Ovotestes and XY sex reversal in a female with an interstitial 9q33.3-q34.1 deletion encompassing NR5A1 and LMX1B causing features of Genitopatellar syndrome.

We describe our findings in a 46,XY female with a clinical features of Genitopatellar syndrome (GPS) and confirmed hermaphroditism with ovotestes, and five additional patients with GPS. GPS is a genetic disorder characterized by renal and genital anomalies, joint dislocation, aplastic or hypoplastic and often displaced patellae, minor facial anomalies, and mental retardation. The genital anomalies clearly distinguish GPS from nail-patella syndrome (NPS) that has similar features, but additionally shows hypoplastic finger- and toenails as found in the 46,XY female. In our patients no mutation w

Repetitive strain injury. 2. Diagnostic and treatment tips on six common problems. The Goff Group.

Repetitive strain injury is caused by recurrent overuse, resulting in microtrauma to tissues. Local pain and tenderness, weakness, inflammation, and limited function are common findings. Some of the strain injuries seen most often are carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, shoulder impingement syndrome, tennis elbow, thoracic outlet syndrome, and myofascial pain disorders. Often, treatment can be started at the initial visit, after systemic disorders have been ruled out. A vital step is elimination of aggravating factors, such as improper posture, inadequate attention to ergonomic factors at

Paeoniflorin Ameliorates Osteoarthritis via Ring Finger Protein 216/Optineurin-Mediated Autophagy Activation in Chondrocytes.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disorder. Paeoniflorin (PF), a primary bioactive compound from Paeonia lactiflora roots, demonstrates therapeutic potential for OA. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of PF in OA. In vitro, an OA model was established using interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-treated chondrocytes. In vivo, an OA mouse model was generated via destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM). Molecular docking, bioinformatics analysis, and experimental validation identified ring finger protein 216 (RNF216) as a PF target. RNF216 overexpression and optineurin (

Ultrasound-guided release of the fibro-osseous tunnels around the wrist and hand: a technical review.

Fibro-osseous tunnels allow the unhindered passage of the neurovascular bundle and sliding tendons across the mobile joint. Release of the fibro-osseous tunnels is performed for entrapment neuropathy and stenosing tenosynovitis which occur as a result of increase in the volume/pressure within these tunnels. The common surgical principle in all these pathologies is releasing the pressure by transecting the fascial covering. Primarily these pathologies are treated with open surgery but are potentially amenable to curative percutaneous ultrasound (US)-guided release procedures. US is the preferab

Intratendinous ganglion cyst of extensor indicis propius tendon: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The intratendinous ganglion cyst is an extremely rare entity. Thus, the global incidence has not been reported yet. The literature search showed scarce case reports and none has reported its occurrence in extensor indicis propius (EIP) tendon. The benign nature and the region at the dorsal hand mimic to the more common dorsal wrist ganglion. However, the surgical treatment arises significant risk to the function and may require subsequent tendon graft or tendon transfer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old-female presented with 4 years history of a slow-growing lump

Mechanically Induced Anisotropic Fragments in Sn-Doped In2O3 Nanoparticle Films for Flexible Strain Sensing Based on Surface Plasmons.

Recently, mechanical strain sensors have been extensively developed to quantify large mechanical deformations for stretchable and wearable applications. In this study, we propose a plasmonic strain sensor based on the mechanical control of optical properties using an assembled film comprising In2O3: Sn nanoparticles (ITO NP film). The resonant reflectance in the infrared range could effectively be tuned by applying strain to the ITO NP film deposited on an elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheet. The change in reflectance was caused by the mechanical deformation of the PDMS sheet. The op

The Use of Medicinal Leeches for the Treatment of Venous Congestion in Replanted or Revascularized Digits.

PURPOSE: A noteworthy cause of failure in digital replantation is venous insufficiency. External bloodletting with medicinal leeches is a common treatment for venous insufficiency after distal digital replantations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the salvage rate of digits replanted proximal to the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint that were treated with medicinal leeches for venous congestion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients with complete or incomplete digit amputation admitted between January, 2008 and April, 2014. We included all patients with veno

Clinical Presentation, Surgical Treatment, and Outcome in Radial Polydactyly.

Radial polydactyly or 'thumb duplication' is the most common congenital upper limb anomaly ('CULA') affecting the thumb. The clinical presentation is highly diverse, ranging from an extra thumb floating on a skin bridge to complicated thumb triplications with triphalangeal, deviating, and hypoplastic components. Radial polydactyly can be classified into one of 7 osseous presentations using the Wassel classification, with type IV (45%), type II (20%), and type VII (15%) occurring most frequently. When faced with a radial polydactyly case, hand surgeons specialised in congenital anomalies must w

Haptically facilitated bimanual training combined with augmented visual feedback in moderate to severe hemiplegia.

This study describes the design and feasibility testing of a hand rehabilitation system that provides haptic assistance for hand opening in moderate to severe hemiplegia while subjects attempt to perform bilateral hand movements. A cable-actuated exoskeleton robot assists the subjects in performing impaired finger movements but is controlled by movement of the unimpaired hand. In an attempt to combine the neurophysiological stimuli of bilateral movement and action observation during training, visual feedback of the impaired hand is replaced by feedback of the unimpaired hand, either by using a

[Pattern of paralysis and reconstructive operations after traumatic brachial plexus lesions].

The aim of this study was to evaluate persistent patterns of paralysis after traumatic brachial plexus lesions. As a result, consecutive reconstructive operations according to our differential therapy concept are presented. Between 04/1994 and 12/2000 in 104 patients with brachial plexus palsy, the grade of muscle power of the affected upper extremities was evaluated prospectively. The neuromuscular patterns of defect showed, in most cases, insufficient muscle power grades of 0-2 for the deltoid muscle (90%), supraspinatus muscle (82%), infraspinatus muscle (93%), elbow flexors (67% to 77%), h

Three-dimensional computed tomography imaging: its applicability in the evaluation of extensor tendons in the hand and wrist.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) imaging with volume rendering can accurately evaluate extensor tendons in the hand and wrist. METHODS: Three-dimensional CT imaging was used to evaluate 14 cases. The location where the rupture was suspected was the wrist level in all cases. The accuracy of the image diagnosis was confirmed during surgery in 13 cases. RESULTS: Three-dimensional CT could identify all extensor tendons proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint. In the cases with rupture, the location of the distal stump cou
