Lipoatrophia semicircularis: Clinical study and follow-up of 76 cases in Madrid, Spain. Classification proposal.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical presentations of Lipoatrophia semicircularis (LS) vary, and diagnostic criteria are unclear. Several etiopathogenic factors, including occupational environmental ones, have been suggested. We aimed to describe a cluster of cases of suspected LS that started to appear in May 2008 among employees of the city council of Madrid, Spain. We report the actions taken by the council's Occupational Health Service and propose clinical categories with prognostic implications. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective observational case series study including prospectively collected da

The relationship between self-rated health and occupational accidents: a nationwide prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health is a comprehensive measure of health status that may influence occupational accidents, particularly those involving human factors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-rated health and occupational accidents across various industries and occupations. We also investigated the relationship stratified by the type of accidents. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using online self-administered questionnaires targeting workers in Japan. A baseline survey was conducted in March 2022, followed by a 1-year follow-up survey. Self-rated he

The impact of COVID-19 on illegitimate tasks across occupations in Sweden: a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to major societal changes. Although the pandemic has significantly impacted the way we work, few studies have examined its effects on the prevalence of illegitimate tasks, i.e., tasks that are perceived as either unnecessary or unreasonable. Occupational groups were likely affected differently. This study investigates the prevalence of illegitimate tasks for registered nurses, teachers, IT specialists, and construction workers in pre-pandemic (2018), early-pandemic (2020), late-pandemic (2022), and post-pandemic (2024) periods. METHODS: Data were collecte

Allergic contact dermatitis and other occupational skin diseases in health care workers in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases in 2005-2016.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers are an important risk group for occupational skin disease (OSD). AIMS: To study diagnoses and causes of OSDs in health care workers in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases (FROD) in 2005-2016. METHODS: We searched the FROD for dermatological cases (a) in health care-related occupations defined by ISCO-08 and (b) in the industrial branch of health care defined by European industry standard classification system (NACE rev. 2). RESULTS: Health care workers comprised 19% of all OSD cases in the FROD, and irritant contact dermatitis dominated the diagnose

Socio-economic and occupational risk factors for gastric cancer: a cohort study in Sweden.

The effects of socio-economic/occupational factors on gastric cancer at various subsites (including corpus, cardia and unspecified cancers) are not well known. To investigate this issue, we carried out a follow-up study on the economically active Swedish population, based on the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. We calculated standardized incidence ratios and 95% confidence intervals for different occupational groups, adjusted for age, period, region and socio-economic status. The reference group was all the economically active population. Manual workers and farmers were at an increased risk of

Review of epidemiological studies on the occupational risk of tuberculosis in low-incidence areas.

This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence for occupationally acquired tuberculosis and considers the implications for the prevention of tuberculosis. The relevant epidemiological studies were identified on the basis of the Medline data bank, starting with the year 1966. The evaluation of occupational groups with an elevated tuberculosis risk is exclusively based on epidemiologic studies of good or acceptable quality, applying clearly defined criteria of methodological quality. In summary, the available epidemiological evidence suggests that the risk of tuberculosis is elevated in the

Occupational Risk in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between occupational exposures and knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: We systematically searched for observational studies that examined the relationship between occupational exposures and knee OA and total knee replacement. Four databases were searched up to October 1, 2019. Two reviewers independently assessed study quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and evidence quality using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Subgroup meta-analyses were conducted for important study characteristics and each type of occ

Occupational risk factors for low grade and high grade glioma: results from an international case control study of adult brain tumours.

The majority of suspected occupational risk factors for adult brain tumours have yet to be confirmed as etiologically relevant. Within an international case-control study on brain tumours, lifelong occupational histories and information on exposures to specific substances were obtained by direct interviews to further investigate occupational risk factors for glioma. This is one of the largest studies of brain tumours in adults, including 1,178 cases and 1987 population controls from 8 collaborating study centres matched for age, gender and centre. All occupational information, was aggregated i

Occupational patterns and risks of occupational accidents with biological material: A cross-sectional study, Brazil, 2015-2019.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the profile of occupational accidents involving biological material in Brazil and identify patterns associated with these events. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional design using secondary data from occupational accidents registered in the Notifiable Health Conditions Information System (SINAN) between 2015 and 2019. Absolute and relative frequencies were used to describe demographic variables, working conditions, and types of exposure. Multiple correspondence and hierarchical clustering analyses were employed, using values of the v-test to evaluate asso

[Selected work-related health problems in drivers of public transport vehicles].

