Complications associated with volar locking plate fixation for distal radius fractures in 1955 cases: A multicentre retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Since volar locking plates (VLPs) have the benefits of more stable fixation and fewer complications, VLP osteosynthesis is now the preferred osteosynthesis method in the operative management of distal radius fractures (DRF). Along with the increases in operative management of VLP, the character and frequency of complications have changed. Thus, this multicentre study aimed to identify the characteristics of patients with DRFs who were treated with VLP fixation, describe the complication types and rates related to the procedure, and compare the results with those found in the literatur

Computer-Assisted Three-Dimensional Corrective Osteotomy for Malunited Fractures of the Distal Radius Using Prefabricated Bone Graft Substitute.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) imaging has enabled more accurate preoperative planning. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of a novel, computer-assisted, 3D corrective osteotomy using prefabricated bone graft substitute to treat malunited fractures of the distal radius. METHODS: We investigated 19 patients who underwent the computer-assisted 3D corrective osteotomy for a malunited fracture of the distal radius after the operation was stimulated with CT data. A prefabricated bone graft substitute corresponding to the patient's bone defect was im

Sonographic evaluation of effects of the volar plate on trigger finger.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated trigger fingers ultrasonographically and clarified differences between fingers with and without continuous locking or snapping symptoms according to the thicknesses of the A1 pulley, flexor tendon and volar plate. METHODS: We evaluated 26 trigger fingers, divided into two groups: Group 1, 14 fingers with locking or snapping; and Group 2, 12 fingers without such symptoms. We also evaluated 26 contralateral fingers as controls (Control 1 and 2 groups). We compared each group to the respective control group according to thickness of the A1 pulley and volar plate, and cro

Correction of nascent malunion of distal radius fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Early correction of malunion of distal radius fractures may be necessary in young, active patients. The aim of this study was to report the advantages and disadvantages of early correction of distal radius malunion. METHODS: Eleven patients (10 male, 1 female; average age 36 years, range: 20 to 54 years) with nascent malunion of distal radius fractures were included in this study. The malunions occurred after initial conservative treatment of unstable distal radius fractures. Mean interval between injury and corrective surgery was 12 (range: 8 to 15) weeks. Two patients had intra-

Distal radius fracture arthroscopic intraarticular displacement measurement after open reduction and internal fixation from a volar approach.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess articular surface reduction arthroscopically after volar locked-plate fixation of distal radius fractures (DRFs) via fluoroscopyguided open reduction/internal fixation. We also aimed to develop preoperative radiographic criteria to help assist in determining which DRFs may need arthroscopic evaluation. METHODS: A total of 31 consecutive patients with DRF were prospectively enrolled. Posteroanterior (PA) and lateral radiographs as well as axial, coronal, and sagittal CT scans were obtained just after attempted reduction of the DRF. The widest

High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Neurography at 7T: A Pilot Study of Hand Innervation.

The emergence of 7T clinical MRI technology has sparked our interest in its ability to discern the complex structures of the hand. Our primary objective was to assess the sensory and motor nerve structures of the hand, specifically nerves and Pacinian corpuscles, with the dual purpose of aiding diagnostic endeavors and supporting reconstructive surgical procedures. Ethical approval was obtained to carry out 7T MRI scans on a cohort of volunteers. Four volunteers assumed a prone position, with their hands (N = 8) positioned in a "superman" posture. To immobilize and maintain the hand in a stric

Resolved Chronic Non-Healing Ulcer After Distal Radius Giant Cell Tumor Resection: Nursing Experience and Wound Care.

BACKGROUND Giant cell tumors of bone typically occur in early adulthood, when the growth plate has closed. The distal radius is the second most common location affected, accounting for 10% to 12% of cases. Complications of poor soft tissue healing are rare in the distal radius, owing to its rich blood supply. However, the curettage procedure and use of bone cement and external fixation can affect the local blood supply. CASE REPORT We present a rare case of a 24-year-old woman with no significant medical history who underwent surgery at a local hospital to treat a giant cell tumor of the radiu

