Regional cerebral blood volume after severe head injury in patients with regional cerebral ischemia.

OBJECTIVE: Recent early cerebral blood flow (CBF) studies in cases of severe head injury have revealed ischemia in a substantial number of patients with a variety of computed tomographically demonstrated diagnoses. The underlying derangements causing this early ischemia are unknown, but cerebral blood volume (CBV) measurements might offer some insight into this pathological abnormality. METHODS: For this purpose, stable xenon-enhanced computed tomography was used for assessment of CBF, and a dynamic computed tomographic imaging technique was used for determining CBV. Based on the occurrence o…

SPECT measurements of cerebral blood volume before and after acetazolamide in occlusive cerebrovascular diseases.

Cerebral blood volume before and after acetazolamide was measured by SPECT to evaluate cerebral vasodilatory capacity in eight patients with cerebrovascular disease and five control subjects. Two SPECT measurements were performed serially, and acetazolamide was administered between them. The ratio of increase in hemispheric blood volume was calculated, and it was compared with the results of cerebral blood flow and cerebral blood volume measurements. A cerebral vasodilatory capacity map, the image after acetazolamide minus the baseline image, was also produced. Acetazolamide increased hemisphe…

Local blood volume changes in women with pelvic congestion measured by applied potential tomography.

1. Applied potential tomography is a new, non-invasive technology for observing changes in blood volume. We have used it to study 12 women with lower abdominal pain caused by pelvic congestion, and 15 control subjects. 2. A significant increase in blood volume of 1.8% was observed in the pelvis of women with congestion when changing from the supine to the erect position, and of 2.7% in the control subjects (P less than 0.0002). The difference between the groups was not significant. 3. The distribution of the area over which blood volume changes took place was significantly different between th…

Atrial natriuretic peptide, volume and blood pressure regulation during exchange transfusion of the neonates.

Plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and hemodynamic parameters were investigated in five premature infants undergoing exchange transfusion. Baseline values of ANP were elevated being 51.7 +/- 21.2 fmol/ml. Volume depletion by withdrawal of 10 ml blood did not cause changes in systolic blood pressure (79.4 +/- 4.3 vs 71.4 +/- 5.6 mmHg) and heart rate (115 +/- 5.2 vs 115 +/- 2.4 l/min). ANP levels in plasma remained unaltered (53.4 +/- 24.9 fmol/ml). Volume load of 10 ml blood transfusion increased central venous pressure by 33 per cent and ANP concentration in the plasma n

Effects of central venous blood volume shifts on arterial baroreflex control of heart rate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of anesthesia, body position, and blood volume expansion on baroreflex control of heart rate. Five male rhesus monkeys (7.0-10.5 kg) were given bolus injection of 4.0 micrograms/kg phenylephrine during each of the following situations: awake sitting, anesthetized (AN) (10 mg/kg ketamine-HCl) sitting, AN recumbent, AN 90 degrees head down tilt, and AN 50% blood volume expansion with normal saline. beta-Receptor blockade was also performed on each treatment after anesthesia. Four additional animals were similarly treated after 20% blood vo…

Continuous monitoring of relative blood volume allows real-time assessment of intradialytic hypotension risk.

BACKGROUND: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a frequent complication of hemodialysis, associated with patient discomfort, end-organ injury, and higher mortality. Prediction remains challenging. The value of relative blood volume (RBV) monitoring is debated. We investigated whether RBV indicates IDH risk and enables real-time prediction. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter study, 56 patients across 459 hemodialysis sessions were monitored with RBV sensors. IDH was defined as a systolic blood pressure <90 mmHg with a ≥20 mmHg decrease from baseline. RBV trajectories were analyzed using …

Longitudinal Placental Blood Volume Measurements in Zika-Infected Rhesus Macaques Using Ferumoxytol Enhanced MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Measures of maternal fractional blood volume (mFBV) in the placenta holds potential to diagnose placental vasculature deficiencies. However, methods for quantitative mapping of blood volume are challenging to implement for clinical placenta evaluation. As a preliminary step towards human applications, this study assesses the feasibility of blood volume measurements using ferumoxytol enhanced variable flip angle (VFA) T1-mapping in Zika-infected rhesus macaques. METHODS: Seven pregnant rhesus macaques were imaged longitudinally at up to 3 timepoints across gestation (days 64.5±1.…

