Primary bronchotomy for removal of a distal bronchial foreign body in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-old, spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented for acute onset cough and dyspnoea. Thoracic radiography revealed a radiopaque foreign body proximally in the right caudal main bronchus. Initial attempts at endoscopic retrieval using a flexible bronchoscope were unsuccessful, as the foreign body migrated progressively distally into the right caudal lobe bronchus, precluding bronchoscopic removal. The cat subsequently underwent a right fifth intercostal-space lateral thoracotomy. A primary bronchotomy was performed to retrieve a small stone, and the bronchus was cl

A 56-Year-Old Woman Presenting 19 Years After Pubic Bone Fracture with a Surgical Screw Foreign Body in the Bladder.

BACKGROUND Non-calculus foreign bodies in the bladder are rare and are usually introduced via the urethra. Reports of the migration of metallic foreign bodies from previous surgery are uncommon and mainly associated with surgical screws used for the internal fixation of pubic bone fracture and total hip replacement. This report is of a 56-year-old woman presenting with a surgical screw foreign body in the bladder 19 years after open surgical reduction and internal plate and screw fixation of traumatic fracture of the pubic bone. CASE REPORT A 56-year-old woman visited a urologist because of gr

Chronic foreign body of the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinus: surgical implications.

Chronic sinonasal foreign bodies present unique surgical challenges including tissue integration and anatomic migration. A patient with a history of multiple surgeries for cleft lip, palate, and nasal deformity presented with radiographic findings of a 4.3-cm linear foreign body traversing the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinus. Mucosalization and integration into the sphenoid rostrum were noted at the time of surgery. Endoscopic surgery techniques facilitated removal of the overlying mucosa and encasing bone, allowing successful surgical extraction. On inspection, the foreign body was consistent

Bronchoscopy-guided removal of intrabronchial coil migration after coil embolization of pulmonary arteriovenous malformation.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations develop in approximately 50% of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia patients. Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are often treated with coil embolization therapy. We report a case of a 45-year-old female with multiple pulmonary arteriovenous malformations due to underlying hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia who had undergone 14 coil embolization procedures over 16 years. She presented with sudden onset severe, unremitting, nonproductive cough from a foreign body sensation in the airway. Computed tomography of the chest demonstrated a metallic forei

Dislocated intraocular lens fixation using intraocular cowhitch knot.

PURPOSE: To describe a technique for suturing a dislocated intraocular lens (IOL) using an intraocular cowhitch knot without IOL extraction. METHODS: Through the sideports of paracentesis, a cowhitch knot is made outside of the anterior chamber by looping 10-0 Prolene around the haptics of the IOL. The knot is then tied in the anterior chamber by pulling up the suture. After repeating this for the opposite side, the cowhitch knots are fixated to the ciliary sulcus. RESULTS: In 4 cases treated this way, the IOL remained well positioned. CONCLUSION: This technique enables secure fixation of t

[Intrabronchial migratory cereal-ear, an unusual foreign body inhalation].

Bronchial foreign body inhalation is a frequent and potentially serious accident in children. It can provoke long-term complications such as bronchiectasis and recurrent pulmonary infections. The foreign body is generally blocked in a bronchus and induces obstructive emphysema with superinfection. We report 2 cases of bronchial inhalation of a migrating cereal-ear, eliminated by parietal fistulization, in 9- and 11-year-old boys.

Varied Manifestations of Sharp Penetrating Foreign Bodies in the Aerodigestive Tract: Our Experience.

Introduction Foreign body ingestion or aspiration is an emergency dealt by otorhinolaryngologists. It is most common among children and the geriatric population. It paves the way for critical morbidity when prompt treatment is not initiated. Therefore, in the absence of strong evidence to guide decision-making, all suspicious presentations of the ingested sharp foreign body need to be kept in mind while making a diagnosis. Hence, our study is aimed to document the varied manifestations of sharp penetrating foreign bodies in the aerodigestive tract. Materials and methods The medical records of

Advantages of Fluoroscopy for Accidental Ingestion of Multiple Magnets.

Foreign body ingestion is one of the common problems among children. A three-year-old girl presented to the emergency department 2 h after ingesting three small disk-type neodymium magnets. She had no gastrointestinal symptoms. Abdominal radiography revealed a foreign body in the left upper quadrant, which was the three circular magnets. Fluoroscopy was performed. She was placed in the right lateral decubitus position for 3 min and slowly returned to the supine position. Abdominal fluoroscopy revealed a foreign body migrating near the middle of the spine. Similarly, when she was placed in the

Intraluminal Migration of Surgical Mesh With Retained Metallic Tacks Causing Small Bowel Obstruction After Ventral Hernia Repair: A Case Report.

Mesh repair is commonly used for abdominal wall hernias. However, mesh-related complications, including infection, adhesion formation, and migration, remain important considerations. Mesh migration into the gastrointestinal tract represents an uncommon delayed postoperative complication that can manifest long after the initial surgical repair. Patients may experience a range of gastrointestinal symptoms depending on the location and extent of migration. We report a case of small bowel obstruction caused by intraluminal migration of surgical mesh with retained metallic fixation tacks. A 60-year

Foreign body-induced abscess resembling pancreatic neoplasia.

We report the case of a 44-year-old man presenting with abdominal pain and leukocytosis. His initial computed tomography demonstrated a pancreatic head mass concerning for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. However, on further review of the patient's imaging, the mass was determined to be an abscess caused by foreign body ingestion and gastric perforation rather than cancer. This report describes the clinical and radiographic distinctions between pancreatic neoplasia and abscess. It also reviews the pertinent medical literature on how such viscus perforations affect subsequent prognostication and clin

Colonoscopic identification of a foreign body causing an hepatic abscess.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic abscesses often result from a perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Although rare, this may occur via puncture by a foreign body. The object may directly extend from the stomach or duodenum into the liver, or rarely, the object may perforate the bowel distal to the duodenum and indirectly extend to the liver leading to the formation of an abscess. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old man developed an hepatic abscess. Although the abscess was identified on computed tomography, various imaging studies were unable to identify the cause of the infection. After an extended ICU cours

[Ingestion of button batteries. Epidemiology, clinical signs and therapeutic recommendations].

The frequency of ingested button batteries is about 10 per million population per year, and one in every 1,000 battery ingestions causes serious injuries. Most of the patients are children. Seven to 20% develop transient symptoms, owing to irritation or superficial corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract. The severe lesions are almost always confined to the oesophagus. Toxic effects from the battery contents are unimportant. Batteries lodged in the oesophagus may not cause initial symptoms, and it is recommended that when ingestion is suspected patients should be examined by fluoroscopy. Batte
