PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to show the first reported case of a cerebral arteriovenous fistula (CAVF) from the anterior choroidal artery (AChoA) to the basal vein of Rosenthal in a Child.
CASE REPORT: A 4-month-old male infant with no previous history presented a left thalamic intraparenchymal hemorrhage with secondary intraventricular spread and hydrocephalus. An external ventricular drainage was placed, and a digital subtracted angiography showed a left single hole CAVF. The left AChoA was the single arterial feeder directly connected to the ipsilateral basal vein of Rosenthal.

After having studied medicine in Vienna and worked in Graz, Greifswald and Königsberg, Erwin Payr, born February 17, 1871 in Vienna, led the Department of Surgery for nearly twenty-five years at the University of Leipzig. Under his leadership a private surgical clinic was founded, the present-day Clinic for Neurosurgery at the University of Leipzig. His surgical innovations include, among others, a new technique in the draining of brain abscesses through the use of elderberry stem capillaries, in the employment of absorbable magnesium threads for vascular and nerve sutures, as well as in the a

To describe the setting, feasibility, and safety of static cerebral autoregulation testing in critically injured adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: We reviewed static autoregulation testing using transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound in patients > 18 years with TBI ICD codes between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2021. Adverse events during testing were defined as systemic hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP>180 mmHg), bradycardia (HR<40 bpm), and high ICP (>30 mmHg). Impaired and absent cerebral autoregulation was defined as an autoregulatory index (ARI) <0.4 and AR

The number of patients with Alzheimer's disease is increasing year by year, but only a few medications are available. We found that OAB-14, a new small molecule, can improve cognitive deficits in various mouse AD models. The structure and mechanism of OAB-14 are distinct from anti-AD medications that have been unsuccessful in recent clinical trials. OAB-14 can effectively reduce the accumulation of Aβ in the brain, but has no inhibitory effect on Aβ production enzymes. Reportedly, Aβ can be drained into the systemic circulation to be metabolized through the glymphatic system and meningeal lymp

INTRODUCTION: Brain abscesses occur in 5 to 13 % of patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM), more often present in Rendu-Osler-Weber disease or hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT).
CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old man with a history of transient Parinaud syndrome at 37 years complained of headache for 2 months before acute onset of a left cerebellar syndrome without fever. CT-scan and MRI of the head revealed a heterogeneous left cerebellar lesion. A brain abscess was drained and all signs resolved. CT-scan of the chest revealed a left lingual PAVM; occlusion was incomplet

BACKGROUND: Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) with spinal perimedullary venous drainage are rarely reported, but most of the patients initially have presented with myelopathy or subarachnoid hemorrhage. This is the first report of the intracranial dural AVF patient who presented with brain stem infarction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old woman experienced nausea and vomiting with an acute onset, followed by vertigo. Magnetic resonance imaging showed ischemic lesion in the medulla oblongata, and she was then sent to our hospital. On admission, she had nystagmus, swallowing diffi

Transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS) has been used to investigate major brain-supplying arteries, draining veins and brain parenchyma. Here, we describe a contrast-enhanced TCCS analysis of cerebral arteriovenous transit time (cTT) as a measure of cerebral microcirculation. We evaluate its reproducibility and its correlation with clinical impairment of brain function and neuropsychological tests. A total of 27 patients with cerebral microangiopathy and 30 healthy controls were examined. CTT is defined by the time an ultrasound contrast agent requires to pass from the P2-segment of the po

UNLABELLED: Pyogenic ventriculitis is defined as the inflammation of the ependymal lining of the cerebral ventricular system. It is characterized by the presence of suppurative fluid in the ventricles. It mostly affects neonates and children but rarely can be seen in adult population. In adults, it usually affects the elderly population. It is usually healthcare associated and occurs secondary to ventriculoperitoneal shunt, external ventricular drain, intrathecal drug delivery, brain stimulation devices, and neurosurgical intervention. Primary pyogenic ventriculitis though rare should be consi

In most cases of pituitary cyst there are no clinical symptoms and the lesions are found incidentally. The authors report the case of a 60-year-old man with a pituitary cyst causing visual disturbance and hyponatremia. The patient presented with appetite loss and general fatigue. On admission, blood workup showed severe hyponatremia (112 mEq/L), and bitemporal hemianopsia was observed on neurological examination. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intra- and suprasellar region cystic mass extending to the frontal base and hypothalamic area. The serum level of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP

The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1 mediates several forms of experimentally induced acute brain injury and has been implicated in chronic neurodegenerative disorders. The IL-1 receptor antagonist, IL-1RA, protects rodents against ischaemic brain injury, but its molecular mass (17 kDa) potentially limits the brain penetration of peripherally administered IL-1RA. We therefore sought to identify whether therapeutically effective concentrations of IL-1RA in the rat were also achieved in brain of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), using a peripheral administration regime tha

Medulloblastoma is the most common paediatric tumour presenting in the posterior fossa. Typically, they are found midline and intra-axially located. Medulloblastomas presenting in an extra-axial location, however, are rare, and of those, they are usually found in the cerebellopontine angle. We present a case of an extra-axial medulloblastoma projecting from the lateral cerebellar hemisphere. As far as we know, there have only been two other cases of a paediatric extra-axial medulloblastoma in the cerebellar hemisphere reported in the literature. After initial medical stabilisation and insertio

The widespread use of cyanide (CN-) in industry results in contamination of various effluents such as drain, lake, and tap water, an imminent danger to the environment and human health. We prepared naphthoquinolinedione (cyclized; 1-5) and anthracenedione (un-cyclized) probes (6-7) for selective detection of CN-. The addition of CN- to the probe solutions (1-5) resulted in a color change from pale green to orange under 365 nm illumination. The nucleophilic addition of CN- to C2 of the imidazolium ring of the probes is responsible for selective CN- detection. Among all probes, 1 gave the lowest

BACKGROUND: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a benign vascular lesion that is uncommon in the central nervous system. To our knowledge, there has been only one previous report of occurrence in the pineal region. We present a second case and a review of the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28-year-old woman presented with 1 month of headaches and visual auras. Brain magnetic resonance imaging scan demonstrated a 2.6- × 1.8- × 1.3-cm nonenhancing T1-hypointense, T2-/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery-hyperintense pineal region mass with cerebral aqueduct obstruction and

Traumatic injuries of the carotid artery may result in severe morbidity and mortality. The most common location of carotid artery injury is the cavernous segment, which may result in fistulous connection to the cavernous sinus and ophthalmic veins, which in turn lead to pressure symptoms in the ipsilateral orbit. Unlike the commonly reported direct traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula, we describe an unusual case of a 38-year-old man presented with a traumatic brain injury led to a fistula connection between the cavernous carotid artery and the ipsilateral basal vein of Rosenthal, with eventual
