The extensive use of copper and booster biocides in antifouling (AF) paints has raised environmental concerns and the need to develop new AF agents. In the present study, 18 alkaloids derived from terrestrial plants were initially evaluated for AF activity using laboratory bioassays with the bryozoan Bugula neritina and the barnacle Balanus albicostatus. TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Graves' disease (GD), and its levels correlate with the clinical course. The second- and third-generation TRAb assays have >95% sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of GD and have improved the utility of TRAb to predict relapse. In 19 patients with various prostatic diseases, serum and prostatic tissue levels of tobramycin were determined by bioassay and enzyme immunoassay after 1, 3 or 4 intramuscular injections of 75 mg tobramycin. The last injection was given ninety minutes prior to prostatectomy. Mean serum and prostatic tissue levels were respectively 3.55 micrograms/ml and 1.70 micrograms/g by bioassay, and 3.55 micrograms/ml and 2.37 micrograms/g by enzyme immunoassay. There was no significant difference in prostatic tissue levels between patients who received 3 or 4 drug doses and those who received one dose.

Bacillus megaterium strain ATCC 19213 secretes a ferric-chelating secondary hydroxamic acid, whereas a mutant (strain SK11) derived from it cannot produce a hydroxamate. Vitamin B(12) levels in erythrocytes were low in untreated hypochromic anaemia, rose to abnormally high levels during therapy with iron alone, and finally slowly fell to normal. These changes were similar to those previously found in pernicious anaemia in response to vitamin B(12) therapy and in folate-deficiency anaemia in response to folic acid, thus changes in erythrocyte B(12) levels are not always due directly to changes in B(12) metabolism but may be secondary to changes in the levels of other haematinic factors.
