Regenerative Neurology and Regenerative Cardiology: Shared Hurdles and Achievements.

From the first success in cultivation of cells in vitro, it became clear that developing cell and/or tissue specific cultures would open a m … ent needs and place various types of hurdles on the path of regenerative neurology and regenerative cardiology. In this review, written by European experts gathered in Cost European action dedicated to neurology and cardiology-Bioneca, we present the experience acquired by working on two rather different organs: the brain and the heart. When taken into accou …

Noninvasive Imaging in Interventional Cardiology: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a spectrum of left heart underdevelopment leaving the left side unable to support the systemic circulation. If active management is pursued, then the condition is managed with staged palliation to the Fontan circulation, leaving a systemic right ventricle. Through all surgical stages, and even after completion of Fontan, there are multiple areas that may require intervention, most frequently the branch pulmonary arteries which are essential to a successful Fontan circulation. Echocardiography is the mainstay of assessment, but there is an increasing us

[Medico-legal implications of infections during interventionnal cardiology procedure].

Nosocomial infections in interventional cardiology are rare, but their extreme severity is responsible for medico-legal issues. By the will of the legislator, it should be understood that, as soon as the nosocomial nature of an infection has been recognized, the victims will almost systematically obtain compensation. The payer will be determined by the level of seriousness of the infection and the existence or not of a possible fault. To avoid a conviction, the care teams must compel themselves to respect the recommendations of the professional societies, but also to ensure a perfect traceabil…

Quantitative clinical nuclear cardiology, part 2: Evolving/emerging applications.

Quantitative analysis has been applied extensively to image processing and interpretation in nuclear cardiology to improve disease diagnosis and risk stratification. This is Part 2 of a two-part continuing medical education article, which will review the potential clinical role for emerging quantitative analysis tools. The article will describe advanced methods for quantifying dyssynchrony, ventricular function and perfusion, and hybrid imaging analysis. This article discusses evolving methods to measure myocardial blood flow with positron emission tomography and single-photon emission compute…

Predicting Quality of Clinical Performance From Cardiology Fellowship Applications.

Variables in cardiology fellowship applications have not been objectively analyzed against applicants' subsequent clinical performance. We investigated possible correlations in a retrospective cohort study of 65 cardiology fellows at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn) who began 2 years of clinical training from July 2007 through July 2013. Application variables included the strength of comparative statements in recommendation letters and the authors' academic ranks, membership status in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, awards earned, volunteer activities, United States Medical Licen…

Rationale and Best Practices for Pediatric Cardiology Prevention Programs.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in North America, and a significant number of children have conditions such as inherited dyslipidemias, overweight/obesity, and hypertension, placing them at increased risk for future cardiovascular events and other comorbidities. Training in cardiovascular prevention is an important tool to help pediatric cardiologists address these issues in children. We describe a model for training pediatric cardiologists in primary and secondary prevention strategies. A multidisciplinary team approach is needed for robust training

Recurrent Cardiology Evaluation for Innocent Heart Murmur: Echocardiogram Utilization.

We conducted a retrospective study to identify electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram utilization among patients presenting for a follow-up cardiology evaluation with innocent heart murmur between 2012 and 2014. The 2014 echocardiogram Appropriate Use Criteria was applied. We observed high rates of ordering ECGs and echocardiograms on follow-up visits (79% and 36%); only 1 patient had an appropriate indication for echocardiogram while the rest had rarely appropriate indication. Having had an ECG done did not affect echocardiogram ordering behavior. Older patient age was the only factor ass…

Acute coronary syndrome registry at a cardiology emergency center.

OBJECTIVE: Describe clinical characteristics of patients (P) admitted to hospital with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), identifying medical treatment and in-hospital mortality. METHODS: Evaluated were 860 patients with ACS from January through December, 2003. We evaluated baseline characteristics, ACS mode of presentation, medication during hospital stay, indication for clinical treatment or myocardial revascularization (MR) and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Five hundred and three (58.3%) were male, mean age 62.6 years ( +/- 11.9). Seventy-eight (9.1%) were discharged with the diag

[Platelet activation in cardiology: methods, indications and therapeutic perspectives].

Platelet activation and/or platelet reactivity have been reported to be associated with coronary heart disease. Whole blood flow cytometry allows to analyze platelets in their physiological environment, while other assays need platelet separation, susceptible to induce platelet modifications. But flow cytometric assay also have limitations. We studied preanalytical conditions in healthy volunteers, using two monoclonal antibodies directed against CD62 and CD63 (two specific markers of platelet degranulation), and two markers which recognize GPIIb/IIIa activation (PAC1 and bound fibrinogen).
