AIMS: Both adult and larval Ostertagia circumcincta infections raise abomasal pH and serum gastrin and pepsinogen concentrations, either because of physical effects of the worms or from their chemical secretions. The study was designed to examine whether adult worms require contact with the gastric mucosa to effect changes in gastric secretion.
METHODS: Abomasal pH and serum gastrin and pepsinogen concentrations were measured in four groups of sheep: Group A (n = 4): abomasal contents containing about 18,000 adult O. circumcincta were obtained from donor sheep, concentrated and infused into 5

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of AMAG are diverse and easily overlooked. The exact diagnostic criteria for AMAG are yet to be standardized, and serological tests lack clinical practices.
METHODS: This case report demonstrates the process of searching for etiologic agents in a patient with PA.
RESULTS: Serological tests showed positive APCAs, decreased serum pepsinogen (PG)I, decreased PGI/PGII ratio, and increased serum gastrin (GAS). After supplementation with hematopoietic raw materials such as vitamin B12 and folic acid, the patient recovered well.
CONCLUSIONS: This case report

AIM: To study the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and autoimmune type atrophic gastritis.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients with different grades of atrophic gastritis were analysed using enzyme immunoassay-based serology, immunoblot-based serology, and histology to reveal a past or a present H. pylori infection. In addition, serum markers for gastric atrophy (pepsinogen I, pepsinogen I/II and gastrin) and autoimmunity [parietal cell antibodies (PCA), and intrinsic factor (IF), antibodies] were determined.
RESULTS: Of the 14 patients with severe gastric atrophy, as

The present study was performed in order to evaluate: (1) the influence of a bicarbonate-alkaline mineral water (Uliveto) on digestive symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia; (2) the effects of Uliveto on preclinical models of gastric functions. Selected patients complained of dyspeptic symptoms in the absence of digestive lesions or Helicobacter pylori infection within the previous 3 months. They were treated with Uliveto water (1.5 l day(-1)) for 30 days. Frequency and severity of symptoms were assessed at baseline and day 30 by a score system. Preclinical experiments were carried ou

The effects of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on ulcerogenesis and gastric secretion were evaluated in a pylorus-ligated rat model. Oral administration of salicylate (50 mg/kg), aspirin (50 mg/kg), and indomethacin (3.5 mg/kg) significantly increased ulcerogenesis over the basal value by six- to sevenfold, but ibuprofen's (10 mg/kg) fourfold increase was not significant. Aspirin in conjunction with histamine (0.5 mg/kg subcutaneously) significantly increased ulcerogenesis by 2.7-fold compared to histamine alone. Basal acid secretion was increased significantly by 156% after indomethacin,

Histomorphology of the gastric and intestinal glands was investigated in 19 sexually mature, adult guineapigs by light and transmission electron microscopy. Gastric glands exhibited the cytological characteristics of oxynticopeptic cells capable of both hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsinogen secretion. In the literature, occurrence of oxynticopeptic cells in the proventriculus of the domestic fowl (Toner, 1963; Bell & Freeman, 1971) and in the gastric glands of frogs has been reported (Sedar, 1961; Patt & Patt, 1969; Forte & Forte, 1970). It has been claimed by other investigators (Herriot et

We investigated the effects of stimulation of the nucleus ambiguus (NA) complex on gastroduodenal motility and gastric secretion in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats. Motility was measured by use of extraluminal force transducers sutured to the body, antrum, pylorus, and duodenum. Secretion was measured by determining changes in gastric pH, titratable acidity, and pepsinogen activity. Stimulation of the NA complex (right NA in 11 animals and left NA in 8 animals) elicited contractions of the antrum, pylorus, and duodenum, as well as sinus bradycardia and hypotension using stimulus parameters

Autoimmune gastritis (AIG), a chronic inflammatory disease occurs as a result of a complex interaction between host-related and environmental factors. AIG may progress to severe atrophic gastritis secondary autoimmune-mediated parietal cell destruction in the stomach. AIG can be diagnosed based on anti-parietal cell antibody tests and endoscopy, which reveals widespread gastric corpus atrophy in patients with low serum pepsinogen I levels, a low pepsinogen I/II ratio, and elevated serum gastrin levels on serological testing. Tissue biopsy findings, which include mucosal atrophy and lymphocytic

Background: About 10% of gastric cancer (GC) has been described to be Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive. Previous researches have described the association between EBV and GC. However, the association of EBV with atrophic gastritis (AG) is underrecognized. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between EBV and AG and assess the influence of EBV on gastric function. Methods: A total of 468 pathologically-confirmed chronic gastritis patients underwent circulating EBV DNA test, include 271 non-atrophic gastritis (NAG) and 197 AG patients. Results: In this study, H. pylori infection rate

BACKGROUND: Family history may inform risks of gastric cancer and preneoplastic lesions.
METHODS: We examined associations with history of cancer in first-degree relatives for 307 incident gastric cancer cases among 20,720 male smokers in a prospective study in Finland. Cox regression was used to calculate gastric cancer hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs for low serum pepsinogen, a marker of gastric atrophy.
RESULTS: Gastric cancer risk was associated with gastric cancer history in first-degree rela

Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GAFG) and pyloric gland adenoma (PGA) have recently been recognized as rare types of neoplasia. We performed comparative immunohistochemical and genetic analyses of 3 GAFGs and 12 PGAs. All of the 3 GAFGs were diffusely positive for pepsinogen-I, MIST1 and MUC6, indicating the predominantly chief cell/mucous neck cell differentiation of these tumors. A small number of H.K-ATPase-positive parietal cells were also scattered. PGAs invariably exhibited diffuse MUC6 and TFF2 expression, consistent with the pyloric gland differentiation of these tumor

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a well-established precursor of intestinal gastric cancer, but epidemiologic data about its occurrence are sparse. We provide an overview on studies that examined the prevalence of CAG in different parts of the world. Articles containing data about the prevalence of chronic atrophic gastritis in unselected population samples and published until November 2005 were identified by searching the MEDLINE database. Furthermore, the references in the identified publications were screened for additional suitable studies. Studies comprising at least 50 subjects were i

Ghrelin is primarily secreted from the stomach and has been implicated in the coordination of eating behavior and weight regulation. The effects of Helicobacter pylori infection on plasma ghrelin concentration and gastric ghrelin production still have not been well known. We determined plasma ghrelin concentration in a total of 160 consecutive individuals with normal body mass index including 110 H. pylori-infected and 50 H. pylori-negative subjects. The expression levels of ghrelin mRNA and ghrelin-producing cells in the gastric mucosa were quantified with real-time quantitative RT-PCR and im
