Constraints and adaptations in crocodyliform skull evolution.

Crocodyliforms display a diverse range of skull morphologies through their evolutionary history. Extant crocodilians possess platyrostral (broad and flat) snouts, thought to be sub-optimal for resisting feeding loads due to the conflicting demands of feeding and hydrodynamic constraints. In contrast, numerous Mesozoic crocodyliforms possessed oreinirostral (dome-shaped) skulls, were terrestrial and hence free from hydrodynamic constraint. This study aims to examine the role of function in determining skull shape in crocodyliforms and assesses the difference in stress resistance between oreinir

Population History and Gene Divergence in Native Mexicans Inferred from 76 Human Exomes.

Native American genetic variation remains underrepresented in most catalogs of human genome sequencing data. Previous genotyping efforts have revealed that Mexico's Indigenous population is highly differentiated and substructured, thus potentially harboring higher proportions of private genetic variants of functional and biomedical relevance. Here we have targeted the coding fraction of the genome and characterized its full site frequency spectrum by sequencing 76 exomes from five Indigenous populations across Mexico. Using diffusion approximations, we modeled the demographic history of Indige

Making the cut: mechanics of cutting and steering of insect probes.

Many insects forage, oviposit or inject venom in their prey by penetrating or cutting through substrates. From a physical perspective, cutting involves creation of new free surfaces. The cutting parts of insects, such as their mandibles or ovipositor tips, are often zinc-enriched and hardened as compared to the other cuticular regions. Whereas tip hardening is key to their ability to penetrate surfaces, it is often also important for probes to be maneuverable through substrates. How do insect probes negotiate the trade-off between cutting and steering through substrates of diverse stiffness? T

Ectoparasite defence in humans: relationships to pathogen avoidance and clinical implications.

Currently, disgust is regarded as the main adaptation for defence against pathogens and parasites in humans. Disgust's motivational and behavioural features, including withdrawal, nausea, appetite suppression and the urge to vomit, defend effectively against ingesting or touching sources of pathogens. However, ectoparasites do not attack their hosts via ingestion, but rather actively attach themselves to the body surface. Accordingly, by itself, disgust offers limited defence against ectoparasites. We propose that, like non-human animals, humans have a distinct ectoparasite defence system that

Piercing Fishes: Porin Expansion and Adaptation to Hematophagy in the Vampire Snail Cumia reticulata.

Cytolytic pore-forming proteins are widespread in living organisms, being mostly involved in both sides of the host-pathogen interaction, either contributing to the innate defense or promoting infection. In venomous organisms, such as spiders, insects, scorpions, and sea anemones, pore-forming proteins are often secreted as key components of the venom. Coluporins are pore-forming proteins recently discovered in the Mediterranean hematophagous snail Cumia reticulata (Colubrariidae), highly expressed in the salivary glands that discharge their secretion at close contact with the host. To underst

Vascularization in Ornamented Osteoderms: Physiological Implications in Ectothermy and Amphibious Lifestyle in the Crocodylomorphs?

Vascularization in the core of crocodylian osteoderms, and in their superficial pits has been hypothesized to be a key feature involved in physiological thermoregulation and/or acidosis buffering during anoxia (apnea). However, up to now, there have been no quantitative data showing that the inner, or superficial, blood supply of the osteoderms is greater than that occurring in neighboring dermal tissues. We provide such data: our results clearly indicate that the vascular networks in both the osteoderms and the pits forming their superficial ornamentation are denser than in the overlying derm

Is Predominant Clonal Evolution a Common Evolutionary Adaptation to Parasitism in Pathogenic Parasitic Protozoa, Fungi, Bacteria, and Viruses?

We propose that predominant clonal evolution (PCE) in microbial pathogens be defined as restrained recombination on an evolutionary scale, with genetic exchange scarce enough to not break the prevalent pattern of clonal population structure. The main features of PCE are (1) strong linkage disequilibrium, (2) the widespread occurrence of stable genetic clusters blurred by occasional bouts of genetic exchange ('near-clades'), (3) the existence of a "clonality threshold", beyond which recombination is efficiently countered by PCE, and near-clades irreversibly diverge. We hypothesize that the PCE

Demographic shifts related to mycoheterotrophy and their fitness impacts in two Cephalanthera species.

Evolutionary losses of photosynthesis in terrestrial plants all originate in photosynthetic ancestors. The adaptive context under which this transition happens has remained elusive because of the rarity of plants in which both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic forms exist as a polymorphism. Here, we report on demographic patterns in photosynthetic ("green") and nonphotosynthetic ("albino") individuals within populations of two such species, Cephalanthera damasonium and C. longifolia, which also acquire nutrition from their mycorrhizal hosts (partial mycoheterotrophy). We hypothesized that

Functional morphology and kinematics of terrestrial feeding in the largescale foureyes (Anableps anableps).

A major challenge for aquatic vertebrates that invade land is feeding in the terrestrial realm. The capacity of the gape to become parallel with the ground has been shown to be a key factor to allow fishes to feed on prey lying on a terrestrial surface. To do so, two strategies have been identified that involve a nose-down tilting of the head: (1) by pivoting on the pectoral fins as observed in mudskippers, and (2) curling of the anterior part of the body supported by a long and flexible eel-like body as shown in eel-catfish. Although Anableps anableps successfully feeds on land, it does not p

Organizational changes to thyroid regulation in Alligator mississippiensis: evidence for predictive adaptive responses.

