Periodicity of microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus in the skin was not believed to exist until investigators in Africa recently demonstrated diurnal periodicity. Interestingly, this maximal density of microfilariae in the skin has been shown to coincide with the peak biting time of the Simulium vector. Microfilarial periodicity of Dirofilaria immitis in the venous blood of infected cats was analyzed by a trigonometric model. Cats were infected by subcutaneous transplantation with 120-day-old juvenile D. immitis. Microfilariae in the blood were first observed 98 days after transplantation. Blood was collected at 4h intervals for a 24h period, and examinations were repeated five times in two cats. The calculated periodicity index was 75.1 and 50.3 in these two cats. The periodicity of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae (mff) in peripheral blood was analysed in 42 microfilaraemics living in Maceió, in Alagoas state, north-eastern Brazil. Nine blood samples were collected from each subject, over a 24-h period, and two quantitative (60-microliter) thick smears were prepared from each sample. A case of atrial tachycardia, 2:1 alternate Wenckebach periodicity and atrial standstill is reported in an 80-year-old woman who complained of exertional dyspnea and occasional syncope for two years. Two blocked P' waves appeared after each Wenckebach period suggesting type B alternating Wenckebach phenomenon (Mobitz type II 2:1 A-V block distal, and Wenckebach conduction proximal).

The possible seasonal periodicity of the occurrence of X-ray-negative dyspepsia (RND), first-time-diagnosed gastric ulcer (GU), and first-time-diagnosed duodenal ulcer (DU) was studied in a 3-year period from 1980 to 1983. Of the 1936 patients studied, 1749 had RND, 100 had GU, and 87 had DU. One or more of the three types of dyspeptic disease were more frequently seen in the period from September through January and less frequently in the period from April through August. The pineal gland and its hormone, melatonin, have been implicated in the regulation of rat circadian rhythmicity. The present study was designed to evaluate whether the pineal has a similar role in the hamster, and to clarify whether the marked rhythm responses to constant light (LL) previously seen in serotonin-depleted hamsters might be attributable to a functional pinealectomy. The results demonstrated that young, but not old, hamsters showed loss of the circadian wheel-running rhythm (mostly via splitting) in LL, and that young hamsters had longer circadian periods in LL than old animals.
