Population exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution in West Africa.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant associated with combustion emissions and adverse human health outcomes. In West Africa, however, limited ground-based monitoring has hindered regional assessment of population exposure to air pollution. This work leverages the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and gridded population density data to develop and evaluate the population exposure pattern to NO2 across West Africa. A population-weighted exposure (PWE) metric was developed to quantify exposure intensity in inhabited areas (≥50 people km-2). Spatial patterns of NO2 we…

MicroRNA172 regulates growth under low nitrogen conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana.

miR172 and its target genes TOE1 and TOE2 regulate low nitrogen (LN) dependent root elongation growth in Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of miR172 suppresses LN mediated PR elongation. Reduced responses of miR172 overexpression lines and toe1-2;toe2-1 mutants to LN are associated with impaired nitrate assimilation, suggesting a role of the miR172-TOE1/TOE2 module in regulating plant growth under LN conditions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding regulatory RNAs, play important roles in various aspects of plant growth and stress responses, including nutrient deficiency. The ava…

Monolayer and Bilayer Nitrogen-Doped Nanographenes Constructed by Cascade Cyclization.

Nitrogen-doped nanographenes (NGs) with precise structures are attractive because of their tunable electronic structures and supramolecular assembly behaviors. However, the synthesis of structurally diverse architectures, especially discrete bilayer systems, remains challenging. Herein, we report a cascade photo-induced radical cyclization (PIRC) strategy for the programmable synthesis of a series of peripheral nitrogen-doped NGs with tunable monolayer and bilayer architectures. Starting from nitrogen-doped nanographene 1 as a versatile structural platform, π-extension affords the larger monol…

Plasma Activate Nitrogen for Efficient Ammonia Synthesis: Plasma Ammonia Synthesis.

Synthetic ammonia is of great significance to the development of industry and agriculture. At present, its manufacturing production is still dominated by century-old Haber-Bosch process, involving in huge amounts of energy consumptions and carbon dioxide emissions. Hence, it is of great significance to develop green and sustainable alternative technologies, such as photo-, thermo-, and electro-catalytic syntheses of ammonia. Nevertheless, the intrinsic inertness of nitrogen results in low ammonia yield of above candidates, which still cannot meet commercialization expectations. Recent research…

Nanoplastic and nickel nanoparticles modulate soybean performance and nitrogen assimilation.

The increasing release of nanoplastics (NPx) and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) into terrestrial ecosystems poses emerging risks to soil biota and the food chain. The effects of NPx contamination on soybean growth and N2 fixation potential in the presence of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) remain poorly understood. This study investigated the accumulation and phytotoxicity of polystyrene nanoplastic (PS NPx) and NiO-NPs in soybean and their effects on nitrogen fixation potential. Single or co-application of NPx and NiO-NPs (100 mg kg-1) markedly reduced photosynthetic efficiency (8-48%), …

Microplastics and co-occurring nitrogen synergistically accelerate blue carbon loss.

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs)-including seagrass meadows, mangroves, and salt marshes-store vast amounts of organic carbon, yet their carbon sink function is increasingly threatened by hazardous microplastics and co-occurring nitrogen pollution. Here, we used a controlled microcosm experiment and multi-omics analysis (16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, and Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) to investigate how two common microplastics-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA)-interact with nitrogen …

Nitrogen-containing compounds from the fruits of Elaeagnus angustifolia L.

Previous studies have suggested that the main chemical constituents of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. are phenols and organic acids. In this study, using a combination of multiple chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, we focused for the first time on the less-investigated nitrogen-containing constituents of this plant. Sixteen nitrogen-containing compounds were isolated and identified from its fruits, including six new structures, designated as elangnitrogens A (1), B1 (2), B2 (3), C (4), D (5), and E (6), together with ten known analogues. All known compounds were reported from the Elaeagn…

A Co-Chaperone Mimetic Perturbs Cellular Nitrogen Metabolism in Mycobacteria.

Protein quality control in bacteria relies on dynamic chaperone networks that rapidly respond to environmental stresses. In mycobacteria, a … 1C-PAL bound GS and inhibited its enzymatic activity. Cellular studies validated that J1C perturbed nitrogen metabolism mediated by GS in mycobacteria. Together, these findings establish J1C-PAL as a cell-permeable chemoproteomic tool for mapping protein targets and uncover a surprising link between a co-chaperone mimetic and bacterial metabolism.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi- linked microbial processes in soil nitrogen cycling.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) create an extended plant-soil interface (referred to as mycorrhizal hyphosphere) where specific microbial interactions shape key steps of the nitrogen (N) cycle. Extraradical hyphae of the AMF host diverse microbes that help mineralize organic substrates, regulate ammonium and nitrate transformations, and enhance N retention. These processes allow plants to access both inorganic N and the N released from complex organic compounds. This review synthesizes current evidence for AMF-microbe interactions in relation to mineralization, nitrification, denitrificatio…

Organocatalytic enantioconvergent α-substitution of sulfonium salts by nitrogen nucleophiles.

