Induction and measurement of episodic memories in healthy adults.

Episodic memory is that part of our memory which enables us to memorize a personal event (what) in terms of place (where) and time (when). It is expressed on verbal and behavioral level. In this report we describe a novel method to induce de novo episodic memories in humans for unique events in the laboratory and measure them with standardized ratings and non-verbal motor responses. Visual stimuli were hidden in four out of eight quadrants on a computer screen. Each of these quadrants could be highlighted by pushing a corresponding button on a keyboard which either revealed a visual stimulus f

Psychophysical indexes of temporal processing abnormalities in children with developmental dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia and children progressing normally in reading performed several perceptual tasks to determine (a) the psychophysical measures that best differentiate children with dyslexia from children with average reading abilities; (b) the extent of temporal processing deficits in a single, well-defined group of children with dyslexia; and (c) the co-occurrence of visual and auditory temporal processing deficits in children with dyslexia. 4 of our 12 psychophysical tasks indicated differences in temporal processing ability between children with dyslexia and children with good reading

Long-Term Scar Perception and Quality of Life After Open Thyroidectomy in Chinese Patients: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported scar perception and quality of life (QoL) are critical, yet understudied, outcomes in open thyroid surgery. While the postoperative time is likely to shape patients' recovery trajectories, its relationship with scar perception and QoL remains unknown. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, adult patients with thyroid cancer who underwent open thyroidectomy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital and two affiliated institutions between 2013 and 2024 were stratified by postoperative interval (POI) (≤1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-5, >5 years). Data were collected from electronic

Vision Fine-Tunes Predictions of Bimanual Self-Touch.

Self-touch is attenuated compared to external touch due to internal forward models predicting the somatosensory consequences of our movements. These self-touch predictions are continuously updated during the movement using the available sensory input, resulting in a precise temporal tuning of somatosensory perception. However, the contributions of different sensory inputs, such as vision, to the predictions of the forward models and thus the resulting modulation of somatosensory perception remain unknown. In this pre-registered study, participants discriminated forces applied to their left ind

Online Collaborative Perception of Full Bridge Deck Driving Visual of Far Blind Area on Suspension Bridge during Vortex-Induced Vibration.

During a vertical vortex-induced vibration (VVIV), an undulating bridge deck will affect drivers' sightlines, causing the phenomenon of drifting and changes in the far blind area, thus presenting a potential threat to driving safety. Consequently, to ensure the safety of driving on a suspension bridge deck under VVIV, it is necessary to perceive the far blind spot caused by the occlusion of the driving sightlines under this condition, and to establish an online perception and evaluation mechanism for driving safety. With a long-span suspension bridge experiencing VVIV as the engineering backgr

Perceptual Adaptation of Lexical Tones Is Degraded but Can Be Improved With Lengthened Stimulus Duration in Musically Tone-Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: The current study investigated how individuals with congenital amusia (or "tone deafness") responded to lexical tones differed in stimulus duration and carried by distinct syllables. METHOD: Amusics were diagnosed to develop the experimental group to participate in an identification task and a discrimination task, with typical, musically intact listeners being the control group. The test stimuli were actual monosyllabic words in Mandarin Chinese, and they varied in stimulus duration (100 and 400 ms) and were presented in the low- and the high-variability conditions (the tone carried

Contralateral Hand and Foot Know the Time Better: Advantages in Temporal Order Judgment and Their Processing Stages.

In real-world scenarios, coordination between the contralateral hand and foot is often required to accomplish basic motor tasks, such as walking or running. Research on active movement has shown that the contralateral hand and foot perform better than the ipsilateral hand and foot in terms of interlimb coordination. However, whether this contralateral advantage extends to passive temporal perception remains unknown. In this study, the contralateral advantage was investigated via a temporal order judgment task using ERP technology. The participants received two sequential tactile stimuli on one

Timing of anticipatory muscle tensing control: responses before and after expected impact.

