Measurement of gait by an in-shoe motion sensor system: feasibility and potential application in healthy adults and patients with orthopedic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Gait varies in accordance with several factors, including age, gender, and the presence of disease. A recently developed system allows the convenient measurement of gait using in-shoe motion sensors and a smartphone application. Here, this system was used to measure seven gait parameters in 40 healthy adults and 45 patients with orthopedic disorders. METHODS: For the healthy volunteers, gait monitoring was performed for one month. This monitoring was also performed at home before and one year after surgery in patients with knee or spine disorders, and at hospital at four time poin

In-Shoe Sensor Measures of Loading Asymmetry during Gait as a Predictor of Frailty Development in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Clinical walk tests may not predict the development of frailty in healthy older adults. With advancements in wearable technology, it may be possible to predict the development of frailty using loading asymmetry parameters during clinical walk tests. This prospective cohort study aimed to test the hypothesis that increased limb loading asymmetry predicts frailty risk in community-living older adults. Sixty-three independently ambulant community-living adults aged ≥ 65 years were recruited, and forty-seven subjects completed the ten-month follow-up after baseline. Loading asymmetry index of net

In-shoe multi-segment foot kinematics measurement during the stance phase of running using a stretch strain sensor.

Multi-segment foot kinematics during shod running are difficult to investigate in clinical settings. Stretch strain sensors can measure foot kinematics; however, whether they can evaluate foot kinematics during shod running or at the midfoot kinematics remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the stretch strain sensor could reveal differences between shod and barefoot conditions and midfoot kinematics during running. Eighteen healthy adults were included in the study. A stretch strain sensor and three-dimensional motion capture system were used to measure foot kinematics durin

Relations between maternal height, shoe size, and the success of vaginal delivery in birth weight over 4000 g.

OBJECTIVE: Macrosomia is associated with increased risk of fetal and maternal complications such as trauma during birth, cesarean delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, and shoulder dystocia. Sonographic estimation of fetal weight is imprecise particularly in excessively large fetuses, prompting the need for additional measures to assess the feasibility of vaginal delivery of a macrosomic newborn and thus improve prenatal consultation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included women who delivered a singleton macrosomic newborn (birth weight>4,000 g), either vaginally (N

Curved carbon-plated shoe may further reduce forefoot loads compared to flat plate during running.

Using a curved carbon-fiber plate (CFP) in running shoes may offer notable performance benefit over flat plates, yet there is a lack of research exploring the influence of CFP geometry on internal foot loading during running. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CFP mechanical characteristics on forefoot biomechanics in terms of plantar pressure, bone stress distribution, and contact force transmission during a simulated impact peak moment in forefoot strike running. We employed a finite element model of the foot-shoe system, wherein various CFP configurations, includi…

Gait characteristics in patients with distal radius fracture using an in-shoe inertial measurement system at various gait speeds.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRF) commonly occur in early postmenopausal females as the first fragility fracture. Although the incidence of DRF in this set of patients may be related to a lower ability to control their balance and gait, the detailed gait characteristics of DRF patients have not been examined. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is it possible to identify the physical and gait features of DRF patients using in-shoe inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors at various gait speeds and to develop a machine learning (ML) algorithm to estimate patients with DRF using gait? METHODS: In this c

A Direct Method for Mapping the Center of Pressure Measured by an Insole Pressure Sensor System to the Shoe's Local Coordinate System.

A direct method to express the center of pressure (CoP) measured by an insole pressure sensor system (IPSS) into a known coordinate system measured by motion tracking equipment is presented. A custom probe was constructed with reflective markers to allow its tip to be precisely tracked with motion tracking equipment. This probe was utilized to activate individual sensors on an IPSS that was placed in a shoe fitted with reflective markers used to establish a local shoe coordinate system. When pressed onto the IPSS the location of the probe's tip was coincident with the CoP measured by the IPSS

One Shoe Doesn't Fit All: A Contextual Approach to Therapeutic Footwear for People at Risk of Diabetes-Related Foot Ulceration.

INTRODUCTION: People at risk of diabetes-related foot ulcers are recommended to always use therapeutic footwear when weight-bearing, to help prevent ulcers. These recommendations are supported by good quality evidence, yet adherence by patients to using this footwear is low. One reason may be because these recommendations do not consider that footwear use is highly contextual to the physical or sociocultural environments it is intended to be used. In this paper, we propose and discuss a contextual approach to considering therapeutic footwear solutions. CONTEXTUAL APPROACH TO THERAPEUTIC FOOTW
