Motion capture data of six jump-landings, fatigued and non-fatigued, after anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common, and re-injuries remain high despite advances in rehabilitation. Return-to-sport (RTS) assessments focus on strength, clinical and hop tests, and time-based criteria but often exclude objective movement quality measures. Biomechanical deficits during jump-landings can persist post-reconstruction, contributing to re-injury risk. Fatigue further alters neuromuscular control, potentially exacerbating risk-related movement patterns, yet most RTS tests are conducted in non-fatigued states. This study introduces a motion dataset of 2199 trials acr…

Unraveling the fatigue puzzle: insights into the pathogenesis and management of IBD-related fatigue including the role of the gut-brain axis.

A significant percentage of patients with an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encounter fatigue which can profoundly diminish patients' quality of life, particularly during periods of disease remission when gastrointestinal symptoms have receded. Various contributing risk factors have been identified including active inflammation, anemia, psychological, lifestyle and drug-related factors. While addressing these risk factors has been suggested as the initial approach to managing fatigue, a considerable number of patients still experience persisting symptoms, the primary causes of which remain i…

Fatigued but not sleepy? An empirical investigation of the differentiation between fatigue and sleepiness in sleep disorder patients in a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Sleepiness and fatigue are common complaints among individuals with sleep disorders. The two concepts are often used interchangeably, causing difficulty with differential diagnosis and treatment decisions. The current study investigated sleep disorder patients to determine which factors best differentiated sleepiness from fatigue. METHODS: The study used a subset of participants from a multi-site study (n = 606), using a cross-sectional study design. We selected 60 variables associated with either sleepiness or fatigue, including demographic, mental health, and lifestyle factors, m…

Development of a clinician-administered National Institutes of Health-Brief Fatigue Inventory: A measure of fatigue in the context of depressive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is a complex, multidimensional condition. Although it is often associated with depression, it is not known whether it has a distinct network from depression or whether it can be clinically evaluated, separately. This study describes preliminary findings in the development of a brief, clinician-administered instrument to measure fatigue in the context of depressive disorders using items from existing clinician-administered depression and mania scales. METHODS: Based on items from prior fatigue measurements, items were selected from the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS)…

Slow wave sleep in the chronically fatigued: Power spectra distribution patterns in chronic fatigue syndrome and primary insomnia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate slow wave sleep (SWS) spectral power proportions in distinct clinical conditions sharing non-restorative sleep and fatigue complaints without excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), namely the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and primary insomnia (PI). Impaired sleep homeostasis has been suspected in both CFS and PI. METHODS: We compared perceived sleep quality, fatigue and sleepiness symptom-intensities, polysomnography (PSG) and SWS spectral power distributions of drug-free CFS and PI patients without comorbid sleep or mental disorders, with a good sleeper control group…

Evaluation of prolonged fatigue post-West Nile virus infection and association of fatigue with elevated antiviral and proinflammatory cytokines.

This study aimed to characterize fatigue postinfection among study participants with a history of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and determine whether antiviral and pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly elevated in those reporting prolonged fatigue. We found that 31% (44/140) of study participants experienced prolonged (more than 6 months) fatigue postinfection, with an average length of fatigue duration of 5 years. Females, those younger than 50 years of age, and those with symptomatic clinical WNV disease were significantly more likely to report fatigue. Pro-inflammatory and antivir…

The patient experience with fatigue and content validity of a measure to assess fatigue severity: qualitative research in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of the spine and large joints. Fatigue is a common symptom that many AS patients find significantly impacts their health-related quality of life. The Worst Fatigue - Numeric Rating Scale (WF-NRS) assesses the severity of this symptom during the previous 24-hour period. The objective of this study was to perform qualitative research to support the development and content validity of the WF-NRS. METHODS: Patients with AS were recruited from clinical sites in the U.S. for a qualitative study which fir…

Development of a patient reported outcome measure for fatigue in motor neurone disease: the Neurological Fatigue Index (NFI-MND).

BACKGROUND: The objective of this research was to develop a disease-specific measure for fatigue in patients with motor neurone disease (MND) by generating data that would fit the Rasch measurement model. Fatigue was defined as reversible motor weakness and whole-body tiredness that was predominantly brought on by muscular exertion and was partially relieved by rest. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were undertaken to confirm the suitability of a previously identified set of 52 neurological fatigue items as relevant to patients with MND. Patients were recruited from five U.K. MND clinics. Ques…

Sleep characteristics of persons with chronic fatigue syndrome and non-fatigued controls: results from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The etiology and pathophysiology of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) remain inchoate. Attempts to elucidate the pathophysiology must consider sleep physiology, as unrefreshing sleep is the most commonly reported of the 8 case-defining symptoms of CFS. Although published studies have consistently reported inefficient sleep and documented a variable occurrence of previously undiagnosed primary sleep disorders, they have not identified characteristic disturbances in sleep architecture or a distinctive pattern of polysomnographic abnormalities associated with CFS. METHODS: This study re…

Compassion Fatigue in Emergency Medicine: Current Perspectives.

Compassion fatigue (CF), or loss of ability to empathize or feel compassion for others for whom one cares, is a growing concern for emergency physicians (EP). EPs, by the nature of their jobs, work under unpredictable conditions at odd hours with high levels of exposure to traumatic events. They are placed under substantial psychological, physical, and cognitive pressure, with little opportunity to recover or reflect. CF occurs when this workplace stress leads to feelings of being overwhelmed, helpless, unsupported, and unable to cope. Additionally, primary traumatic stress from threats of wor…