Chiral α-amino carbonyl compounds are essential building blocks in the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals. Direct enantioconvergent nucleophilic substitution represents a powerful approach, but it has not been well established for the synthesis of α-amino ketones. Herein, we report a robust organocatalytic protocol with α-keto sulfonium salts. Utilizing a chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) in an aqueous/organic biphasic system, we achieved enantioconvergent substitution with free amines in high yields and excellent enantioselectivity. Mechanistic studies suggest that the CPA plays a d

Microbial superoxide production drives biogenic nitrogen dioxide formation in soils.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a critical atmospheric pollutant and ozone precursor, yet biogenic soil sources remain poorly constrained. Current models assume soil NO2 flux is exclusively depositional. Here we demonstrate that soils can produce NO2 through microbial superoxide (O2-) production. Using controlled factorial slurry experiments, native microbial communities produced approximately 10 times more NO2 than sterile controls following nitric oxide (NO) exposure. Stimulating superoxide production with NADH increased NO2 formation 15- to 26-fold, while inhibiting NADH oxidase reduced productio…

Fenofibrate microemulsion eyedrops for treating nitrogen mustard induced corneal injury.

Vesicants are highly toxic chemicals used as warfare agents, primarily absorbed through the skin, inhalation, or ocular surface. Nitrogen mustard (NM), a potent vesicant, often leads to blindness due to the inadequacies of existing therapies. This study explores the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) in NM-induced ocular injury and evaluates the efficacy of fenofibrate (Feno), a PPARα agonist, in preventing corneal injury progression. Feno, an FDA-approved oral medication used to treat dyslipidemia, has shown off-labelled potential in promoting corneal wound healing. …

Fluoride-Catalyzed Fluoroacetylation of Alcohols, Thioalcohols, and Nitrogen-Containing Compounds.

The strained C-N bond of fluoroacetamides was activated by fluoride to form acyl fluoride, thereby enabling mild O-, S-, N-fluoroacetylation. The reaction of alcohols, thioalcohols, and nitrogen-containing compounds with N-phenyl-N-tosylfluoroacetamides proceeded smoothly in the presence of a fluoride catalyst to provide α-fluorinated esters, thioesters, and amides in satisfactory to excellent yields at ambient temperature. The potential of this mild fluoroacetylation is highlighted by large-scale synthesis and late-stage diversification of chiral and medicinally relevant molecules.

Candida spp. suppress neutrophil reactive nitrogen species to evade killing.

Candida albicans is a human commensal that can cause life-threatening invasive infection in immunocompromised individuals. Human immunity to C. albicans infection is thought to be largely dependent on neutrophil reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) generation by neutrophils. Despite this, our understanding of innate immune killing and escape by C. albicans is primarily studied in macrophages, and the precise mechanisms of evasion are unclear in neutrophils. Here, we sought to determine the importance of neutrophil reactive nitrogen species (RNS) production during C. albicans infectio…

Engineering Nitrogen-Coordinated Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient CO2 Cycloaddition.

Developing highly efficient nonprecious heterogeneous catalysts for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to cyclic carbonates is crucial but challenging in the modern chemical industry. Here, a facile and scalable molecules-confined pyrolysis approach is demonstrated for the synthesis of nitrogen-coordinated transition-metal (TM) single-atom catalysts (SACs). Moreover, the various coordination structures of metal centers and the forms of nitrogen species are successfully revealed. The designed TM SACs show excellent catalytic performance for the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides to cycli…

sp2/sp3-Hybridized nitrogen-mediated electrochemical CO2 capture and utilization.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization, powered by renewable energy, are essential to achieving net-zero emissions and CO2 valorization. While remarkable progress has been made in catalysts, solution design, and system engineering, recent breakthroughs reveal that nitrogen-containing molecules-specifically sp2-hybridized structures (e.g., pyridine) and sp3-hybridized moieties (e.g., ethanolamine) -hold untapped potential to revolutionize both CO2 capture and conversion. These structures have been demonstrated as the Holy Grail in facilitating CO2 activation, stabilizing k…

Nitrogen Redox Controls on Greenhouse Gas Production in Yedoma Taliks.

Large carbon and nitrogen pools are disproportionately concentrated in the icy, Pleistocene-aged silt deposits of Arctic Yedoma permafrost. Upon thaw, these undergo microbial mineralization, releasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Here, we present combined geochemical data with microbial function and community dynamics from deep (7-m) talik soil boreholes in water-unsaturated yedoma upland in interior Alaska. Our results reveal significant in situ seasonal shifts in microbial function, community composition, and diversity throug…

Nitrogen fixation using metallic lithium nanoparticles formed by electrospray deposition.

Multiphase reduction of ambient dinitrogen (N2) was observed during the deposition of charged or uncharged aqueous microdroplets containing a lithium salt pre-catalyst onto conducting or inert surfaces to yield mixed lithium nanoparticles. We propose that this method leverages the high electric fields and partial solvation of ions at the gas-water-solid interface to enhance reaction rates and perform normally moisture-sensitive chemistry in aqueous droplets. Ammonia (NH3) is formed and Li+ is regenerated from the hydrolysis of transient lithium nitride Li3N, constituting a complete catalytic c…

Do cyanogenic glucosides help sorghum manage a fluctuating nitrogen supply?

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) is an important forage crop that contains the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin that releases hydrogen cyanide when tissue is damaged. The acyanogenic (dhurrin-free) sorghum line tcd1 was developed to eliminate the risk of cyanide poisoning from sorghum forage. However, dhurrin may also play a role in nitrogen accumulation and storage. We tested whether dhurrin offers the cyanogenic sorghum line BTx623 a growth advantage relative to tcd1 , when nitrogen is limiting and variable. BTx623 and tcd1 were grown under two 42-day nitrogen treatments: high dose, low fre…
