A considerable amount of research has been directed at understanding the sources of inmate misconduct (offending within prison), whereas few studies have focused on identifying the causes and correlates of prisoner victimization. The sources of inmate victimization should be distinguished from those of offending, however, because the policy implications of each focus differ to some extent. In order to determine the predictors of inmate victimization and stimulate further research on the topic, we systematically reviewed studies of the causes/correlates of prisoner victimization published betwe

Three hundred and seventy-five out of 575 prisoners (222/299 drug users and 153/267 non-users) who responded to a self-completion health care questionnaire at two prisons in 1997 commented on drugs in prisons. One hundred and forty-eight out of 176 responses expressed negative opinions about mandatory drugs testing (MDT), and 107 said that MDT promoted switching to or increased use of heroin/hard drugs'. Sixty-two prisoners suggested that more help/counselling was needed for drug users, 52 segregation of drug users/drug-free wings, and 50 more security on visits/in corridors after medication. …

This study aims to determine whether previous exposure to a total prison smoking ban is associated with a reduction in daily smoking postrel … ily smoking and recent exposure to a prison smoking ban, suggesting that the majority of Australian prisoners exposed to a tobacco ban while incarcerated will return to smoking once released. Complementary and culturally specific interventions supporting abstinence postrelease should be considered.

Prison inmates are highly susceptible for several infectious diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases. We conducted a systematic int … e limit were applied to the search. We defined vaccination coverage as the proportion of vaccinated prisoners. There were no limitations in the search strategy regarding time period or language. Several studies have documented that ex-prisoners are at higher risk of death than the general population but only one study, concerning one single prison, has examined the French case. This study relies on a nationally representative sample of all inmates released from French prisons between June and December 2002. A linkage between two administrative databases makes it possible to study mortality within 5 years after release. The magnitude of ex-prisoners' excess mortality is similar to that observed in other studies. The standardized mortality ratio is 3.6 (95% CI 3.1-4.1). Excess mortality…

Correctional nurses are trained to care for prisoners in a controlled security environment; however, when a convict is transferred to a noncorrectional health care facility, the nurses there are often unfamiliar with custody requirements or how to safely care for these patients. The care of prisoners outside of prison has not been adequately investigated, and a gap exists between research and nursing education and practice. Nurses rarely have to consider how providing care for a prisoner in custody affects their practice, the potential dissonance between routine nursing care and the requiremen…

People in prison may experience barriers in accessing health services. By exploring some of these barriers and how they have been overcome, this article describes how prisoners were made aware of obstructive sleep apnoea and the associated risks, and how a clinic was set up in a prison healthcare centre. It shows how access to a community service was made available to the prisoners, and details how the service was set up, how it operates and what the outcomes achieved.

The United States has experienced dramatic increases in both incarceration rates and the population of insecurely housed or homeless persons since the 1980s. These marginalized populations have strong overlaps, with many people being poor, minority, and from an urban area. That a relationship between homelessness, housing insecurity, and incarceration exists is clear, but the extent and nature of this relationship is not yet adequately understood. We use longitudinal, administrative data on Michigan parolees released in 2003 to examine returning prisoners' experiences with housing insecurity a…

PURPOSE: Indonesian law provides prisoners with basic rights, including access to education, health care and nutrition. The purpose of this paper is to explore their health concerns.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Six prisons and one detention centre were researched, comprising: female prisoners (n=69); clinical officers (six); clinic heads (seven); wardens (seven); heads of prisons (seven); and a Directorate representativ…

Psychiatrists working in prisons are frequently presented with inmate requests for special privileges and living arrangements. Although recommendations to reduce stress are often indicated for seriously mentally ill prisoners, the injudicious use of special privileges can interfere with treatment and with the functioning and security of the prison environment. Guidelines are suggested for evaluating privilege requests that include exploring alternatives to granting requests; reserving privileges primarily for individuals with serious mental disorders; relying upon objective findings; and utili…

PURPOSE: This study aims to analyze prisoners' experiences of prison drug-treatment programs in Sweden. How could differences between these wings be understood?
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The data consist of observations and face-to-face interviews with male and female prisoners in three Swedish prison drug-treatment wings. Analytical concepts used are roles, relationships and rituals.