It is widely accepted that human motor control is anticipatory in nature. Previous studies have used electromyography (EMG) to examine muscle responses to falling objects and identified anticipatory muscle tensing (AMT) as a spike in activation that occurs prior to object impact. Some studies have suggested that humans use an internal model of gravity to mediate precisely timed AMT responses. The present study further examines predictive motor control through the analysis of AMT during an object catching task. For some trials, participants watched an object falling toward the hand; for other t

A visual-haptic Necker cube reveals temporal constraints on intersensory merging during perceptual exploration.

When viewing a three-dimensional Necker cube with one eye, participants can experience illusory reversals even while they feel the cube with their hands. This surprising property of the visual-haptic Necker cube affords a unique opportunity to investigate temporal constraints on interactions between vision and touch during extended observation of a three-dimensional object. Our observers reported reversals while they viewed the cube and, at the same time, they either held it with two-finger grips, felt it with while their hands remained stationary, or actively explored it by moving one hand. Sensory gating in schizophrenics and normal controls: effects of changing stimulation interval.

Auditory evoked potentials were recorded using a paired click, conditioning-testing paradigm in 10 schizophrenics and in 10 normal subjects with no family history of psychotic disorder. The paradigm is used to demonstrate central nervous system gating of responsiveness to auditory stimuli by examining the extent to which the response to the conditioning stimulus diminishes the response to a test stimulus occurring a short time later. Recordings were made at conditioning-testing intervals of 500 msec, 150 msec, and 75 msec to determine subjects' gating of responsiveness to stimuli repeated at v

Frontal evoked γ activity modulates behavioural performance in Autism Spectrum Disorders in a perceptual simultaneity task.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are associated with anomalies in time perception. In a perceptual simultaneity task, individuals with ASD demonstrate superior performance compared to typically developing (TD) controls. γ-activity, a robust marker of visual processing, is reportedly altered in ASD in response to a wide variety of tasks and these differences may be related to superior performance in perceptual simultaneity. Using time-frequency analysis, we assessed evoked γ-band phase-locking in magnetoencephalographic recordings of 16 ASD individuals and 17 age-matched TD controls. Individual…

Assessment of physical fatigability and fatigue perception in myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue includes both performance fatigability and fatigue perception. METHODS: In 32 stable patients with generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) and 17 controls, time-dependent physical performance was assessed by the arm movement test (AMT) and 6-minute walk test (6MWT). MG patients presented with low quantitative MG scores (mean 0.5, SD 0.5) and without pathologic decrement. Fatigability was based on calculation of linear trend (LT) reflecting dynamic performance within subsequent constant time intervals. Perception of physical fatigue was analyzed using fatigue questionnaires.

[Specifics of perception of acoustic image of intrinsic bioelectric brain activity].

We studied the particularities of perception of the acoustic image of intrinsic EEG. We found that the assessment of perception of sounds, the presentation of which was synchronized and was agreed with current bioelectric brain activity, is higher that assessment of perception of acoustic EEG image presented in recorded form. Presentation of recorded acoustic image of EEG is accompanied by increased activity of beta-band in the frontal areas, while real-time presentation of acoustic EEG image is accompanied by the increase of slow wave activity: theta- and delta-bands of occipital areas of the

Nurses' Perceptions of Using Capnography During Resuscitation of Patients in Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Capnography provides real-time data on ventilation by measuring exhaled carbon dioxide. Its use improves patient safety, especially during resuscitation. Despite its clinical value, capnography adoption remains limited in emergency settings in some regions. The aim of this study is to assess nurses' knowledge, experience, and perceptions of capnography use during cardiac arrest resuscitation in emergency departments in North West Bank hospitals. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 96 emergency nurses from 7 governmental hospitals. Data was collected usi

S2R-Bench: A Sim-to-Real Evaluation Benchmark for Autonomous Driving.

Safety is a long-standing and final pursuit in the development of autonomous driving systems, with many safety challenge arising from perception. How to effectively evaluate the safety and reliability of perception algorithms is becoming an emerging issue. Despite its critical importance, existing perception methods exhibit a limitation in their robustness, primarily due to benchmarks being entirely simulated, which fail to align predicted results with actual outcomes, particularly under extreme weather conditions and sensor anomalies that are prevalent in real-world scenarios.
