Variation of trace metals in ancient and contemporary Japanese bones.

Excavated and contemporary bones (rib cortexes) of a mature age (40-60 yr) were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry for the concentra … a were 0.20-0.33 g/g in the excavated bones and 0.17 g/g in the contemporary bones. Among the trace metals, such as Cu, Fe, Mn, and Pb, which showed remarkably elevated concentrations in the Edo era bones, Cu, Fe, and Mn were found to be strongly associated with soil contamination. Lead levels only slightly increased between the Jomon and Kofun eras, but …

Heavy metals in Ras Beirut prawns and sea urchin eggs.

Whole samples of Palaemon elegans Rathke, 1837 and eggs of Paracentrotus lividus Lamarck, 1816 were collected on the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon in the summer and fall of 1977 and the spring of 1978. All were analysed for lead, cadmium, copper and other heavy metals. Lead concentrations in both the prawns and sea urchin eggs appeared to be highest in the summer and lowest in the spring, whereas cadmium was low in all seasons with only a few elevated readings. The strongest tendency towards seasonal variation was seen in the copper levels of the prawns, which were high in summer, much lower in…

Atomic absorption analysis of some trace metals of toxicological interest.

A selective and critical review, mainly from 1971 to 1974, of atomic absorption applied to the determination of eight toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, thallium, arsenic, bismuth, beryllium, and boron) in blood, urine, and tissue is presented. Discussion involves both flame and flameless atomization, sample preparation, matrix modification, background correction, and contamination. Advantages of other atomic spectrometric techniques and use of recent confirmatory instrumental methods are included. Some normal and toxic levels are mentioned.

Complications and re-revisions after revisions of 528 metal-on-metal hips because of adverse reaction to metal debris.

Background and purpose - There is limited amount of evidence about optimal revision indications, technique, and implants when performing revision surgery for metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacements due to adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD). We assessed which factors are related to re-revisions and complications after a revision of MoM hip arthroplasty because of ARMD. We also aimed to provide information on optimal implants for these revisions.Patients and methods - 420 MoM total hip arthroplasties (THA) and 108 MoM hip resurfacings were implanted and later revised at our institution. We us

Metal-Limited Growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae for Characterization of Metal-Responsive Genes and Metal Acquisition from Host Ligands.

Ход выполнения metals such as iron and zinc are vital nutrients known to play key roles in prokaryotic processes including gene regulation, catalysis, and protein structure. Metal sequestration by hosts often leads to metal limitation for the bacterium. This limitation induces bacterial gene expression whose protein products allow bacteria to overcome their metal-limited environment. Characterization of such genes is challenging. Bacteria must be grown in meticulously prepared media that allows sufficient access to nutritional metals to permit bacterial growth while maintaining a metal profile conduciv…

Increased metal allergy in patients with failed metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty and peri-implant T-lymphocytic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: In 16 patients with revised metal-on-metal arthroplasty and peri-implant lymphocytic inflammation, we verified the role of metal … h to Molybdenum (Mo) and Manganese (Mn). Ten of 16 patients (62%) showed enhanced LTT reactivity to metals: 7/16 to Ni, 7/16 to Co, 5/16 to Cr, 5/16 to Mo and 4/16 to Mn. CONCLUSIONS: The lymphocyte dominated peri-implant inflammation may well reflect an allergic hyper-reactivity in these patients, given the high rate of concomitantly found metal allerg …

Effectiveness of metal-metal and metal-organic compound combinations against Plutella xylostella: implications for plant elemental defense.

Plants that contain elevated foliar metal concentrations can be categorized as accumulators or, if the accumulation is extreme, hyperaccumulators. The defense hypothesis suggests that these plants may be defended against folivore attack, and recent research has indicated that metal concentrations at or below the accumulator range may be defensively effective. This experiment explored the toxicity of four metals hyper-accumulated by plants (Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and asked if combinations of metals, or metals and organic chemicals, might broaden the defensive effectiveness of metals. Metals were u…

Characterisation of wear particles produced by metal on metal and ceramic on metal hip prostheses under standard and microseparation simulation.

The failure of metal on polyethylene total hip replacements due to wear particle induced osteolysis and late aseptic loosening has focused interest upon alternative bearings, such as metal on metal implants. A recent advance in this field has been the development of a novel ceramic on metal implant. The characteristics of the wear particles generated in this low-wearing bearing have not been previously determined. The aims of this study were to characterise metal wear particles from metal on metal and ceramic on metal hips under standard and adverse (microseparation) wear conditions. Accurate

Comparison of Wear Rate between Ceramic-on-Ceramic, Metal on Highly Cross-linked Polyethylene, and Metal-on-Metal Bearings.