Centralization of ulna with wrist fusion for failure of reconstructed distal radius by allograft bone or prosthesis: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Centralization of the ulna is commonly used in the treatment of radius developmental deformity in children. The secondary distal radius deficiency in adults is different from the developmental deformity of the radius in children. There is no report on the ulna centralization with wrist fusion for the failure of the reconstructed distal radius by allograft bone or prosthesis for osteosarcoma in adults. PATIENT CONCERNS: 2 patients with a bone tumor on the distal radius underwent tumor resection and distal radius reconstruction by allograft bone or prosthesis and suffered distal radi

The balanced finger: biomechanics of intrinsic and extrinsic systems and principles of reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The balance of the finger is maintained through a complex interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms that coordinate motion, stability and force transmission across the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. Although flexor muscle mass exceeds that of the extensors, equilibrium is achieved through precisely calibrated tendon positioning, lever arms and passive restraints. This balance permits efficient motion with minimal energy expenditure and allows rapid transition between power and precision function.Physiological balance:Active balance is generated by coordinat

Intraoperative computed tomography with an integrated navigation system versus freehand technique under fluoroscopy in the treatment of intra-articular distal radius fractures.

Volar locking plate (VLP) fixation for distal radius fractures (DRF) is a technically demanding procedure, where accurate placement of the distal screws for subchondral articular support is essential. The purpose of this retrospective, case-control study was to compare a computed tomography (CT) navigation system for VLP fixation of intra-articular DRF with conventional freehand fluoroscopy guided surgery. Twelve consecutive patients with DRF, AO type C3.1, underwent VLP fixation using intraoperative CT navigation (navigated group) and 16 consecutive patients had conventional freehand fluorosc

Are Radiographic Characteristics Associated With Outcome in Surgically Treated Distal Radius Fractures?

PURPOSE: Evidence to date shows that distal radius fracture displacement measured on radiographs does not correlate with patient-reported outcomes. Quantitative 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) (Q3DCT) potentially captures fracture displacement more accurately. We aimed to assess the independent association between radiographic, CT, and Q3DCT measures of residual displacement and change in disability, quality of life, range of motion (ROM), and grip strength 12 weeks and 1 year after volar plating of intra-articular distal radius fractures. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of

[Etiopathogenesis, clinical picture and diagnosis of onychomycoses].

ETIOLOGY OF ONYCHOMYCOSES: Onychomycoses can be caused by dermatophytes, molds and yeasts. However, dermatophytes appear to be the chief organisms capable of a primary attack on the nail. By far the most frequent dermatophytes isolated from nails are Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and Epidermophyton floccosum. Molds virtually only invade toenails, but their role as a primary pathogen is still debated. Yeasts have been isolated from diseased nails at highly different rates. Nails may be infected by two different dermatophytes, two dermatophytes and a yeast, a dermatop

The Resilience of Caregivers and Children in the Context of COVID-19: A Systematic Review.

Disorders of cornification are a group of diseases that share abnormalities in the manufacture or desquamation of corneocytes. This paper reviews the major and a few of the rarer ones with a concentration on their therapy. Ichthyosis vulgaris is probably a post-translational defect in pro-filaggrin expression. It shows fine white flaky scales of the extensor surfaces, trunk, flank, lower legs but spares the folds and wet areas. Treatment is with aggressive moisturization. Hydrocortisone creams may be needed to control itch. Recessive X-linked ichthyosis is due to a deficiency of cholesterol su

Comparison of surgical and conservative therapy in older patients with distal radius fracture: a prospective randomized clinic al trial.

INTRODUCTION: The distal radius fracture is considered the most common fracture in humans. For fractures classified as Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthese (AO) 23-C1 + C2, there is no consensus on treatment in older patients due to inconsistent study results. The aim of this study was to compare conservative and surgical treatment in relation to wrist function and satisfaction in patients older than 65 years. METHODS: In this prospective randomized clinical trial, patients aged older than 65 years who suffered an isolated AO-classified C1 or C2 distal radius fracture were randomized to surg

Intramedullary Nail Fixation for Displaced and Unstable Distal Radial Fractures in Patients Aged 65 Years or Older.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures in elderly patients are now commonly treated with a volar locking plate, but flexor pollicis longus dysfunction caused by stripping of the muscle and tendon irritation and rupture caused by prominence of the implant have been reported. Intramedullary implants can stabilize distal radius fractures while minimally affecting the flexor and extensor tendons and muscles around the site, but osteoporosis in elderly patients might affect the radiographic and functional results of distal radius fractures treated by intramedullary implants. We investigated the radiog
