Natural killer (NK) activity is impaired in patients with positive serology for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We previously found an inhibitory effect of sera from hemophilic (He) HIV+ patients on normal NK activity. BACKGROUND: In a variety of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, a correlation between soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels (sIL-2R) and clinical stage is demonstrable. In mycosis fungoides (MF), two findings raise the question as to a similar correlation: (1) a proportion of tumor cells express IL-2 receptor and (2) sIL-2R is detectable in serum.

We investigated the induction of tissue factor by lymphokines in human monoblastic leukemia cell lines (U937) and leukemic cells from AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) patients. After incubation for 24 h, IL-2 enhanced the intracellular tissue factor 15-fold with U937 cells, and GM-CSF enhanced it 6-fold. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) production from synovial tissues of various diseases was examined. Augmented IL-6 production was found in inflammatory synovium not only in RA but also in other kinds of synovitis, including psoriatic arthritis and Behçet's disease. Increased amounts of IL-6-mRNA were detected in rheumatoid synovium using a dot blot hydridization technique. Twenty-four hour supernatants (MoF) were obtained from monocyte rich 2 h adherent cells of 19 leprosy patients and four healthy contacts. MoF from borderline and lepromatous patients produced 52-61% inhibition of human interleukin-2 (IL-2) production by a PHA conditioned T cell line (Jurkat).
