Social Robotics in Therapy of Apraxia of Speech.

Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder in which messages from the brain to the mouth are disrupted, resulting in an inability for moving lips or tongue to the right place to pronounce sounds correctly. Current therapies for this condition involve a therapist that in one-on-one sessions conducts the exercises. Our aim is to work in the line of robotic therapies in which a robot is able to perform partially or autonomously a therapy session, endowing a social robot with the ability of assisting therapists in apraxia of speech rehabilitation exercises. Therefore, we integrate computer visio

Robotics in cardiac surgery: past, present, and future.

Robotic cardiac operations evolved from minimally invasive operations and offer similar theoretical benefits, including less pain, shorter length of stay, improved cosmesis, and quicker return to preoperative level of functional activity. The additional benefits offered by robotic surgical systems include improved dexterity and degrees of freedom, tremor-free movements, ambidexterity, and the avoidance of the fulcrum effect that is intrinsic when using long-shaft endoscopic instruments. Also, optics and operative visualization are vastly improved compared with direct vision and traditional vid

Providing physical relief for nurses by collaborative robotics.

Manual patient handling is one of the most significant challenges leading to musculoskeletal burden among healthcare workers. Traditional working techniques could be enhanced by innovations that can be individually adapted to the physical capacity of nurses. We evaluated the use of a robotic system providing physical relief by collaboratively assisting nurses in manual patient handling tasks. By quantifying kinetic and muscle activity data, it was possible to distinguish two kinds of movement patterns. Highly asymmetric postures and movements corresponded to distinct extremes in lower limb and

Biohybrid robotics: From the nanoscale to the macroscale.

Biohybrid robotics is a field in which biological entities are combined with artificial materials in order to obtain improved performance or features that are difficult to mimic with hand-made materials. Three main level of integration can be envisioned depending on the complexity of the biological entity, ranging from the nanoscale to the macroscale. At the nanoscale, enzymes that catalyze biocompatible reactions can be used as power sources for self-propelled nanoparticles of different geometries and compositions, obtaining rather interesting active matter systems that acquire importance in

In vivo robotics for natural orifice transgastric peritoneoscopy.

Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) is potentially the next paradigm shift in minimally invasive surgery. Currently, NOTES procedures are performed using modified endoscopic tools with significant constraints. New tools are necessary that allow the surgeon to better visualize and dexterously manipulate within the surgical environment. In this study, a two-armed dexterous miniature in vivo robot with stereoscopic vision capabilities has been developed that addresses many of these constraints. The design and kinematic configuration of the robot allows for its complete inserti

Leveraging design for collective phototaxis in morphological swarm robotics.

Morphological computing-the use of a robot's physical design to facilitate task execution-has emerged as a promising strategy in swarm robotics. Here, through experiments and simulations, we show that its success critically depends on both the robots' control policy and the details of their physical design. We study a swarm of Kilobots embedded in an exoskeleton whose geometry controls the propensity of robots to align or anti-align with the external force they experience. Experimentally, the contrast between the two morphologies in the success rate of a simple phototactic task becomes dramati

Unsegmented marine annelids as biomechanical models for soft robotics.

This work investigates marine worms as a source of bioinspiration for soft robotics, focusing on Phascolosoma stephensoni (Annelida), an unsegmented sipunculan species with a fully eversible introvert capable of remarkable elongations. High-resolution micro-computed tomography was used to resolve the internal musculoskeletal architecture across functional configurations. Morphometric analyses of live specimens revealed strong differentiation between body regions: trunk length remains nearly constant during motion (7.26 ± 3.40 mm retracted vs. 7.70 ± 3.47 mm extended), whereas total body length
