BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are one of the most common upper extremity injuries requiring surgery in professional football. Surgical fixation of forearm fractures may speed recovery and decrease games missed in football.
METHODS: National Football League (NFL) players who underwent forearm fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) were identified. Matched controls (position, age, experience, performance) were identified. Control and case performance scores were calculated using a standardized scoring system. Return to sport (RTS) in the NFL was defined as playing in a single NFL

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of open reduction and internal fixation with locking anatomical plate for treating valgus impacted proximal humerus fracture.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of 38 patients with valgus impacted proximal humerus fracture who underwent open reduction and internal fixation with locking anatomical plate between January 2009 and January 2014. There were 25 males and 13 females, aged from 47 to 63 years (mean, 52.3 years); the left and the right sides were involved in 18 and 20 cases, respectively. The causes of fracture in

BACKGROUND: To take surgical treatment or non-surgical treatment on condylar fracture, clinicians are faced with a difficult choice. Traditional treatment on condylar fracture advocated non-surgical treatment, including intermaxillary traction and intermaxillary fixation, which relies mainly on condylar rebuilt. In recent years, with the development of rigid internal fixation, open reduction and internal fixation technique has been well applied in the treatment of condylar fracture and has obtained an optimistic therapeutic effect. More and more of patients with condylar fracture are advised t

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effectiveness of conservative dressing change method in treating skin necrosis after open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) of calcaneal fracture.
METHODS: Between November 2007 and June 2010, 21 cases of skin necrosis after ORIF of calcaneal fracture were treated, including 18 cases of Sanders type II and 3 cases of Sanders type III. There were 20 males and 1 female with an average age of 33.1 years (range, 23-60 years). All fractures were close fractures and were treated by ORIF with plate. Skin necrosis occurred at 3-5 days (mean, 4 days) after internal fixa

Retrosternal displacement of the medial aspect of the clavicle after physeal fracture is rare. We treated six patients with this injury between 1995 and 1998, all as an emergency in order to avoid complications associated with compression of adjacent mediastinal structures. Attempted closed reduction was undertaken, but all required open reduction and internal fixation using a wire suture. There were no associated complications. Five were reviewed clinically and radiologically at a minimum of one year after operation. All had regained full use of the affected arm without pain and had resumed t

In spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC), since the cartilage is congenitally abnormal, functional recovery of an intra-articular fracture is uncertain even with surgical treatment. We report a 29-year-old Japanese woman with SEDC whose left knee injury (intercondylar femur fracture and tibial plateau fracture) was surgically reduced and fixed. Although special care was required during the operation for associated atlantoaxial instability and cardiopulmonary suppression due to severe thoracolumbar kyphoscoliosis as well as osteopenia, she had neither restriction of knee motion nor pain

BACKGROUND: Hand therapy after surgery for distal radius fractures is associated with improved functional outcomes. However, financial impediments can be a potential barrier to adherence to postoperative care requirements. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between surgical and therapy out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses and therapy visits after operative treatment of a distal radius fracture.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective cohort study of surgically treated patients with a distal radius fracture using Merative MarketScan Research Databases (2019 through 2021). Mu

STUDY DESIGN: Face and content validation of a surgical simulation model.
OBJECTIVE: Open reduction and internal fixation in displaced subcondylar mandibular fractures is standard care. This requires an extraoral (eg: retromandibular, transparotideal) or intraoral approach. An intraoral approach requires further training since specialized instrumentation such as the 90° screwdriver system and endoscopes might be needed. Currently, no simulation models are available for training residents in intraoral reduction and fixation of subcondylar mandibular fractures. Therefore, we present a validated

We present the management of an OTA-43B Pilon fracture with a depressed plafond fragment, medial comminution, and displacement of the Chaput fragment. The patient was initially managed with external fixation to gain initial reduction of the pilon fracture and to allow the soft tissues to heal. As demonstrated, the extensile anterior approach can be modified and used to see the anteromedial and anterolateral tibial plafond so an anatomic reduction could be obtained. Also detailed is the reduction and fixation strategy and soft tissue closure, all of which plays a critical role in the outcome.

BACKGROUND: There is no standardized therapeutic strategy for locked posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation (PSFD), and no consensus exists on the analysis of preoperative factors. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate functional results and complications in a series of PSFD cases managed with open surgical treatment.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with locked PSFD who underwent open surgical treatment with reduction and osteosynthesis between April 2016 and March 2020 were included. All participants were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Functional assessment used the mod

C1 fractures with an intact transverse ligament are usually treated conservatively. Patients who present with a progressive diastasis of bone fragments and a progressive articular subluxation mainly attributed to progressive lengthening of the transverse ligament (TAL) fibers can be treated with a C1 "C-clamp" fusion. A 75-year-old male who sustained a motor vehicle accident was neurologically intact. A computed tomography (CT) imaging demonstrated a Jefferson's type-C1 fracture with a slight lateral displacement of the C1 left lateral mass (LM) and a rotatory subluxation on the right. MRI sho

BACKGROUND: Optimal management for a pulseless supracondylar humerus fracture associated with anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) or median nerve injury is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of pulseless supracondylar humerus fractures associated with AIN or median nerve injury, to assess open versus closed surgical management, to determine factors associated with the need for neurovascular intervention, and to report the outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed at 4 pediatric trauma hospitals on all patients who sustained a Gartland III or IV suprac

Superior variety of anterior dislocation of the hip is a rare injury. Its occurrence with acetabular fractures has been documented infrequently. We report a case of superior dislocation of the hip with anterior column acetabular fracture. Open reduction of the hip and internal fixation of the fracture was carried out using a twin incision technique. The course to recovery has been uneventful.

OBJECTIVE: To study the curative effects of the treatment of tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament with open reduction and steel-wire internal fixation.
METHODS: From January 2003 to June 2009, 28 patients of tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament were treated with open reduction and steel-wire internal fixation through posteromedial inverted "L" approach. There were 19 males and 9 females with an average age of 35.3 years old ranging from 16 to 55 years. The X-ray examination showed that there were II degree displaced in 10 cases and III degree in 1

Fracture-dislocations of the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joints are frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed at initial presentation. This is a comparative cohort study over a period of five years comparing primary open reduction and internal fixation in 22 patients (23 feet) with secondary corrective arthrodesis in 22 patients (22 feet) who presented with painful malunion at a mean of 22 months (1.5 to 45) after injury. In the first group primary treatment by open reduction and internal fixation for eight weeks with Kirschner-wires or screws was undertaken, in the second group treatment was by se
