft palate (group C) aged between 9 and 12 years from a single centre. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated regarding the presence of dental anomalies of number in permanent teeth. Intergroup comparison was performed using chi-square tests (P < 0.05).
RESULTS: Tooth agenesis was found in 34.61 and 36.76 per cent …

Teratomas is a germ cell tumors, which is rare in the upper palatal and lingual. This article presents a patient with teratomas on the palate and tongue accompanied with cleft palate. The clinical manifestations and histopathological characteristics of teratomas are discussed according to relevant literatures.

UNLABELLED: Although cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common congenital malformations, the presence of an isolated congenital palatal fistula along with a submucous cleft is very rare. This appears as an oval-shaped, full-thickness fenestration in the palatal midline that does not fully extend anteriorly or posteriorly, accompanied by the findings of a submucous cleft. Because of the uncommon nature of this entity, there is controversy about its etiology, diagnosis, and management.
METHODS: Two cases of children with congenital palatal fistulae and a submucous cleft palate are pr…

The histologic and histochemical features of palatine muscles from 53 horses were studied; 25 of the horses were racehorses that had upper airway obstruction associated with dorsal displacement of the soft palate and 28 of the horses did not have any respiratory disorders and served as controls. Pathologic features observed included myonecrosis, phagocytosis, mononuclear cell infiltration of perimysial connective tissue, alkaline phosphatase-positive myofibers, and myofibers with cytoarchitectural changes that included irregular staining of the intermyofibrillar sarcoplasm and sarcoplasmic mas…

The aim of this study was to visualize bony defects of the palate and vomer in submucous cleft palate patients (SMCP) by three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) reconstruction and to classify the range of bony defects. Forty-eight consecutive non-operated SMCP patients were included. Diagnosis was based on the presence of at least one of three classical signs of SMCP: bifid uvula, a translucent zone in the midline of the soft palate, and a palpable 'V' notch on the posterior border of the bony palate. Patients were imaged using spiral CT. 3D reconstruction models were created of the pa…

We have analysed bony defects of the hard palate in patients with submucous cleft palate to find out whether velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is dependent on the extent of these defects. We evaluated the maxillofacial structures associated with cleft palate by 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) in 23 children diagnosed with submucous cleft palate. Bony defects of the hard palate were divided into Type I, defined as absent posterior nasal spine (n=12), Type II, V-shaped bony notch (moderate, n=7), and Type III, as bony defect extending into the incisive foramen (severe, n=4) defects, resp…

The aim of the present study was to compare the morphology of the hard palate of patients with uni- and bilateral cleft lip and palate after palatoplasty using vomer and palatal pedicled flaps with the palatal morphology of non-cleft individuals. Eighty patients were enrolled into this retrospective study: 40 patients with cleft lip and palate (30 unilateral, 10 bilateral) and 40 non-cleft patients with class I occlusion, who served as controls. Analysis of the development of the maxillary arch and evaluation of palatal morphology were accomplished from reformatted CT scans from plaster casts …

Palatal myoclonus is an extremely rare disorder. Tinnitus is secondary to rhythmic involuntary movements of the soft palate. Clinical diagnosis is based on the confirmation of the soft palate movements synchronous with an audible clicking noise outside. In this article, we report a 38-year-old female case with a 10 year-history of continuing ear click, who was diagnosed with essential palatal myoclonus. The disease and its differential diagnosis from symptomatic palatal myoclonus were discussed in the light of literature data.

Palatal ulcers are a common presentation and can be conveniently divided into developmental and acquired causes, the latter of which is subdivided into acute and chronic causes. Most commonly seen dermatologic causes have associated skin manifestations. Acute and multiple ulcers are usually infectious or drug induced in origin. Recurrent ulcers are largely dominated by aphthosis, while chronic ulcers are seen in immunocompromised patients and can occasionally be malignant. It is essential to involve the oral and maxillofacial surgeons early in the therapeutic management to tackle the inevitabl
