The prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders in the chinese air force population.

Background. Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common in the general population worldwide. However, there is paucity of large sale surveys for prevalence of FGID in the military personnel. Methods. It is a cross-sectional study, using Rome III criteria for the diagnosis of FGID among the Chinese Air Force (CAF) workers. Results. Of 4633 registered male subjects, there were 818 (16.4%) air crew and 4170 (83.6%) ground personnel. FGIDs were identified in 1088 (23.48%) of cases. It was more prevalent in the ground personnel than air crew (24.02% versus 20.33%; P = 0.022). Based on

Epidemiology of occupational injuries and illnesses in a university population: a focus on age and gender differences.

BACKGROUND: Occupational injuries and illnesses are a major preventable public health problem. METHODS: This study evaluated the incidence, nature, and cause of awarded workers' compensation claims for a large state university and teaching hospital. Rates and types of injury were compared across age and gender. RESULTS: Rates of injury varied over twofold with age, with those 16-25 having the lowest rates of injury and those 36-45 having the highest rates. Claims rates were 1.36-fold higher for women than men. Women had higher rates for injury resulting from lifting, falling, noxious exposur

Tofacitinib as a Successful Treatment for Hyper-IgE Syndrome and Autoimmunity Associated with Constitutive Activation of JAK3.

The Janus Kinase 3 (JAK3) germline gain-of-function (GOF) mutation is a rare inborn error of immunity, first reported in 2020, characterized by lymphopenia and chronic NK-cell proliferation. However, its role in autoimmunity remains unclear, and no direct association with hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) has been established. In this study, we describe a patient presenting with HIES, myositis, lymphopenia, and autoimmune hypothyroidism. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel compound heterozygous JAK3 mutation (c.2524_2525delinsTT and c.2805G > C), predicted to be deleterious. Flow cytometry and R

Pediatric hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome: A case series of 4 children in China.

Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndromes (HIES) are rare primary immunodeficiency diseases characterized by markedly elevated serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E, recurrent pneumonia, and chronic eczema. To date, information about pediatric HIES is limited. We aimed to evaluate the spectrum of clinical and immunological features in pediatric patients with HIES in China. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 4 pediatric patients with HIES followed at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center from May 2013 to September 2017. We analyzed clinical presentation, laboratory data, immunological evaluations,

Hyper-IgE syndrome with a novel STAT3 mutation-a single center study from India.

BACKGROUND: Hyper IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder characterized by the triad of elevated IgE and eosinophilia, eczema and recurrent skin and pulmonary infections. Mutation in the STAT3 gene accounts for majority of the autosomal dominant and sporadic forms of HIES. OBJECTIVE: To report clinical and molecular analyses of patients with Hyper IgE syndrome from a single tertiary care center in India. METHODS: Four patients with suspected HIES were studied. Flowcytometry for T(H)17 cell numbers and phosphoSTAT3, and STAT3 gene sequencing were performed. RESULTS: T

Insights into the role of STAT3 in human lymphocyte differentiation as revealed by the hyper-IgE syndrome.

"Experiments of nature" due to single gene mutations resulting in human immunodeficiency states have revealed critical roles for several genes in regulating lymphocyte development and the generation of protective immunity. Recently, heterozygous mutations in STAT3 were found to cause autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome, a condition affecting not only the immune system but also other mesenchymal and ectodermal tissues, including bones, cranium, teeth, and skin. STAT proteins operate to integrate signals from surface receptors, including cytokine receptors, that regulate growth and differentia

Index of suspicion.

Age, genetics, and chromosomal sex have been identified as critical risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). The predominant genetic risk factor for LOAD is the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE4), and the prevalence of LOAD is higher in females. However, the translational validity of APOE4 mouse models for AD-related cognitive impairment remains to be fully determined. The present study investigated the role of both sex and genotype on learning and memory in aged, humanized APOE knock-in mice. Aged (23.27 mo ± 1.21 mo; 39 male/37 female) APOE3/3, APOE3/4, and APOE4/4 mice perfor

[Loss of an eye due to hyper-IgE syndrome after corneal transplantation].

A 37-year-old patient with bilateral keratoconus underwent a perforating cornea transplantation after acute onset of pain and hydrops of the right cornea. One day after operation endophthalmitis developed, caused by a viridans streptococcus. Hyper-IgE syndrome was suspected because of the patient's crude facial features. His medical history brought up additional symptoms of this disease. IgE levels were extremely elevated (7320 kU/l), the eosinophil count was slightly raised (0.25 x 10(9)/l). The patient was treated with several local antibiotics but his vision was only light perception at the

Sensitization to Aspergillus species in the congenital neutrophil disorders chronic granulomatous disease and hyper-IgE syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hyper-IgE syndrome (HIE) and chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) are congenital immunodeficiency diseases with increased susceptibility to bacterial and fungal infections. Both carry significant morbidity and mortality rates because of invasive infections by Aspergillus species. We encountered 2 patients, one with HIE and one with CGD, in whom detection of sensitization to Aspergillus species preceded the diagnosis of immunodeficiency. With high-dose systemic corticosteroids for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), an inflammatory disorder caused by sensitization to Aspe

Flammer syndrome.

The new term Flammer syndrome describes a phenotype characterized by the presence of primary vascular dysregulation together with a cluster of symptoms and signs that may occur in healthy people as well as people with disease. Typically, the blood vessels of the subjects with Flammer syndrome react differently to a number of stimuli, such as cold and physical or emotional stress. Nearly all organs, particularly the eye, can be involved. Although the syndrome has some advantages, such as protection against the development of atherosclerosis, Flammer syndrome also contributes to certain diseases

Atopic dermatitis in children: clinical features, pathophysiology, and treatment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing, highly pruritic skin condition resulting from disruption of the epithelial barrier and associated immune dysregulation in the skin of genetically predisposed hosts. AD generally develops in early childhood, has a characteristic age-dependent distribution and is commonly associated with elevated IgE, peripheral eosinophilia, and other allergic diseases. Medications such as antihistamines have demonstrated poor efficacy in controlling AD-associated itch. Education of patients regarding the primary underlying defects and provision of a comprehensive

A Clinical Study of the Modified Thread Carpal Tunnel Release.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that the thread carpal tunnel release (TCTR) is a safe and effective technique. Through a study on 11 cadaveric wrists, the TCTR procedure was modified and the needle control accuracy was improved to 0.15 to 0.2 mm, which is precise enough to preserve superficial palmar aponeurosis (SupPA), Berrettini branch, and common digital nerves. The aim of the present study was to verify the modified TCTR clinically. METHODS: The modified TCTR was performed on 159 hands of 116 patients. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire was used for assessing th

Occupation and mortality related to alcohol, drugs and sexual habits.

BACKGROUND: To identify opportunities for targeted prevention, we explored differences in occupational mortality from diseases and injuries related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits and drug abuse. METHODS: Using data on all deaths among men and women aged 16-74 years in England and Wales during 1991-2000, we derived age- and social class-standardized proportional mortality ratios (PMRs) by occupation for cause of death categories defined a priori as potentially related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits or drug abuse. RESULTS: The highest mortality from alcohol-related diseases and i

Stressful life experiences and mental health symptoms in adults with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a robust predictor of later mental health symptoms in the general population, and set individuals up for stressful life events in adulthood. There is a paucity of research on whether these associations are also observed in adults with Down syndrome. The current study examined the prevalence of ACEs and their association with later adult stressful life events and mental health symptoms in a cohort of adults with Down syndrome (n = 157). METHODS: A family member or caregiver who was familiar with the adult with Down syndrome's history and cur
