Eye movements and motion perception during off-vertical axis rotation after spaceflight.

Constant velocity off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) provides dynamic linear acceleration stimuli that can be used to assess otolith function … sponses on landing day, there were no major changes in the tilt ocular reflexes after adaptation to weightlessness. However, there was an increase in sensitivity to motion perception after spaceflight. Direct comparisons of pre- and postflight stimuli suggested that OVAR on landing day was less provocative of motion sickness than before spaceflight. These result …

Study of the Expression of Integrins in Smooth Myocytes of the Gastrointestinal Organs After Space Flight.

Spaceflight has crucial effects on living organisms, primarily due to weightlessness, which causes essential morphofunctional changes in the tissues of almost all body systems. Smooth muscle tissue is one of the main system-forming components of the gastrointestinal tract, which makes its study particularly relevant to space gastroenterology. Integrins are cell adhesion receptors expressed in practically all cell types, including smooth muscle cells. By mediating interactions with the extracellular matrix and intercellular signaling, smooth muscle cell integrins actively participate in adaptat…

Gravity as a contextual control parameter in coordination dynamics: Phase-specific stability during parabolic flight.

Coordination dynamics provides a theoretical framework for understanding how stable patterns of coordinated action emerge, stabilize, and change under varying conditions as a result of the interaction between neuromuscular, environmental, and task constraints. The Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) model predicts that when coordinating actions between two limbs, in-phase (0°) is the most stable coordination mode, anti-phase (180°) is less stable, and 90° is unstable, reflecting the attractor-repeller architecture of the coordination landscape. Although sensory factors such as visual and tactile feedback h

Reproductive biomedicine in space: implications for gametogenesis, fertility and ethical considerations in the era of commercial spaceflight.

As the era of commercial and frequent spaceflight advances, the question of human fertility in space is no longer theoretical but urgently practical. Despite over 65 years of human spaceflight activities, little is known of the impact of the space environment on the human reproductive systems during long-duration missions. Extended time in space poses potential hazards to the reproductive function of female and male astronauts, including exposure to cosmic radiation, altered gravity, psychological and physical stress, and disruption to circadian rhythm. This review encapsulates current underst

PIEZO1 Mediates Myoblast Proliferation Under Simulated Microgravity.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is a major health risk of prolonged spaceflight, yet how microgravity reshapes muscle cells through mechanotransduction remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the mechanosensitive cation channel PIEZO1 in myoblast proliferation under simulated microgravity. Using a two-dimensional clinostat combined with Hi-C-based 3D genomics, transcriptomics, and functional assays, we found that simulated microgravity promotes C2C12 myoblast proliferation and upregulates Piezo1. Piezo1 mRNA knockdown reduced both proliferation and depolarization-induced Ca2 + influx, each partia

The case for anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) for the international space station and future planetary spaceflight: Clinical relevance and technical implementation.

Spaceflight presents unique challenges to ocular health which must be addressed when considering future long-term missions to Mars and beyond, specifically with increased risk to the anterior segment of the eye. While the posterior segment has been heavily researched via examinations with Heidelberg's Spectralis Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)2 Module aboard the International Space Station (ISS), evaluation of the anterior segment is not as extensively performed. Despite the capabilities of the Spectralis, which allows for anterior segment imaging via the Anterior Segment Module (ASM), tran

Changes of iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow under partial gravity condition in mice.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of the space age, research on physiological changes during long-term space missions has become increasingly important. Spaceflight-induced anemia, along with muscle and bone loss, is a significant concern for astronaut health, potentially disrupting iron metabolism and absorption. However, the mechanisms underlying intestinal iron absorption in space remain unclear. AIM: This study investigated iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow of mice exposed to partial gravity (PG) to assess potential alterations in iron absorption and storage. METHODS: Using sa

The ocular surface during spaceflight: Post-mission symptom report, extraterrestrial risks, and in-flight therapeutics.

Ocular health is critical for overall astronaut health requirements given its essential role for mission performance and safety. The ocular surface is a vital structure to the visual system and is essential for ocular protection and the refraction of light for focused vision. Data from the 2024 NASA Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health identified that Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS) astronauts (N = 257) queried during post-flight eye exams reported symptoms of eye irritation (34 %), dry eyes (14 %), and foreign body sensation (21 %). Given these findings, it is critica

Effects of microgravity on human iPSC-derived neural organoids on the International Space Station.

Research conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) in low-Earth orbit (LEO) has shown the effects of microgravity on multiple organs. To investigate the effects of microgravity on the central nervous system, we developed a unique organoid strategy for modeling specific regions of the brain that are affected by neurodegenerative diseases. We generated 3-dimensional human neural organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from individuals affected by primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) or Parkinson's disease (PD) and non-symptomatic controls, by differentiati

Effects of a microgravity SkinSuit on lumbar geometry and kinematics.

