OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the use of MR imaging in the evaluation of the positions of the popliteal artery and peroneal nerve in children with popliteal pterygium syndrome for preoperative planning and to describe the typical appearance of popliteal pterygium on MR imaging.
CONCLUSION: By depicting the popliteal artery and peroneal nerve either in normal positions or abnormally located immediately adjacent to the pterygium, MR imaging provides useful information for preoperative planning in children with popliteal pterygium syndrome. The MR appearance of a popliteal pterygium is

We prospectively studied 40 hospitalized patients who had well-established diagnoses of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Patients with confounding risk factors for neuropathy were excluded; none of the study patients had known vitamin deficiency, alcoholism, or any metabolic, drug, or toxic factor. Clinical and electrophysiologic evidence of a distal symmetric polyneuropathy was found in 35% (13/37) of the patients. Symptoms and signs of neuropathy were usually mild, and painful dysesthesias were uncommon. Amplitude reduction of sural nerve action potentials distinguished all patients with

Considering the importance of managing patients with β-thalassemia and the importance of early detection of disease complications, we examined the rate of sensorimotor neuropathy in patients with β-thalassemia and the risk factors related to it. This cross-sectional study included 44 blood transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia patients aged 5 years and older. Nerve conduction studies (NCSs) were performed via standard procedures for both motor and sensory nerves. Neuropathy was observed in 14 patients (31.8%). NCS results for sensorimotor nerves in patients were within normal range. In motor NCS

Neurological syndromes associated with lymphomas are uncommon. These syndromes occur mainly in Hodgkin lymphoma and primarily involve the central nervous system. Neurological manifestations in the peripheral nervous system and motor neuropathies are rare and add an extra layer of diagnostic confusion. We describe the case of a 70-year-old man with a history of right foot drop, who arrived at the emergency department after sustaining polytrauma. During initial evaluation, imaging studies incidentally revealed a retroperitoneal mass, which further studies diagnosed as an aggressive B-cell lympho

This is a case report of a boy who presented with unilateral foot drop approximately 1 year after traumatic injury from skateboarding. Exploratory surgical operation was eventually performed, and histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed leprous peripheral neuropathy of the peroneal nerve. The patient had immigrated from Vietnam to the United States 3 years previously. The occurrence, albeit rare, of this entity in the immigrants from endemic leprosy regions is discussed.

A 43-year-old patient with familial Leber's optic atrophy suffered from spastic paraplegia. Physical examination disclosed cerebellar and pyramidal signs and signs of peripheral neuropathy. On sural nerve biopsy, there were few large myelinated fibers, signs of axonal degeneration and thin myelin sheets. This case suggests an overlap syndrome with central and peripheral nervous system features of Leber's disease, spinocerebellar degeneration and peroneal muscular atrophy.

We present a case of a 60-year-old man with mild type 2 diabetes mellitus and step-wise progression of bilateral lower limb weakness, numbness, and pain over a 1-year period. At the time of evaluation, he used a walker. He had elevated cerebrospinal fluid protein, abnormal cooling and heat-pain thresholds on quantitative sensory testing, and nerve conduction studies/electromyography consistent with bilateral lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathies. Because it was not clear whether the disease was still active, a right superficial peroneal nerve biopsy was performed and showed evidence of activ

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) is characterized by acute, painless and recurrent mononeuropathies. Genetic testing shows PMP22 gene deletion of chromosome 17p11.2 can provide evidence for the diagnosis of HNPP. Reports on tibial neuropathy as the main manifestation of HNPP are very rare. We report a 14-year-old girl who was admitted to our hospital due to plantar foot numbness and plantar flexion weakness of her left foot. The patient had a history of lateral dorsal numbness and right foot drop when she was 3 years old. Clinical symptoms, and neurological examina

A 38-year-old woman underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection for invasive ductal carcinoma with multiple lymph node involvement. The patient received adriamycin 60 mg/m(2) and cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m(2) followed by weekly paclitaxel 80 mg/m(2) (without interruption) as adjuvant treatment. After receiving ten courses of paclitaxel, the patient developed motor neuropathy, with difficulty in ascending stairs and rising from a chair. A nerve conduction study demonstrated impairment of bilateral peroneal nerve function, although the sural sensory nerves were intact. After 2 weeks o

AIM: Cardiovascular autonomic and peripheral sensory neuropathy is a known complication of chronic alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver diseases. We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for peripheral sensory nerve and autonomic dysfunction using sensitive methods in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
METHODS: Twenty-four AMA M2 positive female patients with clinical, biochemical and histological evidence of PBC and 20 age matched healthy female subjects were studied. Five standard cardiovascular reflex tests and 24-h heart rate variability (HRV) analysis were performed to

