A 31 year old woman who developed an atypical ventricular tachycardia after administration of intravenous verapamil for control of a recurrent supraventricular tachycardia is presented. Possible explanations for the observed arrhythmia, polymorphous ventricular tachycardia, are discussed. Verapamil must be considered one of the pharmacologic agents that can cause this arrhythmia.

The use of intravenous verapamil for tachyarrhythmia in infants is widely considered contraindicated due to the perceived risk of hemodynamic collapse after administration. This article reviews the relatively limited evidence that led to this well-known contraindication and highlights the interesting process by which medical practice may evolve in the absence of persuasive science.

We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of verapamil HCl in the prophylaxis of chronic migraine headaches. Verapamil significantly reduced both headache frequency and duration with few side effects. The drug may be useful for a segment of the migraine population refractory to other prophylactic agents or for those who cannot tolerate the side effects of other drugs.

The concentration of verapamil in milk and serum was determined in samples taken within the same hour 3-5 days after delivery of a 25 year old women treated with verapamil (Isoptin) 240 mg daily for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. The average concentration of verapamil in milk was found to be 23% of that in serum, and the total excretion in milk was less than 0,01% of the administered dose.