The literature data and our own studies show that in drivers of public transport vehicles, largely intensified work-related risk factors for arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, duodenal and gastric ulcer diseases and back pain syndrome are found. These involves occupational risk factors as well as classic ones, such as obesity, limited physical activity or tobacco smoking. Among occupational risk factors, stress induced by the responsibility for assuring public safety in heavy urban traffic, time pressure and contacts with passengers predominate. Other burdens observed in this occup

The descriptive epidemiology of warts in the community.

Warts are common skin infections caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and affect most people sometime in their life. A number of epidemiological studies on the prevalence of warts have been completed in schools, various occupational groups, general practices and hospitals. All studies have relied on a subjective measure for the diagnosis of warts. Cross-sectional studies completed in schools have shown the prevalence in children to vary from 2 to 20%. Occupational handlers of meat, poultry and fish have a higher prevalence than other workers. Children and young adults are the groups most affec

Risk factors associated with the seroprevalence of leptospirosis, amongst at-risk groups in and around Tanga city, Tanzania.

The epidemiological status of human leptospirosis in Tanzania has not been well defined because of a general lack of awareness of the disease and difficulties in its diagnosis. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study, using the microscopic agglutination test with a threshold titre of 1 : 160, was therefore conducted, among various occupational groups from Tanga city, in November 2005. Of the 199 subjects investigated, 30 (15.1%) were found to have antibodies that reacted with antigens from at least one of the six Leptospira interrogans serovars used in the agglutination test. Of the seropositiv

Analysis of Prevalence and Risk Factors of Contact Sensitization with respect to the Occupational Profiles in a Greek Patient Cohort: A Retrospective Analysis of a Greek Referral Centre and Future Perspectives.

Contact dermatitis is a frequent skin disorder related to environmental and occupational etiological factors, which could potentially affect all age groups, as well as both genders. The current study is aimed at exploring the patterns of contact sensitization with respect to the population's occupational patterns in Greece. A retrospective analysis was performed in a cohort of 1978 patients from 2014 to 2016. Patients were divided into two categories; blue collars (BlC) and white collars (WhC), as well as detailed occupation was considered. Separation was performed on the basis of their profes

Incidence of elderly eye injuries in automobile crashes: the effects of lens stiffness as a function of age.

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the incidence of eye injuries with respect to occupant age in frontal automobile crashes as well as to investigate possible injury mechanisms of the elderly eye and the effects of lens stiffness. The National Automotive Sampling System was searched from years 1993-2000 for three separate occupant age groups of 16-35 years old, 36-65 years old, and 66 years old and greater in order to compare the total number of weighted occupants who sustained an eye injury to the number of occupants who sustained an eye injury per age group. Three separate impact scen

Acute toxic encephalopathy induced by organic solvent exposure: a case report of diagnostic challenges and occupational health implications.

BACKGROUND: Toxic encephalopathy, which results from exposure to neurotoxic substances, poses a considerable clinical challenge, especially for occupational groups like painters and construction workers. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 35-year-old female painter who experienced acute toxic encephalopathy, presenting with severe headache, nausea, and vomiting. Initially, her condition was misdiagnosed as cervical spondylosis. However, recognizing her occupational exposure to organic solvents was essential for arriving at the correct diagnosis. This case highlights the importanc

Psoriasis predisposition and occupational triggering factors in the appraisal of occupational medical expertises.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease with a genetic background. Local psoriatic changes can be triggered by exogenous mechanical or irritant factors. Causative occupational factors have to be distinguished from the spontaneous course of psoriasis in occupational medical evaluations. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the medico-legal grounds for a homogenous assessment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The presented recommendations were developed in a working group for Occupational and Environmental Dermatology (ABD) and the German contact dermatitis group (DKG) of the German De
