Descemet's Stripping-Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty for Traumatic Aniridia and Aphakia.

This Interventional case reports a challenging case of descemet's stripping-automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in a young male patient with traumatic aniridia, aphakia, and corneal edema. Surgery was planned in two stages; first was implantation of aniridia intraocular lens (AIOL), few months later, DSAEK procedure was performed. Successful outcome of both procedures was achieved as measured by the stability of the AIOL, clarity of the cornea, attachment of the lenticule, and improvement in vision. Aniridia implant supports a sufficient amount of air in the anterior chamber especially …

Schematic eye predictions of relative spectacle magnification in unilateral aphakia.

Computer ray tracing provides a simple technique for investigating binocular relative spectacle magnification (BRSM) in the patient with unilateral aphakia. BRSM is defined as the retinal image size in the corrected aphakic eye relative to the retinal image size in the corrected phakic eye. The influence of preoperative ametropia and the mode of correction on BRSM is investigated, using Gullstrand's number 2 schematic eye as a model.

Unilateral traumatic aphakia in children: role of corneal contact lenses.

Twenty-eight children below ten years of age with unilateral traumatic aphakia were fitted with hard corneal contact lenses. Visual acuity of 6/12 or better was achieved in 68% of the cases. Patients who were above seven years of age at the time of injury, and those fitted with contact lenses within eight months of trauma, were found to have better chances of recovering normal binocular functions.

Clinical experience with continuous-wear hydrophilic contact lenses in aphakia.

Twenty-two aphakic eyes in seven females and thirteen males were fitted with a new type of soft contact lens designed for continuous wear. Nine patients were operated on for unilateral traumatic cataract, and eleven patients were operated on for senile cataract. Sixteen patients terminated the study. In all cases the visual acuity with lens was almost equal to the acuity obtained with spectacles. The lenses were well tolerated without any special wearing schedule. No serious complications occurred. However, about one third of the patients developed conjunctivitis during the investigation perio

[Unilateral aphakia in juveniles. Results of combined correction (author's transl)].

Eighty-one unilateral aphakies under 45 years of age, 63 of which had suffered an injury, were analyzed by echometry and intraocular optics. With the aid of a computer, the majority of cases were treated for restoration of nearly equal images in both eyes by combined correction, i.e., an appropriate spectacle -- contact lens combination with both distant and near vision in the aphakie eye taken into consideration. Results with unilateral post-traumatic aphakia (63 cases) : 31 patients with uncorrected vision and 42 with a conventional contact lens suffered from symptoms of binocular confusion …

[Intra-ocular optics and contact lens correction in unilateral aphakia].

After an explanation of intra-ocular optics, the first results of combined contact lens correction in 42 patients are reported. As opposed to the conventional type of contact lens treatment in monolateral aphakia, this method has four main advantages: 1. It enables practically identical sight in both eyes, thus providing the necessary conditions for binocular vision both at a distance and close-up. 2. The recovery of sensomotor haptics in both eyes prevents squinting, even in the case of incipient cataract of the other eye. 3. Premature lens extraction in the second eye can be postponed and de…

Congenital Aphakia Associated With a GJA8 Pathogenic Variant: A Case Report.

Congenital aphakia is a rare eye condition in which the lens fails to form properly. It is typically caused by pathogenic variants within the FOXE3 or HCCS genes; however, it can also be associated with GJA8 pathogenic variants. GJA8 should be included in the genetic testing of patients with this condition.

Surgical Management of Paediatric Aphakia in the Absence of Sufficient Capsular Support.

There are several available options for the demanding surgical correction of paediatric aphakia without sufficient capsular support. The literature suggests the implantation of a transscleral fixated posterior chamber-intraocular lens (PCIOL), an intrascleral fixated PCIOL, an iris-sutured intraocular lens (IOL), or an anterior chamber iris-claw IOL. We searched for reports on the management of paediatric aphakia in case of inadequate capsular support that delineated the diverse surgical approaches and their postoperative results. Analysis demonstrated that different complications can be encou…

[Intraocular correction of aphakia after cataract extraction for uveitis in adolescents].

PURPOSE: To demonstrate 3 cases with pediatric pseudophakia after cataract extraction as a complication of unilateral uveitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The boys were at the age of 8, 11 and 15 years at the moment of surgery. Uveitis was monocular, the etiology unknown and clinically significant cataract was diagnosed after several months from the beginning of inflammation. The last recurrence of uveitis was observed 1 to 6 months before operation. There were intermediate uveitis (2 cases) and anterior uveitis (1 cases). In 2 eyes PMMA implant was placed in-the-bag and in one eye in the ciliary s

Epikeratophakia, a valid surgical alternative for the treatment of selected patients with aphakia.

Epikeratophakia is a safe and valid surgical alternative for the correction of aphakia if spectacles or contact lenses are not tolerated and if ocular lens implantation is contraindicated. This report reviews our experience with 36 epikeratophakia procedures using lyophilized lenticules, with a mean follow-up of 19 months.

Ocular axial length changes in a pediatric patient with aphakia and pseudophakia.

Excessive eye elongation can be induced in experimental animals by visual deprivation. A tendency toward myopic refraction or shift in pediatric aphakia has been recorded in some children. In this report, we present the case of an 18-year-old patient who had developmental cataracts treated at seven years of age with bilateral cataract extraction and implantation of an intraocular lens in one eye only. Axial length of the eye with a contact lens increased compared with the eye with the intraocular lens.

Diffractive bifocal contact lenses in aphakia and pseudophakia. A pilot study.

Diffractive bifocal contact lenses function by diverting incident light to two focal points. Light from near objects is focused by diffraction while that from distant objects is focused by conventional refraction. Both processes occur simultaneously throughout the full aperture of the lens. Fourteen aphakic and pseudophakic contact lens wearers were fitted with diffractive bifocal lenses and observed for an eight week period. Six (42.8%) were satisfied with the visual result. Five subjects (35.7%) discontinued lens wear complaining of poor quality of near vision. We conclude that these lenses

[The first results of the contact lens correction of aphakia in young infants].

Soft contact lenses (SCL) were used for the correction of aphakia in young children. Eleven surgeries were carried out in 7 children with congenital cataracts (aspiration in 2 cases and transciliary lensectomy in the rest). SCLs were made individually of gel with 70% water content by mechanical treatment, their parameters differing from the commercial 'aphakic' lenses. These SCL parameters were chosen with consideration for the data of measurements of the corneal curvature and diameter, carried out during surgery and then specified by trials. To determine the optic force of SCL, a special form…