Impact of Volume Control Biosensors on Blood Pressure During Haemodialysis: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Background: Intradialytic hypotension is a common complication in haemodialysis, affecting up to 30% of sessions. It results from an imbalance between ultrafiltration and compensatory mechanisms, such as vascular tone and plasma refilling. Volume-controlled biosensors allow for the continuous monitoring of the haemoconcentration, enabling early detection and prevention of hypotension. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of biosensors in reducing hypotensive episodes. Two biosensors were compared: the Blood Volume Monitor and the Haemomaster system. Dat…

Multiscale Coronary Arterial Network Generation and Hemodynamics Using Patient-Specific Fractional Myocardial Blood Volume.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Although 90% of the intramyocardial blood volume resides in the microvasculature, clinical imaging methods cannot visualize the microvascular coronary network in vivo, and non-invasive hemodynamic estimates overlook patient-specific microcirculatory contributions. Herein, we present a multiscale framework to extend the epicardial coronary tree and generate 1D microvascular networks in the myocardium based on ferumoxytol-enhanced magnetic resonance coronary imaging and fractional myocardial blood volume (fMBV) maps. Synthetic…

Venous Hematocrit: Caveats to Informing Blood Volume and Relative Risk in Chronic Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Venous hematocrit (vHct) is commonly used to inform blood volume (BV) status and stratify cardiovascular risk. However, vHct defines a percentage of red blood cells (RBCs) to total BV; therefore, similar vHcts can reflect significantly different absolute BVs and RBC mass/plasma volume profiles. This analysis explores how quantitative measures of BV enhance vHct reliability as a biomarker in heart failure. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was undertaken in 395 patients stratified by vHcts reflecting clinically heart failure-relevant cut points (35% and 40%). BV was quantitated by …

Low-volume Plasmodium blood sample processing protocols for untargeted transcriptomics optimized using Plasmodium knowlesi.

As the importance of transcriptional variation and regulation for Plasmodium becomes more apparent, advances for non-falciparum species are hindered by our reliance on natural infections to study parasite biology. Untargeted transcriptomic research is also complicated by low-parasite densities and high proportions of human genetic material, highlighting the need for optimized sample processing protocols. In this study, we used a Plasmodium knowlesi culture diluted in whole blood as a mock Plasmodium vivax natural infection to compare white blood cell (WBC), rRNA and globin depletion methods an

Blood volume deficit in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome assessed by semiautomated carbon monoxide rebreathing.

PURPOSE: The semiautomated carbon monoxide (CO) rebreathing method has been introduced as a noninvasive and radiation-free blood volume estimation method. We tested whether the semiautomated CO rebreathing method can detect the blood volume deficit in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In addition, we explored the relationship between blood volume estimated from CO rebreathing and body impedance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 53 subjects (21 female patients with POTS, 19 healthy female participants, and 13 healthy male participants) to record blood volumes and hemodynamic …

Maternal body weight and estimated circulating blood volume: a review and practical nonlinear approach.

Postpartum haemorrhage continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the obstetric population worldwide, especially in patients at extremes of body weight. Quantification of blood loss has been considered extensively in the literature. However, these volumes must be contextualised to appreciate the consequences of blood loss for individual parturients. Knowledge of a patient's peripartum circulating blood volume is essential to allow accurate interpretation of the significance of haemorrhage and appropriate resuscitation. Greater body weight in obesity can lead to overestimatio…

Cannula Tip With Integrated Volume Sensor for Rotary Blood Pump Control: Early-Stage Development.

The lack of direct measurement of left ventricular unloading is a significant impediment to the development of an automatic speed control system for continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (cf-LVADs). We have developed an inlet cannula tip for cf-LVADs with integrated electrodes for volume sensing based on conductance. Four platinum-iridium ring electrodes were installed into grooves on a cannula body constructed from polyetheretherketone (PEEK). A sinusoidal current excitation waveform (250 μA pk-pk, 50 kHz) was applied across one pair of electrodes, and the conductance-dependent volt