OBJECTIVE: Peroneal nerve (PN) injury is a common neuropathy that affects the lower extremities. It results in loss of dorsiflexion at the tibiotalar joint and eversion at the subtalar joint, ultimately leading to foot drop. Various etiological factors contribute to this pathology. Treatment options include conservative management, steroid therapy, nerve decompression, repair, and reconstruction. However, due to the uncertain outcomes of primary nerve procedures, secondary interventions such as tendon transfers (TTs) generally provide more satisfactory results. This is particularly effective i

Ganglion cysts are relatively common, but intraneural ganglion cysts (INGCs) within peripheral nerves are rare and poorly understood. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with acute right-foot drop. She experienced acute knee pain radiating from the lateral leg to the dorsal foot two days after the first coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccination (BNT162b2, Pfizer-BioNTech). She had no history of trauma or medication use. Two weeks after the onset of symptoms, she developed a dorsiflexor weakness of the right foot (Medical Research Council grade, poor). The weakness wors

Intraneural haemangiomas are rare tumours that can affect peripheral nerves. We describe a case of a 10-year-old female with an incidental finding of a common peroneal nerve lesion following knee injury. MRI demonstrated avid heterogeneous enhancement and peri-lesional oedema, and an open biopsy was performed revealing haemangioma on histopathological analysis. The patient was managed with observation and remains intact at 24-month follow-up.

This article presents 2 cases of foot drop after joint replacement surgery that presented after sequential compression device application. In both cases, intact peroneal nerve function was documented by the surgeon in the recovery room prior to sequential compression device application. We believe that excessive pressure over the superficial aspect of the peroneal nerve in conjunction with decreased pain stimulus from analgesia may have contributed to these complications. We maintain sequential compression devices are the current mechanical thromboprophylaxis of choice; however, 4 recommendati

INTRODUCTION: Entrapment neuropathies of the lower extremity are uncommon, frequently misdiagnosed or diagnosed late, and have no well-established diagnostic protocol. The scratch collapse test (SCT) has been described for carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome and, in the lower extremity, has been evaluated only for common peroneal nerve compression; whether it can localize uncommon or multiple sites of lower extremity nerve compression, and how it compares with Tinel's sign at those sites, is unknown. This study evaluates the feasibility of the SCT for localizing the site of nerve compression an

We have examined the variability in function measurements of three sensory foot nerves in neuropathic diabetic patients and have compared them to measurements from healthy non-diabetic subjects. Sixty-six healthy, non-diabetic subjects (30 (45%) males, mean age 56 years (range, 21-84 years)) and 61 age and sex matched diabetic patients (33 (54%) males, mean age 55 years (range, 34-78 years) Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), mean duration of DM 24 years (range, 2-48 years)) were tested. Current perception threshold (CPT) at 250 Hz was employed to test the sensory function of three nerves: superfic

The lumbosacral spinal cord, lumbar roots, L5 spinal ganglion, L5 segmental nerve and entire lengths of the sciatic, tibial, peroneal and sural nerves were taken at postmortem examination from 2 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and a predominantly sensory symmetric distal polyneuropathy and compared with 2 non-diabetic control patients. Sections from proximal to middle levels of sciatic nerves of these patients showed a remarkable variability in myelinated fiber (MF) density within and between fascicles. Roots and segmental nerves appeared to be unaffected. Sections of

Nerve compression syndromes of the lower extremity present a challenge in differential diagnosis. Compression of the common peroneal nerve occurs relatively frequently; compression of the sciatic nerve occurs infrequently. The pattern of weakness helps distinguish lumbar root entrapment from peripheral compression syndromes. Compression syndromes must also be differentiated from diabetic, alcoholic or vasculitic neuropathy. Recovery correlates with the degree and duration of nerve injury. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Showing the clinical, genetic and electrophysiological features, the diagnosis of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II (HMSN) in a german kinship was questioned by unusual findings in 3 members of the family: they presented signs suggestive of cardiomyopathy and the sural nerve biopsy showed occasional giant axons with neurofilament accumulation. These findings may mean either a new type within the heterogeneous group of peroneal muscular atrophies or that these features have not been realized in HMSN II as yet.

BACKGROUND: The variable clinical features of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN I) suggest heterogeneity. Some cases of idiopathic sensory neuropathy could be caused by missense mutations of SPTLC1 and RAB7 and not be recognised as familial.
OBJECTIVE: To screen persons with dominantly inherited HSAN I and others with idiopathic sensory neuropathies for known mutations of SPTLC1 and RAB7.
PATIENTS: DNA was examined from well characterised individuals of 25 kindreds with adult onset HSAN I for mutations of SPTLC1 and RAB7; 92 patients with idiopathic sensory neuropathy were al