Objective  Currently, there is a lack of evidence on the medium-term follow-up of cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) using metal on highly cross-linked polyethylene (MoP), ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC), and metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings. Our aim was to calculate the 5- to 10-year wear rate and the incidence rate of osteolysis for 3 types of bearings. Methods  A total of 77 patients underwent MoP, 105 underwent ceramic CoC, and 55 underwent MoM THAs. The average patient age at the time of surgery was 64.7, 55.9, and 59.9 years old in the MoP, CoC, and MoM bearings, respectively. Clinical and ra

MRI findings following metal on metal hip arthroplasty and their relationship with metal ion levels and acetabular inclination angles.

Following the global recall of all ASR metal on metal hip products, our aim was to correlate MRI findings with acetabular inclination angles and metal ion levels in patients with these implants. Both cobalt and chromium levels were significantly higher in the presence of a periprosthetic fluid collection. There was no association between the presence of a periprosthetic mass, bone marrow oedema, trochanteric bursitis or greater levels of abductor muscle destruction for cobalt or chromium. There was no association between the level of periprosthetic tissue reaction and the acetabular inclinatio

Metal-on-metal hip resurfacing compared with 28-mm diameter metal-on-metal total hip replacement: a randomised study with six to nine years' follow-up.

A total of 219 hips in 192 patients aged between 18 and 65 years were randomised to 28-mm metal-on-metal uncemented total hip replacements (THRs, 107 hips) or hybrid hip resurfacing (HR, 112 hips). At a mean follow-up of eight years (6.6 to 9.3) there was no significant difference between the THR and HR groups regarding rate of revision (4.0% (4 of 99) vs 5.8% (6 of 104), p = 0.569) or re-operation rates without revision (5.1% (5 of 99) vs 2.9% (3 of 104), p = 0.428). In the THR group one recurrent dislocation, two late deep infections and one peri-prosthetic fracture required revision, wherea

Assessment of heavy metals exposure, noise and thermal safety in the ambiance of a vacuum metallurgy separation system for recycling heavy metals from crushed e-wastes.

Vacuum metallurgy separation (VMS) is a technically feasible method to recover Pb, Cd and other heavy metals from crushed e-wastes. To further determine the environmental impacts and safety of this method, heavy metals exposure, noise and thermal safety in the ambiance of a vacuum metallurgy separation system are evaluated in this article. The mass concentrations of total suspended particulate (TSP) and PM10 are 0.1503 and 0.0973 mg m(-3) near the facilities. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Sn in TSP samples are 0.0104, 0.1283 and 0.0961 μg m(-3), respectively. Health risk assessments show th…

Correlation clusters in the accumulation of metals in human scalp hair: effects of age, community of residence, and abundances of metals in air and water supplies.

Scalp hair samples taken from 122 children and 27 adults from three native Indian villages in northern Alberta, Canada were analyzed for 32 metals, in an attempt to trace industrial pollution into the human population. One of the villages has been exposed since 1967 to increased levels of several metals due to its proximity to the world's first two oil sands petroleum extraction plants (Suncor and Syncrude), which release large amounts of metals into the environment. Metal-enriched particulates are emitted at a rate of 547-780 kg h-1 for Suncor, and 713-1067 kg h-1 for Syncrude. To test the hy…

Pseudotumours, cobalt and clinical outcome in small head metal-on-metal versus conventional metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MoM THA) is associated with the formation of pseudotumours. Studies mainly concern pseudotumour formation in large head MoM THA. We performed a long-term follow-up study, comparing pseudotumour incidence in small head metal-on-metal (SHMoM) THA with conventional metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) THA. Predisposing factors to pseudotumour formation were assessed. METHODS: From a previous randomised controlled trial comparing SHMoM (28 mm) cemented THA with conventional MoP cemented THA, patients were screened using a standardised CT protocol for the

Cumulative revision rate is higher in metal-on-metal THA than metal-on-polyethylene THA: analysis of survival in a community registry.

BACKGROUND: Metal-on-metal (MOM) THA bearing technology has focused on improving the arc of motion and stability and minimizing wear compared with traditional metal-on-polyethylene (MOP) bearing couples. It is unclear whether this more costly technology adds value in terms of improved implant survival. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study evaluated Kaplan-Meier survival, revisions for dislocation, and cost of MOM THA compared with metal-on-cross-linked polyethylene (MOXP) THA in a community joint registry, with subset analysis of the recalled Depuy ASR™ implant. METHODS: All MOM THAs (resurfacings
