Birthweight and thinness at birth independently predict symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is unknown and contested. While it has been suggested that PCOS could have ori … : These results suggest two discrete fetal programming pathways (related to high birthweight and to thinness at birth) are operating. Our findings point to differing aetiologies for symptom clusters, and inform the debate over symptoms that best represent the disorder.

Body dissatisfaction, bulimia, and depression among women: the mediating role of drive for thinness.

OBJECTIVE: Past research has called into question the apparent relationship between body dissatisfaction and bulimia among women once effects of depression are statistically controlled. We further investigated interrelations among body dissatisfaction, depression, and bulimia, as well as considered individual differences in drive for thinness, within two samples of young adult women. METHOD: The first sample included women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (n = 91) or bulimia nervosa (n = 142), whereas the second sample included college student women (N = 228). Respondents completed self-report…

Perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and health-thinness-cleanliness motivations as primary correlates of orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with eating foods perceived as healthy or clean. Despite gro … trol, perceived vulnerability to disease, past eating disorder diagnosis), and dietary motivations (thinness, health, cleanliness, muscularity, feeling mentally well). RESULTS: Three dietary motivations: desires to be thin, healthy, and clean were significantly associated with ON symptoms across both measures. Perfectionism (specifically perfectionistic s …

Do risk factors differentiate DSM-5 and drive for thinness severity groups for anorexia nervosa?

BACKGROUND: The current study examined whether risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN) were related to different levels of severity based on (a) the DSM-5/body mass index (BMI) and (b) drive for thinness (DT) severity ratings. METHODS: The sample comprised 153 pairs of individuals with a lifetime diagnosis AN per DSM-IV criteria and their non-ED sisters (N = 306, mean age = 26.53; mean current BMI = 20.42 kg/m2). The Oxford risk factor interview was used to establish AN-related risk factors. Individuals were categorised into the DSM-5 severity groups based on their lowest BMI, while the DT sub…

Association of gut-specific non-inflammatory T lymphocytes with chronic anorexia nervosa and constitutional thinness.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of AN showed low-grade inflammation. Are low-grade inflammation and circulating lymphocytes associated with chronic conditions? METHOD: Peripheric blood cytokines were measured using Luminex™ technology in a chronic AN cohort (mean = 67.42 months), compared to Constitutional Thinness (CT), Constitutional Obesity (CO), and Healthy Controls (HC). Secondarily a prospective cohort of chronic AN (mean = 54.11 months) was recruited to compare the functional lymphocyte profile in blood by flow cytometry to CT and HC. RESULTS: In the AN group, most cytokine concentrations…

Expectancies related to thinness, dietary restriction, eating, and alcohol consumption in women with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate behavior-outcome expectancies relating to thinness, dietary restriction, eating, and alcohol consumption in women with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Women with BN (N = 29), women with BN and a co-morbid lifetime alcohol use disorder (AUD; N = 18), and control women (N = 24), completed interviews and questionnaires assessing eating- and alcohol-related symptoms, as well as questionnaires measuring expectancies relating to thinness, dietary restriction, eating, and alcohol consumption. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, both bulimic groups reported greater posi…

Desire for thinness among high school cheerleaders: relationship to disordered eating and weight control behaviors.

The eating disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia are increasing in frequency among adolescent females. These increases have been linked to the cultural ideal in American society of thinness. Attempting to control weight is one behavioral manifestation of the desire for thinness. One particular group of adolescents, female cheerleaders, often experience pressure to attain and maintain weight that is lower than other adolescents of the same height. This study examined cheerleaders' desire for thinness in relationship to disordered eating and weight control behaviors. A Desire for Thinness Sc…

Walking a thin line: Thinning broiler houses with Salmonella contaminated material.

Salmonella Infantis and Salmonella Paratyphi B var. Java are important human pathogens that are mainly found on chicken meat and derivative products. Furthermore, both serovars are dominantly present in the Belgian broiler sector. In search of contamination routes in the sector, equipment used during partial depopulation or thinning was sampled at ten different broiler farms. All thinning materials, such as the trucks, crates and workwear of the catching crew were sampled before entering the broiler houses. To evaluate if the remaining birds became colonized by Salmonella strains introduced du

Idiopathic calvarial thinning.

An 82-year-old diabetic female had been aware of gradually enlarging, painless scalp depressions in the bilateral parietal regions for more than 6 years. She had no history of head injury, or inflammatory or malignant disease. Her family history was unremarkable for hereditary bone disease. She had diabetes mellitus which had been well controlled with orally administered drugs. Blood examination showed normal renal and liver functions with normal serum calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus concentrations, in addition to normal parathyroid hormone and calcitonin levels. Neuroimaging including skul

The fat and thin of lipin.

Mutations in the Lpin1 gene (encoding lipin) cause the lipodystrophy (adipose tissue deficiency) of the fld mouse, but the underlying mechanism has been unclear. In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Phan and Reue (2005) show that overexpression of lipin in either muscle or adipose tissue increases adiposity. Interestingly, mice overexpressing lipin in muscle are insulin resistant, while those overexpressing lipin in adipose tissue are insulin sensitive.

Transactions among thinness expectancies, depression, and binge eating in the prediction of adolescent weight control behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating, the transdiagnostic risk associated with depression, and the eating disorder-specific risk associated with expectancies for reinforcement from thinness have been identified as risk factors for the development of weight control behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine if these risk factors transact to further predict risk in youth. METHOD: Binge eating, depressive symptoms, thinness expectancies, and weight control behaviors were assessed in 1,758 adolescents three times during the transitional period between middle school and high school. We tested six diff…

The Transition From Thinness-Oriented to Muscularity-Oriented Disordered Eating in Adolescent Males: A Clinical Observation.

PURPOSE: Robust empirical evidence has illustrated a rising prevalence of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating among males, noting that both may be oriented more toward muscularity-as opposed to thinness-oriented concerns. While an elevated prevalence of premorbid anorexia nervosa (AN) has been noted among those with muscle dysmorphia, little evidence has examined the process of this transition from thinness-oriented to muscularity-oriented disordered eating. METHODS: This clinical observation presents a case of AN in an adolescent male, whose symptom presentation transitioned during th…

The use of the Nabarro Thinness Chart in identifying children for nutrition supplementation in Sri Lanka.

This study compares the use of the Nabarro Thinness Chart with other nutritional screening tools among school children in Sri Lanka. It concludes that this method is a simpler, more precise approach to assess students requiring food supplementation in community programmes than others which are commonly utilized.