During embryonic development, organisms are sensitive to changes in thyroid hormone signaling which can reset the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. It has been hypothesized that this developmental programming is a 'predictive adaptive response', a physiological adjustment in accordance with the embryonic environment that will best aid an individual's survival in a similar postnatal environment. When the embryonic environment is a poor predictor of the external environment, the developmental changes are no longer adaptive and can result in disease states. We predicted that endocrine disrupti

The inter-group comparison-intra-group cooperation hypothesis: comparisons between groups increase efficiency in public goods provision.

Identifying methods to increase cooperation and efficiency in public goods provision is of vital interest for human societies. The methods that have been proposed often incur costs that (more than) destroy the efficiency gains through increased cooperation. It has for example been shown that inter-group conflict increases intra-group cooperation, however at the cost of collective efficiency. We propose a new method that makes use of the positive effects associated with inter-group competition but avoids the detrimental (cost) effects of a structural conflict. We show that the mere comparison t

Inhibition of cadmium ion uptake in rice (Oryza sativa) cells by a wall-bound form of silicon.

The stresses acting on plants that are alleviated by silicon (Si) range from biotic to abiotic stresses, such as heavy metal toxicity. However, the mechanism of stress alleviation by Si at the single-cell level is poorly understood. We cultivated suspended rice (Oryza sativa) cells and protoplasts and investigated them using a combination of plant nutritional and physical techniques including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We found that most Si accumulated in the cell walls

New insights to the immunopathology and autoimmune responses in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an autoimmune liver disease with profound changes in different compartments of the immune system, including those involved in innate, and adaptive immunity. New data from epidemiological studies of PBC have reinforced the thesis that the cause for this relatively uncommon disease is likely to be a combination of both environmental factors and a susceptible genetic predisposition. Recent findings of abnormalities of the innate immune system in PBC suggest that they may serve as links between the environmental factors and the early events in PBC development. Vi

Freeze, flight, fight, fright, faint: adaptationist perspectives on the acute stress response spectrum.

This article reviews the existing evolutionary perspectives on the acute stress response habitual faintness and blood-injection-injury type-specific phobia (BIITS phobia). In this article, an alternative evolutionary perspective, based on recent advances in evolutionary psychology, is proposed. Specifically, that fear-induced faintness (eg, fainting following the sight of a syringe, blood, or following a trivial skin injury) is a distinct Homo sapiens-specific extreme-stress survival response to an inescapable threat. The article suggests that faintness evolved in response to middle paleolithi

Studies of the phenomenon of host adaptation in Salmonella.

To study the phenomenon of host adaptation in Salmonella, a mathematical model has been developed which permits a definition and experimental investigation of the specific interaction between the adapted serovar and the adequate host. After experimental infection using a mixture of equal parts of two Salmonella strains, A and B, the bacterial concentrations CA and CB were determined in the organs of the animals infected. If an animal of species a and an animal of species b are infected with the same mixture of strain A adapted to a and strain B adapted to b, an expression: log10Qab = log10CaA

Adpatations for urinary marking in rodents: prepuce length and morphology.

Urine marking was examined in house mice, deermice, gerbils and hamsters. The frequency of urine deposition varied with the species, and a correlation is suggested between the propensity of males to mark in this fashion and prepuce length and morphology. We postulate an adaptational advantage for a long penis sheath and for a particular configuration of the prepuce; i.e. to act as a wick for the deposition of urinary pheromones.

Extracellular vesicles in human fungal pathogens: Biogenesis, functions, and translational applications.

Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as critical mediators of fungal physiology, virulence, and host-pathogen interactions. Since their first description in Cryptococcus neoformans, EVs have been identified in several fungal species and shown to transport a broad repertoire of bioactive cargo. Increasing evidence indicates that fungal EVs participate in multiple biological processes, including cell wall remodeling, stress adaptation, biofilm formation, antifungal resistance, and modulation of host immune responses. Recent advances in cryo-electron microscopy, multi-omics approaches

TREM2⁺ tumor-associated macrophages in cancer: Context-dependent biology, biomarkers, and precision immunotherapy.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are abundant and functionally important components of the tumor microenvironment (TME), yet the molecular programs that distinguish pathogenic macrophage states from tissue-adaptive populations remain incompletely defined. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) has emerged as a key marker of specialized immunoregulatory macrophage states across multiple solid tumors. Accumulating evidence links TREM2⁺ macrophages to metabolic adaptation, immune evasion, and impaired antitumor immunity, although their biological functions vary substantially

mTOR signaling in aging: from causality to geroprotective interventions and hallmark-level outcomes.

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is an important integrator of processes involved in aging and longevity, coordinating nutrient sensing, metabolic adaptation, and cellular stress responses. This review presents a three-section framework in which mTOR functions as a dynamic signaling hub coordinating multiple biological processes underlying the aging process. Evidence from genetic, experimental, and translational studies supports a causal role for mTOR signaling in lifespan regulation in model organisms, whereas human data remain predominantly associative but biologically cons
