Origanum majoranum L. is a Lamiaceae medicinal plant with culinary and ethnomedical applications. Its biological and phytochemical profiles have been extensively researched. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the chemical composition and the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of O. majoranum high features, as well as to search for techniques for activity optimization. A metabolomics study of the crude extract of O. majoranum using liquid chromatography-high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC ± HR ± ESI ± MS) was conducted. Five fractions (petroleum ether, …

Rosmarinic acid (α-o-caffeoyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid; RA) is a naturally occurring hydroxylated compound commonly found in species of the subfamily Nepetoideae of the Lamiaceae and Boraginaceae, such as Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, and Perilla frutescens. RA is biosynthesized from the amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine by eight enzymes that include phenylalanine ammonia lyase and cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase. RA can also be chemically produced by the esterification of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid. RA and its numerous derivatives containing one o…

Natural dietary antioxidants are extensively studied for their ability to protect cells from miscellaneous damages. Marjoram volatile oil (Origanum majorana L., Lamiaceae) and grape seed extract (Vitis vinifera L., Vitaceae) are potent antioxidants. Effects of administration of marjoram volatile oil or grape seed extract on oral administration of ethanol, simultaneously, daily for 10 weeks were studied through determining epididymal spermatozoal analysis, serum testosterone level, weight and histopathological examination of testis, liver and brain. Glutathione level and lipid peroxidation cont…

BACKGROUND: Leonurus japonicus Houtt. (Lamiaceae) has traditionally been used to treat respiratory disorders, including cough and dyspnea. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of a standardized hydroalcoholic extract from the aerial parts of L. japonicus in an in vivo model of allergic asthma.
METHODS: Balb/c mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) and then treated intraperitoneally with L. japonicus (at doses of 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg), dexamethasone (at a dose of 2 mg/kg), or saline for seven consecutive days during intranasal OVA challenges. B…

Mosquitoes (Diperta: Culidae) act as vectors for several diseases, including malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. Mosquito repellents represent one of the primary measures used to reduce the risk of these diseases in humans by reducing mosquito landing and biting events. Nepetalactone, a natural insect repellent primarily found in the essential oil of catnip (Lamiaceae; Nepeta cataria), has established mosquito repellence properties, but has not been widely exploited as a mosquito repellent in malaria-endemic regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we evaluated the potential of a locally …

Thyme is widely distributed in the worldwild. In China, there are 15 species, 2 varieties and 1 variant. Thymus quinquecostatus which contains abundant bioactive terpenoids is an important wild medicinal and aromatic plant in Chinese native thymes. Thymus vulgaris 'Elsbeth' comes from Europe and is known for its medicinal properties. The terpenoids exist in the glandular trichomes (GTs), a special epidemal structure. In Lamiaceae, glandular trichomes usually include peltate glandular trichomes (PGTs) and capitate glandular trichomes (CGTs). In previous study, we had analysed the molecular mech…

The rising demand for safe plant compounds and herbal products that contribute positively to human health is in line with current market trends. Plants belonging to the Satureja genus, particularly the aromatic medicinal S. montana L. from the Lamiaceae family, are well suited to these trends as they serve as pharmaceutical raw materials. This research aimed to assess the influence of sowing date and fertilization doses, as well as their interaction, on the fresh weight, essential oil content, and composition of S. montana. Experimental cultivation involved varying nitrogen and phosphorus leve…

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: At present, use of synthetic pesticides to manage insects and other arthropods creates a number of issues that are related to the environment and public health. The goal of the present study is to find repellent activity of Vitex negundo and Curcuma longa herbal extracts against the wild species Simulium (blackfly) bite.
METHODS: We have studied Simulium biting behavior and tested the repellency of herbal extract obtained from Vitex negundo L. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae) and Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberal: Zingiberaceae) along with their essential oils in three locations in Aru…

Carvacrol, a phenolic monoterpene found in essential oils of plants of the Lamiaceae family, emerges as an alternative acaricide of plant origin. Its acetylation was proposed to obtain a derivative compound with a better pharmacological profile and lower toxicity to non-target organisms. The present study aimed to assess the preclinical safety of acetylcarvacrol after dermal application in Wistar rats, through the examination of hematological and biochemical parameters, as well as histopathological analysis of the skin, liver and kidney. For this, twenty rats were distributed into four groups …

Recently, numerous side effects of synthetic drugs have led to using medicinal plants as a reliable source of new therapy. Pain is a global public health problem with a high impact on life quality and a huge economic implication, becoming one of the most important enemies in modern medicine. The medicinal use of plants as analgesic or antinociceptive drugs in traditional therapy is estimated to be about 80% of the world population. The lamiaceae family, one of the most important herbal families, incorporates a wide variety of plants with biological and medical applications. In this study, the …

Vitex madiensis Oliv. (Lamiaceae) is traditionally used to treat malaria symptoms in Haut-Ogooué, Gabon. Leaves and stem barks extracts were obtained using dichloromethane (CH(2)Cl(2)), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH) as extraction solvents and fractionated on silica gel column. The in vitro antiplasmodial activity of CH(2)Cl(2), EtOAc and MeOH extracts and fractions was evaluated against the chloroquine-resistant FCB strain and field isolates of Plasmodium falciparum using the DELI test. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was tested on MRC-5 and THP1 cells using the tetrazolium salt M…

Lavandula stoechas L. (Lamiaceae) has been used for a long time in traditional medicine as an anticonvulsant and antispasmodic. The aqueous-methanolic extract of L. stoechas flowers (LS) was studied for its possible anticonvulsant and antispasmodic activities. When tested in mice, LS (600 mg/kg) significantly reduced the severity and increased the latency of convulsions induced by pentylene tetrazole (PTZ). LS likewise reduced PTZ's lethality. LS up to a dose of 600 mg/kg was found devoid of any hypnotic effect in mice, however, animals were found to be dull, calm and relaxed. The sedative eff…
