[Doppler ultrasonography of orbital vessels in circulatory disorders of the eye].

During the past 5 years 412 patients (189 male, 223 female) presenting with vascular disorders were examined with Doppler ultrasonography (DUSG) of the orbital vessels. DUSG was used as a screening method for detecting additional lesions of the carotid system. The 412 patients were divided into 5 groups according to their clinical symptoms: Group I: amaurosis fugax; group II: occlusions of the central retinal artery; group III: venous circulatory disorders of the retina; group IV: AION and optic disk vasculitis; group V: symptoms of chronic ocular ischemia. DUSG disclosed a high percentage of …

Bridging the Camera Domain Gap With Image-to-Image Translation Improves Glaucoma Diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to improve the automated diagnosis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON), we propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) model that translates Optain images to Topcon images. METHODS: We trained the GAN model on 725 paired images from Topcon and Optain cameras and externally validated it using an additional 843 paired images collected from the Aravind Eye Hospital in India. An optic disc segmentation model was used to assess the disparities in disc parameters across cameras. The performance of the translated images was evaluated using root mean squar

Anatomy and evaluation of the optic nerve head.

Evaluation of the optic disc is important for the correct diagnosis and follow-up of optic neuropathies, especially glaucoma. The characteristics of the optic disc depend on various factors, including demographic and population aspects, and analysis of these characteristics may vary according to the methods used. The size and format of the neural rim along with the nerve fiber layer are important to the clinician's judgment regarding the susceptibility of the subject to develop glaucoma. In this study, we reviewed the literature to summarize the main methods and its characteristics in the eval

Bilateral optic nerve drusen and gliomas in Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) consists of a vascular nevus involving an extremity, varicosities of that extremity, and hypertrophy of bone and soft tissue. When arteriovenous malformation is also present, it is called Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS). Ophthalmic features of these syndromes include vascular anomalies of the orbit, iris, retina, choroid, and optic nerve. We report a case of a 16-year-old girl with KTS who was found to have bilateral optic nerve and chiasmal gliomas, optic disk drusen, and acquired myelination of the retinal nerve fiber layer. These findings have not be…

[Neuro-ophthalmological and radiological signs of Aicardi syndrome].

Described in the paper are the results of ophthalmologic, ultrasound and radiological examinations of 3 girls with the Aicardi syndrome. It was for the first time, that an expansion of the optic-nerve disk excavation was described in patients with the above syndrome; such expansion was conditioned by trans-synaptic neuron degeneration induced by lesions to optic radiation in view of prenatal of encephaloplastic processes. The changing brain white substance as projected by optic radiation was detected in all children by computer and magnetic resonance tomography. Besides, other anomalies of the

Pseudopapilledema in neurofibromatosis type 2.

PURPOSE: To report a case of neurofibromatosis type 2 with pseudopapilledema secondary to a prepapillary gliotic membrane. METHOD: Case rep … e. CONCLUSION: The patient has pseudopapilledema secondary to an epiretinal membrane overlying the optic disk of the right eye. The possibility of pseudopapilledema should be considered when evaluating patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 and abnormal optic nerves.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerve in optic neuritis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the optic nerves using the STIR (short inversion time inversion recovery) sequence was performed in 37 adult patients with a recent or past attack of optic neuritis. MRI revealed high-signal regions in 84% of symptomatic and 20% of asymptomatic nerves. The mean longitudinal extent of lesions was 1 cm. Slow or poor visual recovery was associated with more extensive lesions, or lesions within the optic canal. Disk swelling was usually associated with anterior lesions but also occurred with lesions in the canal. Visual evoked potentials were even more sensitive

Clinical and computed tomographic findings in the Foster Kennedy syndrome.

A 52-year-old man had progressive loss of visual acuity in his left eye associated with anosmia of five years duration. Clinical findings included papilledema in the right eye and optic atrophy in the left eye. A diagnosis of Foster Kennedy syndrome was made. Careful attention to the ophthalmoscopic appearance of the left eye disclosed optic disk swelling in regions without significant atrophy as well as dilated retinal veins. Both of these signs suggested increased intracranial pressure, rather than a primary anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. High resolution computed tomographic scanning co…

Neuroretinitis associated with herpes simplex encephalitis in an adult.

A 48-year-old man who died of herpes simplex encephalitis had a bilateral papillitis at autopsy. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were especially numerous within the ganglion cells and inner nuclear layer of the macula and consisted of typical virions by electron microscopy. Contiguous spread from the brain to the eyes may have occurred via the optic nerves. Clinically, the disk and retinal changes were misinterpreted as being caused by papilledema. Papillitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of disk swelling in adults with suspected Herpesvirus hominis infection of the central ne

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the superficial and deep blood supply of the optic nerve using a new method, confocal tomographic angiography, which … ESULTS: In 22 of 25 eyes with a normal visual field, a diffuse microvascular filling pattern of the optic disk area was apparent with no filling defects. The confocal tomographic angiography of 49 of 65 glaucomatous eyes had good correlation with their visual field defect location. In 20 of 27 eyes with superior visual field loss, an inferior vascular fillin …
