Two cases of persistent falcine and occipital sinuses.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of falcine and occipital sinuses is rare and its natural course has not been reported. CASE REPORTS: Two patients with persistent falcine and occipital sinuses are described. Both patients had straight sinuses. In one, both the transverse and sigmoid sinuses were hypoplastic and the patient had an acquired Chiari I malformation. The other patient had no other venous anomalies and had a normal posterior cranial fossa. CONCLUSION: The coexistence of falcine and occipital sinuses can lead to an acquired Chiari I malformation. These cases suggest the importance of che

Anatomy of the paranasal sinuses of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus Linnaeus, 1758) and radiographic positioning for diagnosis of these structures.

BACKGROUND: Callithrix jacchus, it is a species highly targeted by wild animal traffickers and, when apprehended, they need veterinary care. For safe therapeutic procedures, knowledge of anatomy is essential, as well as for diagnostic by imaging, good radiographic positioning is essential. METHODS: The anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and the radiographic projections was described using 10 carcasses of common marmosets. Radiographs were taken in two panoramic views of their head: profile and frontal-naso. For the anatomical study, paramedian and transverse macroscopic sections and microscopic

Alteration of major venous drainage routes in a patient with achondroplasia after ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement.

Achondroplasia is the most common form of dwarfism, caused by a mutation in fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene, leading to multiple pathological conditions. Herein, we present a case of an infant with achondroplasia associated with hydrocephalus and severe foramen magnum stenosis. Computed tomography (CT) venography showed prominent suboccipital emissary veins comprising major venous drainage routes and hypoplastic transverse sinuses, which increased the risk of foramen magnum decompression. The infant was initially treated with ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt. After 8 months, CT venogr…

[Transverse Sinus / Sigmoid Sinus].

The transverse sinus(TS)and sigmoid sinus(SS)are common sites for dural arteriovenous fistulas, and an understanding of vascular anatomy is important when developing treatment strategies. In recent years, transarterial embolization, with a liquid embolization material, has become the treatment of choice, preserving the sinus without extensive coil filling of the affected sinus. With this expansion of therapeutic options, we feel that an understanding of the microanatomy has become more important. For example, the exact site where the vein of Labbé joins the TS should be determined. This articl

Revisiting the Tentorial Venous Sinuses: Anatomical and Histological Study.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical studies of the tentorial sinuses (TS) are scant, and to our knowledge, histological studies of this structure have no … or tentorial bridging veins drained directly into the TS along with connections to the straight and transverse sinuses. In 53.3% of specimens, superficial and deep sinuses were seen, with superior and inferior groups draining the cerebrum and cerebellum, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We identified novel findings for the TS which can be considered surgically and when d …

Major complications of dural venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension: case series and management considerations.

BACKGROUND: Venous sinus stenting (VSS) is a safe, effective, and increasingly popular treatment option for selected patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Serious complications associated with VSS are rarely reported. METHODS: Serious complications after VSS were identified retrospectively from multicenter databases. The cases are presented and management strategies are discussed. RESULTS: Six major acute and chronic complications after VSS were selected from a total of 811 VSS procedures and 1466 venograms for IIH. These included an acute subdural hematoma from venous ex

Reconstructive treatment using stent placement for type IIa+b lateral sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas complicated with sinus occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Cognard type IIa+b dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) in the lateral sinuses are often complicated with venous sinus obstruction and accompanied by clinical symptoms and a risk of hemorrhage. The purpose of this study was to assess venous sinus stenting as a viable alternative treatment in complex lateral sinus DAVFs and examine its efficacy and safety. METHODS: We retrospectively examined patients diagnosed with type IIa+b DAVF in the transverse or sigmoid sinus with associated venous sinus occlusion who were treated via stent placement between April 2017 and June 2019. Unilateral papilledema: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is caused by an elevation of intracranial pressure and can present with slowly progressive … hypertension, characterized by flattening of the posterior globes and narrowing of bilateral distal transverse sinuses. Increased intracranial pressure was confirmed by lumbar puncture. Acetazolamide and weight loss yielded initial improvement, but recurrence prompted cerebral arteriography, revealing a transstenotic gradient in the right distal transverse sinus and …

Lymphatic Vessels Accompanying Dorsal and Basal Dural Sinuses in the Human Brain.