PURPOSE: Astronauts returning from long ISS missions have demonstrated an increased incidence of lumbar disc herniation accompanied by biomechanical and morphological changes associated with spine elongation. This research describes a ground-based study of the effects of an axial compression countermeasure Mk VI SkinSuit designed to reload the spine and reduce these changes before return to terrestrial gravity. METHODS: Twenty healthy male volunteers aged 21-36 without back pain participated. Each lay overnight on a Hyper Buoyancy Flotation (HBF) bed for 12 h on two occasions 6 weeks apart. O

Intraocular pressure and choroidal thickness respond differently to lower body negative pressure during spaceflight.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) develops during long-duration (>1 mo) spaceflight presumably because of chronic exposure to a headward fluid shift that occurs in weightlessness. We aimed to determine whether reversing this headward fluid shift with acute application of lower body negative pressure (LBNP) can influence outcome measures at the eye. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and subfoveal choroidal thickness were therefore evaluated by tonometry and optical coherence tomography (OCT), respectively, in 14 International Space Station crewmembers before flight in the seated, sup…

Previous exposure to simulated microgravity does not exacerbate bone loss during subsequent exposure in the proximal tibia of adult rats.

Extended periods of inactivity cause severe bone loss and concomitant deterioration of the musculoskeletal system. Considerable research has been aimed at better understanding the mechanisms and consequences of bone loss due to unloading and the associated effects on strength and fracture risk. One factor that has not been studied extensively but is of great interest, particularly for human spaceflight, is how multiple or repeated exposures to unloading and reloading affect the skeleton. Space agencies worldwide anticipate increased usage of repeat-flier crewmembers, and major thrust of resear

[The effect of space flight on metabolism: the results of biochemical research in rat experiments on the Kosmos biosatellites].

Cosmos biosatellites research program was the unique possibility to study the metabolic features influenced by space flight factors. Based on the existing ideas about relationships between some metabolic responses, the state of metabolism and the systems of its control in the rats flown in space was evaluated to differentiate the processes occurred in microgravity, possibly under effect of this factor and during first postflight hours. The biochemical results of studying the rats exposed to space environments during 7, 14, 18.5 and 19.5 days and sacrificed 4-11 h after landing (Cosmos-782, -93

The effective intensity of Coriolis, cross-coupling stimulation is gravitoinertial force dependent: implications for space motion sickness.

Coriolis, cross-coupled angular acceleration stimulation readily induces motion sickness under terrestrial conditions. Nevertheless, the Skylab astronauts, when tested with such stimulation in-flight, were insusceptible even though each had been susceptible pre-flight. It is unclear whether this decreased susceptibility was the consequence of in-flight adaptation or in part the result of immediate changes in sensory-motor and vestibulo-motor function that occur during exposure to microgravity conditions. To evaluate this issue, we have tested individuals both in the high and low force phases o

NASA SPRINT exercise program efficacy for vastus lateralis and soleus skeletal muscle health during 70 days of simulated microgravity.

The efficacy of the NASA SPRINT exercise countermeasures program for quadriceps (vastus lateralis) and triceps surae (soleus) skeletal muscle health was investigated during 70 days of simulated microgravity. Individuals completed 6° head-down-tilt bedrest (BR, n = 9), bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise (BRE, n = 9), or bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise and low-dose testosterone (BRE + T, n = 8). All groups were periodically tested for muscle (n = 9 times) and aerobic (n = 4 times) power during bedrest. In BR, surprisingly, the typical bedrest-induced decrements in vastus l

Responses of neuromuscular systems under gravity or microgravity environment.

Hindlimb suspension of rats induces induces fiber atrophy and type shift of muscle fibers. In contrast, there is no change in the cell size or oxidative enzyme activity of spinal motoneurons innervating muscle fibers. Growth-related increases in the cell size of muscle fibers and their spinal motoneurons are inhibited by hindlimb suspension. Exposure to microgravity induces atrophy of fibers (especially slow-twitch fibers) and shift of fibers from slow- to fast-twitch type in skeletal muscles (especially slow, anti-gravity muscles). In addition, a decrease in the oxidative enzyme activity of s

NASA' s life sciences and space radiation biology.

Plans for the various missions in which men and women are expected to participate during the next 10 years are outlined. Such missions include flights of up to three months duration in low earth orbit as well as possible short excursions to geosynchronous orbit. Research activities are described which cover the full spectrum of physiological and psychological responses to space flight. These activities are shown to contribute to the ongoing Shuttle program and the future Space Station. The paper includes a summary of the major technical thrusts needed to support extended habitation in space.
