Skeletal and soft-tissue incidental findings on cone-beam computed tomography images.

Cone-beam computed tomography provides orthodontists with 3-dimensional images of the craniofacial region and valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning of craniofacial or dental anomalies. However, a narrow focus on the skeletal and dental contributions to malocclusion can cause failure to identify skeletal or soft-tissue pathologies of the craniofacial structures unrelated to the orthodontic concerns. Two cases are presented that demonstrate skeletal and soft-tissue anomalies identified as incidental findings on cone-beam computed tomography scans of asymptomatic orthodontics

New observations of soft tissue sarcomas with contrast medium-enhanced computed tomography.

Computed tomography examinations were performed on 74 patients who presented to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a known or suspected diagnosis of primary or secondary soft tissue sarcoma. Focal masses were detected on computed tomography study in 59 patients. These masses were classified into three broad categories: centrally necrotic masses with a large predominantly liquefactive center and higher density periphery (29); multilocular, septated masses with distinct linear bands or striations (21); and miscellaneous masses (9). The

Using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing technology for foreign body removal from soft tissues: a case report.

BACKGROUND: When foreign bodies are located deep within the tissue, removal is often difficult. In recent years, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) has been widely adopted in surgery, including the removal of foreign bodies. Among various techniques, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has been widely employed for hard tissue management in the oral and maxillofacial region, and reports on the application of CAD/CAM technology for procedures involving soft tissues are lacking. In this study, we report a case in which CAD/CAM technology is used to facilitate the

Evaluation of soft tissue balancing and component alignment in computer-navigated TKA for valgus knee.

PURPOSE: Computer-navigated total knee arthroplasty (CN-TKA) is useful for improving the accuracy of osseous cuts, soft tissue balance, and component placement. However, the usefulness of CN-TKA for valgus deformity remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the availability of CN-TKA for valgus deformities and compare it with CN-TKA for varus knees. METHODS: A total of 74 cruciate-retaining CN-TKAs (20 valgus, 54 varus) were included in this study. After implantation, the intraoperative hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle was recorded during full extension and at 30° and 90° of flexion under three c

Incidental findings of soft tissue gas in canine and feline thoracic computed tomographic examinations.

Computed tomography (CT) is a commonly used modality in small animal veterinary medicine. Anecdotally, gas bubbles are frequently identified in small animals undergoing thoracic CT examination. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to record the occurrence and prevalence of vascular and extravascular gas in routine thoracic CT examinations in dogs and cats. Patients with any clinical signs of diseases   related to soft tissue gas were excluded. A total of 84 canine studies and 90 feline studies were included, detecting gas in 66.7% of all studies, with gas more likely to be det

Effect of the calcaneal medializing osteotomy on soft tissues supporting the plantar arch: A computational study.

Medializing calcaneal osteotomy forms part of the treatment options for adult acquired flat foot. The structural correction that is achieved is widely known. However, the effect of this procedure on the soft tissues that support the plantar arch has been little studied, since it is not possible to quantify experimentally the tension and deformation variations generated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of medializing calcaneal osteotomy on the soft tissue that supports the plantar arch, using a computational model of the human foot designed with a clinical appr

A computational modeling approach for investigating soft tissue balancing in bicruciate retaining knee arthroplasty.

Bicruciate retaining knee arthroplasty, although has shown improved functions and patient satisfaction compared to other designs of total knee replacement, remains a technically demanding option for treating severe cases of arthritic knees. One of the main challenges in bicruciate retaining arthroplasty is proper balancing of the soft tissue during the surgery. In this study biomechanics of soft tissue balancing was investigated using a validated computational model of the knee joint with high fidelity definitions of the soft tissue structures along with a Taguchi method for design of experime

Advances in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography for soft tissue sarcomas.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare malignant tumors originating from mesodermal tissues with a poor prognosis, accounting for approximately 1% of all malignancies and comprising around 50 distinct subtypes. Conventional imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), primarily provide anatomical information, whereas 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) integrates functional metabolic and anatomical imaging, serving as a critical complementary tool in the diagnosis and management of STS. This article reviews recent a

Preoperative computed tomography-guided soft hook-wire localization for multiple pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: While there have been prior reports on pulmonary nodule (PN) localization through computed tomography (CT)-guided soft hook-wire (SHW) placement, there remains a dearth of studies specifically focused on the CT-guided SHW localization of multiple PNs. This study was thus designed to specifically evaluate the efficacy and safety of this localization strategy in patients with multiple PNs. METHODS: In total, 43 consecutive patients with multiple PNs underwent CT-guided SHW localization followed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to resent these PNs in our hospital betwee

Computer-controlled motorized endoscopic grasper for in vivo measurement of soft tissue biomechanical characteristics.

Accurate biomechanical characteristics of tissues are essential for developing realistic virtual reality surgical simulators utilizing haptic devices. Surgical simulation technology has progressed rapidly but without a large database of soft tissue mechanical properties with which to incorporate. The device described here is a computer-controlled, motorized endoscopic grasper capable of applying surgically relevant levels of force to tissue in vivo and measuring the tissue's force-deformation properties.