Recent investigations showed the presence of meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) along the superior sagittal and transverse dural sinuses which drain both fluid and immune cells from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to the deep cervical lymph nodes. This study uses immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the Western Blot technique to show the presence of mLV accompanying the dorsal (superior sagittal, inferior sagittal, transverse, sigmoid, and straight) and basal (cavernous, sphenoparietal, superior, and inferior petrosal) dural sinuses in the human brain. Samples for IHC were obtained from dorsal and bas

Transarterial Onyx Embolization of Bilateral Transverse-Sigmoid Dural Arteriovenous Malformation with Transvenous Balloon Assist-Initial U.S. Experience with Copernic RC Venous Remodeling Balloon.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the mainstay treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) involves endovascular approaches, especially for high-grade lesions. Transarterial embolization with preservation of venous sinuses has become the preferred approach due to the development of newer liquid embolic agents. For further precision during embolization, the use of temporary balloon occlusion to protect the patency of dural sinuses from the embolic agent's migration has been described. METHODS: A 64-year-old man presented with bilateral pulsatile tinnitus and visual decline. A diagnostic cerebral angi

Dorsal cyst malformations. Part II. Galenic dysgenesis and its embryological considerations.

In the preceding part, galenic dysgenesis was stated to be a diagnostic hallmark of dorsal cyst malformations. Failed formation of the galenic drainage system conducts the diencephalic drainage laterally into the transverse sinuses as in the embryonal stage, and it is frequently associated with arrested descent of the torcular portion or other anomalies of the dural sinuses. Highly malformed structures of the deep cerebral veins and the dural sinuses seen in this malformation are correctly interpreted in comparison with findings of venous injection studies performed in human fetuses. Pathogene…

Reconstruction of vein of Labbé in temporo-occipital meningioma invading transverse sinus: technical report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Meningiomas invading major venous sinuses and veins are not uncommon. However, meningiomas involving both the transverse sinus and vein of Labbé are exceedingly rare. Venous reconstruction can be challenging after radical removal of the meningioma which invades major venous sinuses and veins. In this report, we present reconstruction of vein of Labbé in the surgery of temporo-occipital meningioma invading the transverse sinus. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman was admitted to our institution with a 13-year history of focal epilepsy in the form of transient a

The Relationships between Asterion, the Transverse-Sigmoid Junction, the Superior Nuchal Line and the Transverse Sinus in Thai Cadavers: Surgical Relevance.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical localization of the venous sinuses in the posterior cranial fossa is important to preventing inadvertent venous sinus injury during surgical approaches to the area. Identification of surface landmarks related to these structures is useful in planning such approaches. OBJECTIVE: To identify the positions of the asterion and the superior nuchal line for localization of the venous sinus in the posterior fossa. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Twenty fresh cadaveric heads, yielding 40 sides, were used. The vessels were injected with colored silicone. The soft tissues were removed to e

A hypothesis of traumatic subdural effusion associated with communicating hydrocephalus in infants and its management.

We report a case with both traumatic subdural effusion (TSE) and associated hydrocephalus. A collapse of the sinuses is known to be present in some infants with external hydrocephalus, but collapsed sinuses have not been previously described in patients with TSE and associated hydrocephalus. Therefore, a preoperative magnetic resonance imaging venography was performed, with thrombosis in the left transverse and sigmoid sinuses identified. The infant was treated with subdural peritoneostomy. We hypothesized that an occlusive cerebral venous sinus thrombosis may well be the culprit, or an exacer
