Mastoidectomy surgery was 2.5 times more frequently performed and pressure equalizing (PE) tube insertion was about 15 times more frequently performed in hearing disability patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Hearing disability is related to higher risks of mortality, sudden …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the surgical treatment and related experience of lateral skull base lesions.
METHODS: In a retrospective, clinical data analysis of 20 patients with lateral skull base diseases, 11 cases with temporal bone space-occupying lesions and intracranial invasion were treated by translabyrinthine surgery, mastoid cavity drainage, or transmastoid surgery to remove the lesion; two cases of cholesteatoma with destruction of tympanic cavity and tympanic sinus canopy with intracranial invasion were treated by extended radical mastoidectomy; seven cases with lateral skull base bon…

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess, by patient survey and clinical examination, the results of correctional total middle ear reconstruction of problematic mastoid cavities following radical or modified radical mastoidectomy.
SETTING: This study was performed in an academic tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: The study consisted of a retrospective survey, using the modified hearing satisfaction scale, of 50 patients, who had undergone total middle ear reconstruction of their problematic mastoid cavities. The survey results were correlated with their postoperative clinical findings.

OBJECTIVE: To recount experience with cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea and temporal bone meningoencephalocele repair in a tertiary care hospital.
METHOD: A retrospective review was conducted of 16 cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea and meningoencephalic herniation patients managed surgically from 1991 to 2016.
RESULTS: Aetiology was: congenital (n = 3), post-traumatic (n = 2), spontaneous (n = 1) or post-mastoidectomy (n = 10). Surgical repair was undertaken by combined middle cranial fossa and transmastoid approach in 3 patients, transmastoid approach in 2, oval window plugging in 1, and subtotal p…

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media is a massive public health problem in numerous low- and middle-income countries. Unfortunately, few low- and middle-income countries can offer surgical therapy.
METHODS: A six-month long programme in Cambodia focused on training local surgeons in type I tympanoplasty was instigated. Qualitative educational and quantitative surgical outcomes were evaluated in the 12 months following programme completion. A four-month long training programme in mastoidectomy and homograft ossiculoplasty was subsequently implemented, and the preliminary surgical and e…

We report about a boy with the symptoms of Gradenigo's syndrome (abducens nerve palsy, acute otitis media, unilateral headache). The MR imaging showed a sinus vein thrombosis instead of the expected petroapicitis. After 2 weeks of conservative therapy with antibiotics and anticoagulation, without any clinical effort the boy underwent a mastoidectomy. Headache and otitis media recovered quickly but the diplopia still remained after 25 months.

Petrositis is still a very real complication of otitis media. The most striking diagnostic feature is facial and/or retrobulbar pain, and it is the most consistent symptom. External rectus paralysis was present in only one of the four cases presented in this series. Treatment is surgical. In order to spare the cochlea and give adequate exposure to the apical cells, the middle fossa approach to the petrous apex is presented, to be used alone or in conjunction with mastoidectomy.

Gradenigo syndrome consists of the association of otitis media, facial pain in regions innervated by the first and second division of trigeminal nerve and abducens nerve paralysis. It is caused by osteitis of the petrous apex (PA) and is a very rare complication of otitis media. Its treatment usually consists in mastoidectomy and antibiotics. We report a case of a 6-year-old child, which was managed medically with a positive outcome.

OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a preoperative radiologic scoring system for predicting posterior tympanotomy (PT) and mastoidectomy-associated difficulties during cochlear implantation (CI).
STUDY DESIGN: It was a prospective case-series study.
SETTINGS: The included CI surgeries were performed at tertiary referral institutions from October 2022 to April 2023.
SUBJECTS: We included 73 CI candidates performed via the PT approach.
INTERVENTION: The proposed radiologic score, composed of 13 items, was fulfilled and evaluated before each CI surgery.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: We correlated this s…

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the impact of external and middle ear findings in the incidence of facial canal dehiscence (FCD) during mastoidectomy for chronic otitis media.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined the operative details of 186 patients who underwent primary tympanomastoidectomy for chronic otitis media between January 2015 and January 2020 retrospectively. In this study we only evaluated the second portion of the facial nerve canal.
RESULTS: The global prevalence of FCD was 22.6% (42/186 patients) with a higher incidence, of 38.7% (36/93), in …

Surgery for cholesteatoma should be tailored to individual patients, considering demographic and disease factors, to obtain a dry, safe, and functional ear. The EAONO/JOS classification and staging system provide a valuable framework for data collection and outcome assessment. Canal wall-up and canal wall-down surgical approaches each have their advantages and disadvantages, though it is not definitive that one approach is clearly more advantageous than the other. Mastoid obliteration techniques show promise in reducing recidivistic disease rates but require further research and standardizatio

Reconstructive middle ear surgery was introduced in the early fifties. Kley was one of the first to investigate the applicability of grafts and the functional restoration of the middle ear transformer. He also practiced a combined approach with anterior tympanoplasty and posterior mastoidectomy. On the occasion of his 65th birthday it can be said that his achievements such as the use of fascia for tympanic membrane reconstruction, the systematic stapes elevation etc. have contributed to the success of tympanoplasty.

31 patients with carcinoma of the middle ear were observed over a period of 15 years. Polytomography was used to determine the local extent of the disease. Of 22 patients given radical therapy, 15 were treated by mastoidectomy followed by radiation therapy. The 5-year survival rate was 40%, which is in agreement with the findings of several other authors. Patients treated by irradiation alone had a poor survival rate.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficiency of additional intraoperative endoscopic inspection in reducing residual cholesteatoma in pediatric cholesteatoma involving the mastoid treated with classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 32 cases of pediatric cholesteatoma involving the mastoid were enrolled in this perspective study and treated with classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty. Transmastoid posterior tympanotomy, atticotomy and transecting tendon of tympani tensor were conducted to achieve adequate visualization of hidden spaces in the m…
